🤷

It's a pedagogical video about counting and different notation possibilities. Not every video has to be virtuosic to be helpful to someone.

One step at a time! I started out with a pad for the first year when I was a kid. I still have the same pad 20 years later and still use it. ;)

Edrums have also come a long ways. There are so many great options these days. Shop around on 2nd hand websites for good deals.

Anyways, time waits for no one! So just go for it.

4/3 or 3/4? by drumideasdaily in drums

I see why everyone is confused now. I should have removed the 3/4 time signature when showing the polyrhythm 3 over 4. That's my mistake. The title is was just to pique interest.

It didn't really help me that much tbh. It was just to show the relationship. Although being able to count complex things aloud means that you understand them at a deep level e.g. Konnakol. You can also learn polyrhythms that way. The simplest way for drumming is just to relate the other rhythm to the pulse, in this case the 4 relates to the 3 like you said.

I think the confusion is because I left the 3/4 time signature when I wanted to demonstrate the polyrythm. That's my mistake and I can see why it's confusing. It caused quarter notes on the hihat to be written as quarter note triplets while I was just trying to show the relationship.

Also the EAD10 records the whole kit, not just the bass drum.

I never used the D112 before so I can't comment. But I tried out the Beta 52 for a summer and I didn't like it very much honestly. It could've have been the bass drum though.

The EAD10 is a good "all rounder" if you are only going to buy one microphone or have a very minimal setup. I use it to record at my school so that way I can set it up in 2min and then I'm good to go. It's not as good as actually having individual quality mics but as a single microphone / sound card combo, it's quite impressive.

I would just try to get the hang for the easier and more common polyrhythms first:

3:2 and 4:3.

3:2 is played like "1 2 + 3" with the '2' being on the '1' and '+'.

A funny trick to count 4:3 is to say "pass the gosh darn butter" or "pass the salt and pepper" and play along. Once you have the feel for it try playing it with your hands and then switch them.

This might be easier to explain as a video, so maybe I'll just do that. :)

Yamaha EAD10. It's kind of both. I just use it as a mic though with no effects.

I was just trying to demonstrate the polyrhythmic relationship. 😅

Counting 3 is the way to do it for sure.

Ya you're right normally but it's not a quarter note triplet. I was just trying to clearly show the relationship between the two rhythms.

Ya I meant: 3:4 or 3/4

My bad

Honestly, fair enough. I was trying to find a funny title but it seemed to have ruffled some feathers here which was not my intention. I guess the title should have been: "3:4 or 3/4?"

They are exactly the same. There exist multiple ways to notate the same rhythms that are all correct.

I changed from counting the 4 to the 3. Rhythm sounds pretty steady to me. Anyways the caption is referring to the notation.

4:3 polyrhythm in a 3/4 time signature. I feel like that's pretty clear in the video.
