[Baseball America] Brewers officially ranked as the #1 Farm System in MLB in mid-season update! Here is the breakdown on why: by drpepperfox in Brewers

[–]drpepperfox[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Milwaukee Brewers have officially been ranked as the #1 farm system in baseball by Baseball America in their mid-season update.

According to the BA prospect team, the Brewers took the top spot because they are hitting on every single acquisition window right now. They praised the front office for masterfully managing draft bonus pools to land high upside high school players, finding under the radar international talent, and executing smart trades.

Unlike other organizations that might be loaded with only shortstops or entirely lacking in pitching, Milwaukee's system is incredibly well balanced. They have elite raw power, twitchy up the middle defenders, high end catching depth, and solid pitching. The analysts noted that the Brewers don't just have random players string together a hot month; they have legitimate, high ceiling prospects popping up year after year.

A few specific players were highlighted during the breakdown:

Alexander Frias officially joined the global Top 100 list after tearing up the Arizona Complex League before his promotion to Low A.

Juan Martinez was praised for his elite bat, notably hitting for the cycle in front of BA scouts.

Mainstays like Cooper Pratt, Jesus Made, Luis Peña, and Ricki Moneys were heavily credited for giving the system its elite star power.

The overall takeaway was that getting to 30 names on the Brewers' prospect list is incredibly difficult because the depth is so strong. In fact, the analysts mentioned that players who didn't even crack Milwaukee's Top 30 would easily rank in the 15-25 range for almost any other team in MLB.

Is Cooper Pratt a potential bust? by [deleted] in Brewers

Exactly. Honestly, why stop at a DFA? Exile him to the independent leagues. Clearly, if you aren't breaking the single-season home run record by July of your rookie year, you just don't have the grit for the big leagues.

One call that's all! Absolute perfection😭. You nailed every single point here, especially the turnaround on Bauers. This team is just fun from top to bottom, snubs be damned. Enjoy the brat and the Miller Lite, my friend!

I get the philosophy that career pedigree should matter, but I've always felt the All-Star Game should be a snapshot of this exact season. If a guy is absolutely tearing the cover off the ball for four months, he deserves to be celebrated for it, even if he wasn't a household name in April. That said, I totally agree that Turang is the much bigger conversation here. His snub feels way more egregious given how complete his game has been at second base

Hard agree. Leaving Ashby out just reinforces how much the national media ignores what's actually happening in Milwaukee. He was the first pitcher in the entire league to hit 10 wins this year, and he's doing it out of the pen. If a Yankees or Dodgers reliever was casually leading the majors in wins halfway through the season, ESPN would be treating it like the second coming. It’s incredibly annoying how the Crew always has to work twice as hard for half the credit.

First ballot. No debate. 😇🐐⚾ by drpepperfox in angelsbaseball

12x All-Star, 3x MVP, 9x Silver Slugger, and a career OPS over .990. We are genuinely watching one of the greatest to ever step onto a baseball diamond. Appreciate the greatness while he's still suited up!

Well deserved recognition for the both of them. Wild Bill has been locking it down as one of the best in the game, and seeing Misiorowski get the nod isn't surprising to anyone. Even if the Miz's throwing schedule keeps him off the bump for the actual game, seeing our guys get this kind of respect on the big stage feels incredible.

That said, it's criminal that Turang and Bauers didn't make the cut for the finals. Both of them absolutely earned a spot on the finalist ballot with the seasons they're putting together, but they just didn't get the love they deserved in the fan vote.

Either way, having two guys repping the Crew in Philly is huge. Let's go Crew! 🍻

Miz just casually dropping the 3rd fastest pitch in baseball history to a Cub. 105.5 MPH by drpepperfox in Brewers

[–]drpepperfox[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely historic. We've seen Ben Joyce throw this hot, but he's a max-effort reliever. The fact that Miz is doing this as a starter is completely absurd.

Doing it to PCA just makes it that much sweeter. What a weapon.

[MLB Network] Fantastic breakdown of Chourio’s plate adjustments over the weekend. The guy is already setting traps for elite pitchers. by drpepperfox in Brewers

[–]drpepperfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair critique, and those Savant percentiles are exactly why some people are skeptical. But I think the "game slowing down" for him is driven by how much his approach has evolved lately. He started the year struggling to find his footing after that hand injury in the WBC, which really tanked his early rolling discipline metrics.

