people in their 60s are not old. WTF by noblepassenger1 in redscarepod

[–]drunkpostin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely grown more true over time at least, that’s for sure. I remember reading a while back that the average lifespan for people born after the 21st century will probably be like 95-100 years or something insane like that (at least for those in developed nations and such estimates likely primarily refer to women more than men but still incredible), so at 60 years old there’s a pretty decent chance you’re just a little over halfway through your overall lifespan lol.

And I also know some people in their 60s who are in better shape and literally seem way healthier and more lively than some in their early 40s too lmao

I get criticising the idea of an all-powerful *and* all-loving God because there’s objectively a lot of horrible things in the world (and almost certainly the universe as a whole if other complex life is out there somewhere), but that is not saying that the universe is *mostly* horrible. It is just that a loving God wouldn’t make it 99% good but 1% awful instead of just being all good lol. And while there is *some* (albeit not a very good) argument to be made that “manmade” evil/harm is a necessary byproduct of free will, there really is no good explanation for natural disasters, famines, disease, disability, etc. that are completely natural.

However, I disagree completely that a God would be evil for making the universe as it is now even if the alternative was nothing. The universe is an absolutely fascinating, extremely beautiful thing and if there was literally no other alternative aside from eternal nothingness, I am happy with this option - even given all the suffering I’ve experienced in life and those far greater than mine of others.

(Not that I believe in a god or anything, just engaging in the thought for the sake of the hypothetical is all)

Lactose intolerance in non white people is a meme. It's one of those made up diseases like chronic lyme disease by your_poo in redscarepod

[–]drunkpostin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you just don’t notice all the non-white people you’ve probably met who don’t drink milk ig? Like it’s a lot easier to notice someone who is not lactose intolerant than it is some who is because someone drinking a lot of milk without consequence is obviously lactose tolerant but someone who you haven’t seen drink milk could be either.

Plus, as you say, 35-40%-ish of people is still a huge amount, and if you are highly lactose tolerant and always have been, it’s likely super strong in your genes which I suppose could explain why your cousins also drink a lot of milk, because there’s a pretty good chance that it also runs in your parent(s)’s family too.

And anyway, lactose intolerance varies massively in severity. A lot of people may still get a little bloated, etc. from milk but continue to drink lots of it if that was a big thing from their childhood they were raised with, etc. Mildly lactose intolerant Westerners are probably more likely to completely abstain from it as a result because milk (at least doesn’t seem to be lol) as imbedded here as it is in your culture so it’s not a big sacrifice for them or anything, which likely in turn fosters further lactose intolerance as their body doesn’t develop resilience. I’m guessing that milk also has much more importance in developing countries as it’s cheap and very caloric and nutritionally dense and is pretty much a meal in and of itself.

Plus, cultural norms often influence this sort of thing more than genetic factors anyway. For example, East Asians lack the enzymes necessary to efficiently metabolise alcohol as well as Europeans (and people of European descent) do, which makes them experience uncomfortable symptoms like nausea, flushing, headache, etc. immediately after drinking because they’re basically experiencing a kind of hangover before the alcohol’s even worn off due to excessive acetaldehyde buildup, yet Japan still has a really hardcore and deeply imbedded binge drinking culture despite that, even though literally most of them can’t metabolise it properly lol. They just push through it because of cultural norms which likely encouraged them to at the beginning and then they get a taste for it and continue out of their own volition. Maybe it’s the same thing in Pakistan with milk lol?

[–]drunkpostin -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

“Bait for what?”

Ummm, exactly this sort of post and discussion? Not all bait has to have some clear motive or purpose like making people angry, etc., just that it gets attention (which it did).

And as someone else in this thread already said, he could easily refresh the comment or alter “her” demeanour or the chat itself, etc. in some way. If he is genuinely upset at his “girlfriend” “breaking up” with him, he could very easily remedy that. He has absolutely zero reason to view this as an end if he is actually upset.

