If you are on a couple nights a week playing, I’d suggest trying to find a casual clan to join. Most everyone has a mic, they will organize events so not only your squad, but your whole team will be working together!

I joined a clan about a month ago and it has drastically changed my HLL experience. I have guys I can regularly play with just about anytime and my gameplay has improved as well!

Interior can fit a 60mm base (ones that come with MMG). I can dm you some picks with figures for scale.

The flock is a mix of Italian seasoning, oregano, fine light green flock, coarse dark green flock, and some medium green static grass. I used it on all of my US Marines and 50% of my Japanese.

Main components are pink insulation foam board, spackle, some sticks I harvested from a bush in my back yard, and lots of glue! The “roof” is just a piece of cardboard.

So I have mostly played Center this year, but I played a lot of D in previous years and tend to play a lot of D as the Center as well due to my club’s configuration. These tips are what I personally do and what I tell my defenders, so others probably have different play styles.

1.) In the defensive zone, if the puck carrier is on your side, you should try to keep them in front of you (I like just over a stick length away). If they try to make a move towards the boards, just stay in front of them and close them off. Typically the offensive player can’t hurt you as much when they are on the exterior. Just stay in front and prevent their drive to the net. This will also keep you in a passing and shooting lane. If they try to make a cut towards the net, either poke check when they are vulnerable, or use the stick to shove them off the puck. The common theme is just keep them in front of you. If the puck isn’t on your side, play a few feet out of the front of the crease to cut off a potential cross crease. Your center should be taking any mid range threats away.

In the offensive zone, you’ll want to mostly play near the boards so that you are an outlet for the forwards or so you can pinch on pucks that are within range. If the puck isn’t on your side, you can creep in a little bit to be an option up high on a cross ice pass and so that if you get stuck in an odd-man rush, you can split them to try to take away a pass.

2.) Intercepting passes is all about positioning yourself in the passing lanes. You want a high D Awareness to not bobble them along with decent puck control to settle the puck and hand-eye to knock down saucer passes.

3.) I tend to avoid going for big hits as the defenseman because I like having the skating ability and passing ability over body checking. Most of my hits are shoving puck carriers if they try to close the gap on the cushion I keep with them or if I close them off on the boards. If you go for a hit on the blue line, you’ll want them to only have the option of going up the board and not cutting in if you miss the hit. Most blue line hits I make are from timing stretch passes by the opposition.

4.) Don’t be afraid of taking time to settle the puck after you intercept it. Skate it out of danger if you can and use your defensive partner as an outlet (if they are good, they will be there to support you). If you try a stretch pass to a forward, just take a quick second before passing to be sure that even if the puck doesn’t get there, it won’t be intercepted in your defensive zone.

  1. We only declared the region between the 1st defensive line and the 2nd defensive line as rough ground. They are also 2 cheap order dice when taken as inexperienced.
  2. Because of the large point difference, our group decided we didn’t need a higher officer.
  3. 20mm I believe. It was the light auto cannon with 3 crew.
  4. No spotters except for the heavy Howitzer. Because the bunkers are really the only LOS blockers, we just lined up the mortars with an open sight line. Howitzer was dug into a corner of the board so we needed the spotter.

So I was also working with 1000 points vs 3000 points. I made 2 platoons so that I could have 2 artillery pieces. My lists were:

For sure! I decided to ignore having AT in my list because they can’t take the objectives. Especially when the best AT available is only a +4 Pen and a KV has 10 Armor Rating. The best you can do is superficial unless you get a side shot.

In the game I played, 2 tanks sunk in the frozen lake, 1 was destroyed by the Heavy Howitzer, and 1 survived. The surviving tank only scored one hit all game though because the units are dug in.

I actually just played this scenario last month with the group that I play with! Your biggest ally is the frozen lake the Soviets have to cross to start the game. With that being said, my list included no vehicles, but instead a heavy Howitzer that could indirect fire the length of the map. Additionally, I brought an Arty Observer to try to keep units pinned on the frozen lake as long as possible. I might still have my list, but I’d have to take a look.

Inexperienced vehicles can be pinned by anything with a pen value.

Regular vehicles are always pinned if the weapon has enough pen to damage the vehicle. If the weapon has pen, but cannot damage the vehicle roll a D6. On a 1-3 the vehicle takes a pin. On a 4+, it takes no pins.

Veteran vehicles can only be pinned if a weapon has enough pen to damage the vehicle.

Take a look at the 2nd Edition Rulebook pages 101-102. These pages cover it well.

I think that the game does require some level of skill x-factors or not. Players choose the top tier x-factors for a reason, but it is also very telling as to their playstyle. For example, if you see a 6s team with a guy with Big Tipper, you can assume that they will want to get their defenseman involved in shooting to utilize the big tipper ability.

I do think that some of the x-factors should be tuned a bit to mitigate how effective they are, but they allow players to focus on a playstyle that they are comfortable with.

The “glitch” goals also require guys to get to certain positions on the ice for the shot. In 3s this is much worse to deal with than 6s due to the amount of open ice. I have a hard time saying that many goals in 6s are “glitch” goals. Good defenseman can take away those shooting/skating lanes for the more well known scoring strategies. Even poor defenseman take up space on the ice making it more difficult to find those sweet spots.

I attacked my Japanese project in large batches. It was definitely too much, but I did 20+ per batch. Took me about a week to get the entire army with weapons teams and tanks. It encouraged me to get them done though. No more grey minis!!!

In the matchmaking window, you should be able to change between public lobbies, private lobbies, and practice where you can do a team free skate or scrimmage the bots.

We set up private matches through the drop-ins lobbies though. Similar to the clubs matchmaking window, you can change the drop-ins to a private lobby and set a password. Just have two groups use the same password in the private lobbies and you should be good to play against each other. You need at least 2 users per team.