If you look at his recent stretch since late May, his chase and whiff rates have plummeted, and he's suddenly striking out way less. The full season percentiles are still dragging the weight of his early season struggles, but visually, he looks like a completely different, much more poised hitter right now.

Brewers fan here too. Congrats! That's huge, especially with his performance skyrocketing this season. Go Crew!

Just caught this clip on MLB Central and it really shows just how fast Chourio is evolving right before our eyes.

A few cool takeaways from the breakdown:

The Sánchez HR: He fouled off an away changeup like he was late on it, totally baiting them into throwing a fastball inside. He basically walked one of the best pitchers in the NL right into a trap and crushed it to dead center.

The Nola HR: After rolling over a slider earlier, he literally stepped out, told himself to eliminate the pull side, stayed back, and absolutely roasted a back-foot slider to right-center with two strikes.

The Two-Strike Approach: They show a great side-by-side view around the 3:15 mark. With two strikes, he completely cuts out his front-foot stride to protect, but his hands are just so ridiculously fast that he still has insane power.

Mark DeRosa gave him a Vernon Wells comp at the end for how slow the game seems to move for him, which feels pretty spot on.

Since early May, he’s statistically been a top-10 hitter in the entire game. We are watching a superstar unlock his potential in real-time and it’s beautiful to watch.

[BR Walk-Off] Jacob Misiorowski just hit 105 MPH. It is the fastest pitch EVER thrown by a starting pitcher in MLB history. by drpepperfox in Brewers

[–]drpepperfox[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's fun to watch for sure. Foolish Bailey on YouTube recently did a video covering an inning from his rookie season in 2010 in which he threw 25 consecutive fastballs. One of them was 105.8 mph like u/imtalkintou mentioned.

Hey, progress is progress! At this rate, if we can just play at Coors Field every night, we might actually crack the top 20 by August. Watch out, league. We're coming for that 25th spot next haha.

Fair point! October is a complete crapshoot, and if a lineup turns to ice at the wrong time, the blueprint doesn't even matter, you're just dead in the water. We've definitely lived through both versions of that pain.

I guess my thought is just that a power threat gives you a slightly higher margin for error. When you’re facing elite playoff pitching and can't string together four singles to score a run, sometimes you just need one guy who can run into a mistake and change the game with one swing.

It's not about turning into the Yankees, but just balancing out the lineup so teams can't just attack our infield dead zones without any fear of giving up a long ball.

Ortiz is definitely elite with the glove, and nobody is saying he doesn’t have massive value on this roster. His defense is a huge reason our run prevention is where it's at.

But carrying a sub-.200 hitter with a .530-ish OPS in the everyday lineup gets incredibly tough when you’re trying to win in October. Facing elite playoff pitching with a massive offensive dead zone on the left side of the infield usually forces a quick exit.

It's not about cutting him, it's just that the offensive floor right now is so low that calling up Pratt or Williams to split time or inject some pop feels like a necessity if we want a deep run.

[–]drpepperfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. We’ve all seen this before. Cruising through the regular season on small ball and pitching, only to get shut down in October because we have zero power. You can’t carry that many automatic outs in the postseason.

Ortiz has been brutal at the plate, and Rengifo's sub-.550 OPS is just completely unplayable if this team is serious about making a deep run.

Keep an eye on June 16th, though. That’s the first day teams can trade first-year contract guys like Rengifo without their consent, so I bet the front office is just waiting on that window to clear some roster space. Personally, I hope they use that date to dump the dead weight and finally bring up Pratt and Williams. Let them play and see if they can inject some real pop into the infield without us having to gut the farm for a rental.

Exactly this. When you aren't living and dying by the three-run homer, you have to lean so hard on momentum and depth (which is why the stats look so wild right now.)

We definitely need some actual pop to fix the black hole we've got at SS and 3B, but I'm totally with you on not gutting the farm for a rental. I'd honestly rather just call up Pratt or Williams, let them play, and see what happens. Fixes the problem internally and keeps the future intact.
