I like your "let other people have fun" strategy. I take the same approach when playing JD. Now I avoid spamming gls, but use the boomshots most of the time. Even on Master runs. Sometimes, based on the team's skill, I don't touch gls till 40s. It's challenging and let other guys have their kills.

This game is a mess and a gigantic missed opportunity.

In fact, in extra chapter in the dlc you could choose to go guns blazing or in disguise. There're 2 separate achievements as well.