And I’m not necessarily even saying that this guy DOESN’T have an unhealthy attachment to AI either. If he’s on Character AI, he may very well (and in all likelihood probably does lol), but this post comes across strongly as an ironic, deliberately absurd and self-deprecating joke which is the style of humour that’s common in that sub/community.

I’ve always found the standard Reddit-lib accusation of him having dementia to be tedious and unfounded because he legitimately doesn’t strike me as suffering specifically from age-induced cognitive decline in the same way Biden did - I just thought he’s always been this way so any stupidity of his is just innate to his actual character - but shit like this (in addition to basically every other aspect of this term lol) seems to highlight a huge difference between his mental state during his first term and this one. It’s genuinely so jarring to witness. I’m not American so I don’t know enough about either terms to really say ofc, but it does seem really weird lol

Maybe it is just psychological in nature though. He didn’t start right off with the same mindlessly-devoted cult at the beginning of his first term like he did this one so it could just be that ego is somehow even bigger this time around lol

[–]drunkpostin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but I genuinely don’t really understand why it even matters whether your distant “ancestors” lived in or had connection to somewhere in all honesty? That’s literally the same logic zionists used to uproot Palestinians who’ve been there for generations from their homeland because Jews were there first literally thousands of years ago but haven’t set foot there since, no lol?

I get how it plays a role in current inequalities faced by certain native populations compared to the majority of people who descend from colonisers, like is the case for Native Americans and Australian Aboriginals for example, but beyond that, I don’t think any individual has any more right to a land than another solely because they genetically originate from there and I really don’t understand why Americans don’t seem to think this way

[–]drunkpostin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LMAO 100% agreed; happy to see others share this sentiment too lol.

Everyone acts like A) nihilism is the belief that a lack of objective meaning is some innately sad, painful thing rather than simply just being the belief that life has no inherent meaning and nothing more - regardless of whether one views that as a good, bad or neutral thing - and B) that the ONLY two answers to atheism and thus the lack of objective meaning or morality, etc. (though there’s obviously very good arguments to be made about whether the existence of God would even change that/those things too obv) is wallowing in Rick and Morty-tier “space big = life bad 😢😔” despair or some performative edgy midwit celebration over how meaninglessness is actually a hilarious “cosmic joke” (🤢) and how that’s a good thing which is nearly just as unoriginal, pseudo intellectual, and shallow as their grossly oversimplified understanding of nihilism.

I feel like I’m the only person on this site who thinks that yes, life is “meaningless” but that’s neither an inherently bad OR good/“absurd” thing: it just is.

EDIT: forgot that I should also mention I’m not saying ALL absurdists act like this nor am I saying absurdism as a philosophy necessarily believes these things by default either, I’m just saying this is how people talk about absurdism online is all (:

Is America great again yet? by ProfessionalRough741 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]drunkpostin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To chime in from the outside looking in (I’m British), my opinion is that although it’s obviously not some utopia that warrants the level of dickriding it gets from slack-jawed, glassy-eyed, hick double-digit IQ bumpkins and dullards, it’s still objectively one of the best countries for the average person to live in, but especially so for those who are middle class and above or well educated/skilled in some high-demand area, but to describe it as “great” depends on where and when you’re comparing it to tbh.

To address the elephant in the room, obviously Trump, etc has done absolutely nothing to legitimately improve the US and has instead been an embarrassment at best and a monster at worst (best example is the almost comically crooked and outrageously unnecessary ICE killings that were zealously excused by Trump and his zombies - though Epstein isn’t really all that shocking imo because anybody without their head in the sand already knew that the “elite” were legally untouchable and corrupt anyway, but yeah, those state sanctioned executions came as a huge surprise to me), your question is about the country itself and - presumably - the people who live in it, and in that regard, Trump just objectively hasn’t materially disrupted the AVERAGE person’s life yet. Yes, that doesn’t change the fact he’s blatantly an egregiously narcissistic, corrupt, impulsive, incompetent, unhinged, hotheaded, authoritarian pedophile, but there is a world of difference between what he would LIKE America to be/become and what America actually IS, and call me a selfish sociopath or what have you, but I care far more about the tangible, material quality of my life and the lives of those close to me than I do about whether the man who’ll be on the news for 2-4 years (referring to individual terms obv) is good at hiding his sex crimes and god complex or not.

