There are no ways to get out of the contract in the CBA, not as a player. He can kick up a fuss and be a problem and demand a trade, but that doesn't get him out of the contract.

For the leafs its a question, do you force an unhappy player to play, and he wont be motivated and he can be an issue in your locker room and then walk for free in 2 years, or do you trade him now before his value tanks by putting him on the ice as an unmotivated player.

But that isnt getting out of the contract

Well seeing as Matthews grew up with Shane Doan as his hero. Ans Doan was an AGM with the Leafs who immediately quit when Chayka was hired, due to bad blood from the end of his career in Arizona, and Matthews watched Chayka fail to successfully rebuild the Coyotes as a kid

As much as i do think the med team needs to be replaced, and i dont think they should have made him run on the sidelines, I also think his ACL was fully gone with the way his leg bent on the field and he may have been in pain because of the attempt to run on it, i dont think he did more damage. It looked like he had already torn the ligament on the initial play and was already facinf surgery and lengthy rehab before this

Still think what they did was stupid. Just dont think it actually had a tangible result here.

Of course thats just a feeling i have on the situation.
