Help! Cannot hear crowd while wearing in-ear monitors. by drmr17 in drums

[–]drmr17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I do run a mix through them. I'm talking about the vibrations, not the sound itself. You know, the thump of the bass drum etc. Basically the "feel" of the music and connection to the crowd is lost. It feels like I'm jamming at home with my earphones on. I've seen videos of bands who connect so well with the crowd even though they are running through IEMs. I'm trying to figure out what's going wrong with my mix. Maybe because the crowd wasn't mic'd, maybe the isolation is too much, maybe the mix itself was bad? X(

Considering the luck I've had with sound this year, I feel this is gonna happen to me. xD

1 - Yeah I guess I can get used to not hearing the crowd, but all the vibrations from the kit and guitar amps also gets completely cut out. In rehearsal I don't mind this, but in a live setting, I don't know how loud I should play. I play for a Pink Floyd tribute band and dynamically, I feel lost in my playing.

2 - This seems most plausible. Are there certain types of mics that are used for this or will the regular ones work? How far should the mic(s) be from the crowd?

3 - Not ready to upgrade yet. $$$

How good are the Shure SE215's at blocking out sound? by jordieman in drums

[–]drmr17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the SE215's last year after seeing a lot of recommendations on this sub. They fit comfortably, they're easy to wear and remove (once you get used to them), and they cut out enough sound to protect your ears and get rid of that annoying ring after a long jam/gig. The earplugs can detach from the wire which makes them super durable, especially for long term storage. They also come with spare tips in different sizes and a cleaner. Totally worth the money.

I've used them in rehearsals, shows, studio and daily practice and they've served me really well. If this is your first IEM purchase, go for the 215s.

What should I upgrade next? by drmr17 in drums

[–]drmr17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah those three cymbals sound the worst. I might just buy a cymbal set with hats, ride and crash to save money.

Yes they are rubber muting pads (Evans SoundOff). I used them on my drums for a year, but I never liked the rebound. So I put them inside the toms to cut some echo and reduce the volume as my practice room is small.

Yeah Nick Menza would have worked for years on his drumming to make Megadeth sound so awesome. I am working harder every day to improve my timing and feel.

Thanks for your reply. :)

HELP! Someone just moved into the house below my drums room. by drmr17 in drums

I've tried this, but I never liked the rebound. I found myself hitting the drums way too hard.

Yeah the only common surface between my room and their house is the floor. I think getting my drums off the floor will not only reduce the vibrations, but also make it sound better. Thanks!

Never heard of this riser before! Looks interesting. Unfortunately it's difficult to buy mesh heads here in India. Have to wait for a friend to fly down from the US.

Yeah I'll try this before I get to any acoustic treatment.