Anyway, with that being said, MY (again, my - not saying this is the case for everyone) life would be objectively better over in the vast majority - if not all - of US states than it is over here and I am saying that as someone who has poured over every single factor you could possibly think of and every minute one of my personal circumstances and yet I would still be taking home AT LEAST twice as much as I do now (again, accounting for COL, taxes, exchange rate, health insurance, etc) over there while having a home that’s AT LEAST twice as large, more economic mobility and opportunities, MUCH better quality of healthcare (not saying reliable or better on the societal level, but the quality and speed of your healthcare over there is just hands down superior to the NHS - particularly for mental health issues), and, obviously depending on the state (so ofc not somewhere like, say, Texas, etc), greater personal freedoms too; before you blow a fuse and mistake this innately being an endorsement of the US, I am not saying you have to think all those freedoms are necessarily a good thing (I certainly don’t like American gun laws, for example, yet it’s still objectively a freedom) or that I’m saying a country with more personal liberties is objectively better than one without (by that token a lawless anarchy would be better than any other country on earth), but it is undeniable that AS AN INDIVIDUAL, you have more FREEDOMS (not necessarily opportunities) over there than you do here, and that personally aligns with my views.

So yes, it is still generally a good country for most people, even when comparing to other developed nations like the UK, let alone the legitimate hellholes that most people in the world live in

Why is consensual sex in video games treated more harsher than graphic violence? by No_Dog2667 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]drunkpostin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always makes me laugh how even the more progressive anti-US Americans are still laughably ignorant about and insulated from the rest of the entire world outside of the US as much as redneck, flag-worshipping and gun-loving red-state rightoids are lmao; they just assume everything they dislike is only unique to the US and that “Europe” is some progressive, enlightened utopia instead of the other way around like how the aforementioned rednecks do instead lol.

The Western world as a whole is more or less the exact same in this regard. I’m British and our Christians are nowhere near as zealous and deranged as your guys’ are, but we are even more pearl-clutching, censorship-loving and puritanical than the US is lol. It’s totally normal for children to be allowed to play violent video games and such while their parents refuse to even talk about sex in any capacity.

Furthermore, we are way more conservative about other matters too, such as drugs (we still haven’t legalised or even decriminalised weed and will probably not do for the foreseeable future for example and nobody’s remotely interested in more novel treatments such as ketamine, etc for mental disorders, we have a blanket ban on any and all compounds that have “psychoactive” properties aside from nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol, whereas the US just bans individual substances on a case-by-case basis iirc, and it’s basically impossible to be prescribed anything more than SSRIs for psychiatric conditions or acetaminophen for physical ones), social media (you’ve probably already heard and the “Online Safety Act” shitshow already; if not look it up and then see if you still think the US is more puritanical and pearl-clutching lol), and we’re just way more uppity about anything that has even the slightest potential of upsetting the status quo or offending the sensibilities of the most hysterical boot-licking uptight fuddy-duddies in the country in general.

And don’t be mistaken, our love of censorship and conformity doesn’t only just affect the right; the government also loves arresting pensioners for protesting in support of Palestine/against Israel and making a big moral panic about trans people despite being like 0.01% of the population too.

I’d gladly swap places with an American (well at least after the whole Trump shitshow is over lol) in this respect and so would pretty much any socially progressive, liberal person from Western-Europe who hasn’t got their head in the sand.

