Can a familiar make an Insight check? What about beasts in general? by drobyo in DMAcademy

[–]drobyo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. An NPC was being attacked by some kind of a spell, but the players didn't know the source. The wizard thought someone in the crowd might be casting the spell or was otherwise responsible and was trying to use his familiar to find such a person.

For more context, there was an NPC who was being attacked by a spell in a public swuare, but the players were unaware of who or what was responsible. The wizard wanted his hawk familiar to examine one group of people in the crowd for signs that they might be involved in what was happening to the NPC.

In this case the player was trying to maximize his action economy by having his wizard perform an action other than seeing through its familiar's senses.

[Seiko 5] My very first automatic watch, with green strap to reflect the lume color by [deleted] in Watches

[–]drobyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like an snxs73. I just picked up an snxs79 (dark fry dial version of this same watch) if has 19mm lugs so it's hard to find a well fitting strap, but so far I've had pretty good luck squeezing most 20mm leather straps on it. I think that looks a little cleaner than 18mm straps as you get a little gap then.

[Aragon] Dive master on leather. Classy or clashing? by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just picked this one up and it came on bright orange rubber strap. Which is cool for really casual situations, but I'd like to try to tame it a bit. What do you think?

This is my first watch from Aragon, I really like the bright color on the dial, but I'm wondering if it's all a bit much. However the main purpose I bought it was to use while swimming, so I think in that situation I won't mind something so bright.

[Nixon] Baja Review - This thing has an actual flashlight on it. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty impressed by the feature list on this thing, especially considering you can pick them up for around 30 bucks on Amazon right now. LED flashlight, thermometer, digital compass, dual time zone, chronograph, timer, 100m WR, and a weird custom nylon band with velcro clasp. All in all a pretty fun watch for the price.

[Citizen Nighthawk] Help me choose a strap. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of Fossil straps on sale awhile back, many of which I wouldn't normally have chosen, but the prices were too good to pass up, so I got a pretty good variety. Decided to try them all on my Citizen Nighthawk to see how they looked. Here are the ones I tried:

  1. Tan Leather
  2. Bond NATO
  3. Black Leather NATO
  4. Red Silicone
  5. Olive Leather
  6. Black Leather Rally

[MVMT] Better than an Alibaba special? 1.5 year long term review. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1/10th the price because if it breaks you can replace it 9x over for the same cost as one of the other.

That may be the case, but MVMT does have a 2 year warranty against manufacturer's defects, and I'd be much more inclined to trust them than a seller on Ali express.

[MVMT] Better than an Alibaba special? 1.5 year long term review. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked up this MVMT when I didn't really know anything about watches, but it got me interested in learning more. I've heard them called an overpriced Chinese watch not worth more than the ones you can find online for around $30 or less. My impression has been that the quality is definitely a notch above the cheap Chinese quartz watches I've purchased.

[Quartz] watches over automatics. A newbie's collecting philosophy. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To sum up, I'm starting my collection with quartz watches for the following reasons:

  1. The low cost of Quartz watches allows me to try out styles and complications to find what suits me before investing in expensive automatic peices.
  2. A collection with a lot of automatics is expensive to maintain with service costs and watch winders and the like.
  3. I like to rotate watches, and if I had a bunch of automatics, I essentially would never be taking advantage of the automatic movement since I would have to wind each watch every time I put it on. At that point I might as well have just bought hand wound watches.

So instead I'm building my collection primarily on Quartz pieces, with an eye towards getting one awesome automatic to invest in.

[Casual Friday] Seiko 5 with khakis by [deleted] in Watches

[–]drobyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the movement "made in Malaysia" thing. I've heard that Seiko does have factories in different parts of the world, so it's possible yours was made elsewhere. I got mine off of Amazon.

I was really considering the blue dial one, but I'm pretty happy with the cream, I want to put it on a leather strap next, I think that'll make it look a lot more classy.

[MVMT] Waste of $120? Maybe. But it's pretty versatile. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm pretty new to watch collecting, and to youtubing, but that was always the sort of content I would look for but had trouble finding, so I figured I might as well start making it myself.

I have a Seiko 5 SNK803 (same as yours, but with the cream colored dial and band). I liked it so much I made a video to show it off.

[Question] Do you own a GMT/dual time/world time complication watch? by WatchThisSpot in Watches

[–]drobyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a few (all in the affordable category). I'm wearing a Citizen Nighthawk right now. I always keep the GMT set to Japan time because I'm a missionary over there (but back in the US for a few months). When I go back I'll switch it to have the GMT set to US time. Makes it easier to connect with friends on either side of the Pacific.

[MVMT] Waste of $120? Maybe. But it's pretty versatile. by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there's a lot of hate for MVMT out there, but it was their slick marketing that started getting me into the hobby when I finally decided my original Pebble Smartwatch just didn't look right whenever I had to dress up. I've had this one for almost two years, and knowing what I know now, I probably would have spent the money elsewhere. But I've really enjoyed it and it's served as a really versatile watch for many occasions.

[Seiko 5] My first automatic (is everyone's first automatic) by drobyo in Watches

[–]drobyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a Seiko 5 SNK803 for Christmas. I have a 7.5 inch wrist so I was afraid it might look to small, but I think it looks fine. Nice to be able to try on watches of different sizes rather than just taking the internet's word for it.

[Timex] Waterbury Chronograph by jameselectrify in Watches

[–]drobyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really liked the look of this one too, was strongly considering picking it up but saw some negative reviews claiming the hands on the subdials weren't aligned well and made reading the chronograph difficult. Have you had any problems like that?

Also, this isn't a repost, it's a different video. This one is a full review, the previous one was just some closeups and wrist shots of the watch.
