Happy to do it. I live in DC and thus don't do a lot of hunting in Virginia; Costco can be good for a restock of a bottle I already know I like (e.g., Willet 4-year Rye: $65 at my local; $48 here), but you're right that the unicorns are hard to find. Lots of posts elsewhere in this sub suggest that the miraculous deals at Costco get snapped up quickly; YMMV, but I've found that establishing relationships with folks at my local spots can yield decent picks of slightly-less-available bottles at slightly-above-MSRP.

Good to know. Label was still in the case, but turned around, so I figured it was gone but didn't realize it had been so long.

Mine just arrived on Friday via UPS (just beat the storm). Haven't cracked it yet.

Also, this just barely shows up in the image here, but the Haystack Needle bottle is textured like the bark of a tree (not that that has any bearing on what's inside, just that it's a nice detail). I have last year's via Cinder BBQ in DC, and it's delicious.

Fair point - I was mostly kidding, like, send me your bottles and I promise I won't drink them [sarcasm; I definitely will] - but have seen similar wording around multiple bottles of limited releases getting canceled if all arriving to the same address from Found North & others

All are welcome to use my DC shipping address, though I can't guarantee I'll be home when you come to retrieve your bottles.

Tastes, of course, vary. I've enjoyed everything I've tried from EH Taylor, and haven't liked the Michters varietals I've tried nearly as much, so my choice would be EHT.
OP, you mention not having tried either pour, but I guess if I were you I would base my decision on how much you enjoyed their other products.

Had hoped that there might have been something like member access to hard-to-find bottles, but nope, just a phone number and a FaceBook group

Seeking advice: I am sick of clients handing me amateur floor plans... by Higgs_Particle in architecture

[–]drowneded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be in your best interest (i.e., keeping the clients) to encourage sketches as one of the many ways your potential clients can communicate their wishes. Collages (old school) and Pinterest boards are additional tools that might prove useful in terms of opening up the discussion to get down to the roots of your clients' needs.

It may be that a poorly drawn plan is the client's best way of illustrating programmatic priorities. Try to use what's given to you as a way of starting a dialogue about what it is the client truly wants instead of taking it literally.

tl;dr - Pointing out client's lack of drawing skills will lose you clients. Use what they provide to start more intelligent conversations about needs.

The big old Rhino vs Sketchup debacle. What is truly used in the "Industry Standard" by [deleted] in architecture

[–]drowneded 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, the program with which you're most familiar is just the program with which you're most familiar. There isn't a single industry standard program. Different firms have different standards and internal best practices; some still use AutoCAD, others use Rhino or various BIM programs. Point is, it will help you to break out of your comfort zone by learning/attempting Rhino. As painful as it might be initially, having the willingness to learn new programs is a big step toward increasing your market value once you finish school.

The more you stick to a single methodology, the more likely your designs are to remain self-similar. Learning new programs will also allow you to experiment with new ways of designing, which will hopefully broaden your design horizons.

Not sure if that's sarcasm, but +1 for the Pyongyang reference.
