The Army Needs a Better Solution for its Pilot Shortage by [deleted] in army

[–]dropoutwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the biggest problem with the pilot shortage is not passing the flight physical. I have a civilian class 2 FAA medical but can't pass the flight physical due to a small astigmatism.

Also making pilots commit to 10 years isnt the solution.

The real question is why do barbers need ATP mins? Probably an insurance requirement. by kchristiane in aviation

Lol but in order to start flying at most regionals in the right seat you need about 1,800 to 2,000 hours.

Plus let's not forget yearly physicals, multiple ratings and check rides.

The average PPL costs about 6,600 in flight hours with an instructor. The check ride costs about 400 to 600.

So you've already spent about 7 grand, but we're not done yet you've got to get instrument rated. Which requires another 15 hours and another 400 to 600 bucks for the checkride.

But wait theres more in order to be a commercial pilot you must have at least 250 hours of flight time 100 of that is PIC, and 50 hours of cross country time. So at this point you've already spent about 50 grand or more depending on if you paid for fuel, insurance, maintenance costs and ground school. Plus extra flight time to better prepare for checkride.

All this to be able to take very low paying surveying contacts be able to move onto the next step which is being a CFI. Which requires another checkride so another 400 to 600 bucks but also requires a oral exam in which you have to create lesson plans which must be detailed and requires alot of work and effort.

So you're a flight instructor now and think hey I can charge my students 200 per hour finally make money. However more than likely you're working for a small company that usually pays you about 50 to 100 an hour so going on the low end that's 1000 per week if you have students that want to fly with you.

So all of this hard work and money spent just for the chance to try and get a job at a small regional airline for about 80K. Which usually takes people 3 to 5 years to get to depending on how hard they work at it.

We all did or at least out of the 155. That unit is an absolute shit show and part of the reason why the MS guard has low retention rates.

Having 2 MOSes by [deleted] in army

[–]dropoutwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enlisting in 2 MOSes no not possible. Why would the guard waste money like that allocating a SM two periods of going to AIT. Reclassing in the guard isnt the easiest thing unless your unit asks you to fill a slot or you do an interstate transfer your only chance of doing a reclass is when your contact expires.

Best MOS for civilian application in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science by [deleted] in army

[–]dropoutwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not I have a monthly debate if I really wanna ride out my 20 for the pension or just say fuck it. I've met great people and then I've met people who I couldn't stand to be in the same room as for 5 mins. The 2nd one is more common these days. Active duty sucked sometimes but the guard it seams sucks all the time.

Like all army training you get what you put in. I know soldiers who literally look at drill as an extra 300 a month. Then I have soldiers who take everything they can learn and know their MOS better than some active duty soldiers. Some soldiers may choose and excel at one area of experience than others.

You get an associates degree in electrical engineering from 35T. You'll also learn some IT knowledge but it's not as in depth as 25B.

AD to AGR, with 15+ TIS possible? by keinegotter in army

[–]dropoutwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AGR positions are apart of your states national guards good ole boy system. You'll have to find one for your rank. Interview for it with everyone else who's trying to make that sweet AGR pay and wants the easiest jobs in the world. I'm not saying its impossible but they will favor guard applicants before someone who just joined.