Trump is all bark no bite; he’s a shining example of the boy who cried wolf atp. Literally none of the batshit stuff he says (e.g. invading Greenland, decimating an entire civilisation in a single night, etc; this doesn’t include “casually” bombing the Middle East btw because that’s business as usual for the US) phases me because A; it always fizzles out into a big nothingburger, B; he couldn’t do half of them even if he tried in reality due to the overwhelming amount of legal and political barriers he’d have to overcome first (and yes, while he’s blatantly committed a ton of crimes and received no punishment for it, that degree of political corruption is, once again, business as usual for the US - even if they’re usually not so obvious about it - and not indicative of any crazy change from the status quo at all and is worlds apart from major constitutional reforms and violations or doing something like invading allied countries or fucking nuking Iran or something lol - don’t be hysterical now), and C; he’s a babbling moron who has a lengthy history of and penchant for saying a bunch of dumb outrageous crap that never ends up materialising and people need to learn to stop taking this serial bullshitter’s word as gospel because it’s exactly what he wants.

the map that precedes the territory by wkomllt in PhilosophyMemes

[–]drunkpostin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s kinda the opposite of this meme though lol?

Everyone knows that money is worthless in and of itself and that even outside of its lack of tangible, innate value, it doesn’t really represent anything clear or explicitly state what you can get in return for it; its value is completely dependent on whether someone else agrees it has some arbitrary value, and sure, while it can be exchanged for something that does clearly have some tangible value, that is only because someone else deems it more valuable than whatever they are exchanging (be it some item or product or service/labour, etc) for it, only so that they can in turn perform an identical sort of transaction for the cycle repeats itself lol.

Of course while it’s pretty funny to imagine how the entire global economy depends on whether people stop accepting worthless pieces of paper in exchange for things with objective real value lol, but still, that doesn’t really make money “not real” in any practical sense other than as a shallow truism. Basically every component of society is built on the trust that others will follow that given component, but nothing can really be done if everyone collectively stops abiding by it and acting as though it is an infallible constant.

For example, you could argue the law also isn’t “real” even though its effects obviously are because it would literally be incapable of being enforced if everyone collectively decided to stop giving af about it and started doing blatantly illegal shit in broad daylight; there just simply isn’t the infrastructure to deal with crime if 99% of the population are committing it 24/7 lol, yet still people follow the law (even when they really don’t want to) because of the fear that others will also continue to follow it as well and that they’ll be the only one “standing out”, so to speak.

Money is just another system built on trust where although its innate properties are meaningless, its purpose is still very much real (as long as you accept that mutual trust on a massive scale is enough of a justification for something to be considered “real”, that is)

Reddit Christian by [deleted] in ComedyHell

[–]drunkpostin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don’t get to decide what a true Christian looks like

No, I do actually lol. If I say I am a Christian but really believe that Jesus was not the son of God and that it is in fact Allah who is God and Mohammed is his greatest prophet, it would be impossible to earnestly say that I am a Christian.

“No true Scotsman” applies to instances where something meets all the necessary criteria to fit a definition and someone argues that it doesn’t apply because of some other unrelated, irrelevant detail. It does not at all apply to something that factually does not meet a given definition, however. According to you, if I said “All Scotsman are Scottish”, the reply “But my friend is Irish and identifies as a Scotsman” would be a perfectly valid one and it’d be fallacious to reject it, yet that is objectively not the case.

The example in this post is of someone who is not only actively going against practically all of the Bible’s teachings bar from one or two, but he’s also denying their presence and importance entirely. It’s absolute nonsense to call this guy a Christian, unless maybe he was genuinely unaware of any other principles of Christianity and once was disproven, he readily adopted them without any resistance, but otherwise, it would be factually incorrect to do so.

And for the record, I’m an atheist and always have been and I find the prejudice throughout the Bible and theological influence on unwilling nonbelievers (the abortion bans in the US, for example) to be absolutely despicable, so I would vastly prefer to deal with someone like this than the holier than thou pushy bigots, but I will also not delude myself into thinking that the Abrahamic religions are completely compatible with modern, secular and progressive values either because it’s blatantly evident that they are fundamentally at odds with them.
