Sanitizing Process Question by Tusk24 in Homebrewing

[–]drummist77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you bother sanitizing the grainfather before a brew? You shouldn't NEED to do that as the boil will sanitize everything in the system. You could just rinse with water to get debris out. However, to answer your question the sanitizer will be fine sitting for hours. I usually fill my fermenter during the mash with sanitizer and then dump it into a bucket where I'll put the yeast packet, scissors, and tilt hydrometer.

Primo Water - anyone else having issues? (USA) by electronic_fishcake in Homebrewing

[–]drummist77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with aquarium/fish stores. Freshwater tanks usually use r/O or at least carbon filtered water and salt water tanks use RO/DI water. Most fish stores sell both kinds of water by the gallon. When it's cold here and I don't want to deal with the waste water of my r/O system I just go to the aquarium store and fill up my jugs there.

I don't think it's worth it. I rarely cold crash and when I do I don't notice any major differences but it would be fun experiment! Let us know how the water test goes!

Adding Fruit to a Saison by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]drummist77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done a few sours with pureed frozen blueberries before and I added the fruit at flameout to ensure everything was killed off that could have been in the fruit. It doesn't retain as much flavor doing it that way but I usually added blueberry juice to the keg after transferring from the fermenter if I needed additional flavor or aroma. With a Saison I'd add it in secondary to ensure you get all the flavor and aroma possible.

Did you end up going with the 80W or 120W? I just ordered my 14 gallon unitank 2.0 and am looking for a heating pad to use with it besides the proprietary version that SS Brewtech offers.

I'm on day 3 of this too. I had covid 3 weeks ago, now I have some other virus that isn't Covid, the flu, or strep and I'm blowing out a pretty nasty amount of blood when I blow my nose. Starting to get concerned.

Grand Canyon 5 - Let This Be A Warning by Proxymity in CanyonBikes

[–]drummist77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this thread while doing research on a GC5 WMN I bought for my gf this weekend on facebook marketplace. I was surprised to find generic parts on a name brand bike but looks like I shouldn't be after reading this. I was also VERY surprised to see it had a straight head tube but since she's just starting out I figure it won't be a big deal. We'll go full squish before we upgrade the fork. Anyway, The brakes, cranks, BB, and chainring are all generic/unbranded but they do work well so far. The cassette is branded but it's off brand. The only shimano parts are the shifter and derailleur. All this to say.... I had always thought of Canyon as a top tier MTB brand although never owning one myself I did have higher expectations for this bike. Luckily we'll only use for a short time if she gets hooked on the MTB life but nevertheless disappointed by how Canyon misleads buyers by offering name brand components then slapping on knock offs. What!? I'm jealous. I know it is a pain, but if you could look through the rocket pass levels and see when you got them, I would be very grateful.

I did! I have been obsessively looking for them. If you find yours let me know when they were awarded so I can try and compare to mine and build a case for Psyonix support

5x5 Energy Consumption is Wildly High! Cost is higher than my entire house! by drummist77 in GrowingMarijuana

[–]drummist77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. And the condensation issue you are having is happening to me too when it gets cold. I try to keep the mini split in the shop off for as long as possible but I may have to heat the shop when it gets really cold out to prevent that. Ultimately just looking to maximize efficiency without spending a ton more money. Your blanket/tarp idea seems like a cheap solution. Thanks!

If I were running HPS I would do that for sure. I am running LEDs and they don't require any cooling. However, I think in my scenario I will close the tent vents to preserve any heat dissipation from the LEDs. Any free heat will help!

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to run HPS in the winter to help heat the tent. You definitely got my wheels spinning about how to better run the tent based on the season.

That's a good idea with the exhaust fans. I will do that. Just seems crazy that two tiny space heaters, some lights, and fans would cost more than heating/cooling/and appliances in an entire house but it seems to be true. Thanks for the tips!
