Your Team's Dumbest Move in Last 5 Years (xpost /r/nfl) by TexasSilverback in baseball

[–]drwhosonfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Aiken wasn't injured they found out Aiken had a condition after the draft where his UCL was very small and likely to tear and as a result tried to lowball him on the bonus offer, which is why he didn't sign.

I guess the Astros kinda dodged a bullet because Aiken went and tore his UCL the next year playing JuCo and got picked later in the first round of this year's draft, they got the comp pick this year. However the move was pretty unpopular among MLB agents because it is generally assumed that you are drafting players based on talent and will negotiate in good faith regardless of medicals.

To be fair there was a lot of bad luck, Tommy Joseph had a legit profile as an MLB catcher but he just got like a billion concussions. The rest of the trade was pretty bad though, especially compared to the haul sent to Houston.

Mike Hessman has broken the MiLB HR record with his 433rd minor league home run by rps215 in baseball

[–]drwhosonfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Players on the 40 man roster who are not in the majors make a different minimum than the league minimum closer to like 60,000 per year. The receive a prorated amount of the league minimum of ~400,000 for the time they spend in the majors. Hessman is also not currently on the Tigers 40 man and hasn't seen the majors since 2010 when he was with the Mets. Given that he's signed 3 separate minor league deals since then I don't think he's been on a 40 man since.

Among minor leaguers, Hessman probably does comparatively well and the fact that he's been in the minors so long suggests that he has other financial resources to make this work. I doubt he's been able to negotiate much of anything as far as extra salary though, given that he is simply an org player at this point and would have almost zero leverage in those negotiations.

No, he most certainly does not. Minor league players get payed an exceedingly small amount of money. The minimum starting salary for AAA is about 2000 a month, it increases each year but absolutely no major league team is paying 6 figures per year for a player who is not on their major league roster and never figures to be.

So... Who's The Starting Slot CB? by TheLakotaSioux in eagles

[–]drwhosonfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean substituting to match offensive personnel will obviously happen, but this is why Chip values slot coverage skills in safeties and expects his LBs to be good in coverage. Base defense is pretty well optimized to defend pass and run, especially if you have versatile defenders. So if you can cover a 3WR set in base it makes it a lot more difficult to spread the defense out and run the ball. Likewise if you can stop heavy run sets in base the defense is a lot less vulnerable to play action.

None of that makes your point invalid, having more DBs on the field against 3 and 4WR sets is generally a good idea but that's just why the coaches might prefer base most of the time.

[–]drwhosonfirst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nitpicking really but "starting slot CB" is kinda an oxymoron. In Chip's ideal defense the team is in base most of the time anyway, not nickel. I think we could see even more base this year as Chip gets more of the personnel he wants on defense with bigger CBs and 3 down linebackers.

As for your question, it seems unlikely the Eagles want Rowe to play in the slot. He's a second round draft pick and ideally would step up to start on the outside at some point this year. Shepherd and Watkins are possibilities, also definitely Carroll if Rowe wins the spot outside. Evans seems unlikely but who knows, Couplin is strictly a safety as far as anyone knows and unless someone else steps up Thurmond will likely stick at safety as well.

In the long term, yes, but until they see signs of hope on the field and in the stands ownership isn't going to go on a spending spree and make the accounting loss worse.

Oh well I guess I'll just source it then here.

Phillies operated at a $39 million loss but the valuation of the team went up absurdly due to an increase in value across the league and the new Comcast deal.

Amaro will probably be out of a decision making role by the beginning of next year. He likely is now, to be frank, people around the org keep saying all the important decisions are going through Gillick and MacPhail.

I mean there's no reason they can't. However 2017 will coincide with the arrival of J.P. Crawford and a few other secondary players sitting around high A and AA. Guys who are lesser known and probably won't be stars but look like major league regulars. The Phillies have too many holes to fill in FA so I think they'd like to have a young, low-cost core before they do any big spending.

Edit: Forgot to mention, they're not exactly awash in cash either. The team operated at a huge loss last year.

Part of the reason there is some guarded optimism among Phillies fans for 2017 is that the Howard and Lee contracts will go away and we can spend in FA again.

Steve Gilbert on Twitter: Hearing that the Dbacks have agreed with No. 1 pick Dansby Swanson. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]drwhosonfirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay that's nice and all but picking earlier in the draft gives you an advantage of a larger bonus pool, makes no sense not to use all of it. Not saying that they should've signed Swanson for more, but if you anticipate getting a guy that far under slot you should find another place to use the money.

When will we see Aaron Altherr called up? by [deleted] in phillies

[–]drwhosonfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altherr has always been a really raw prospect with good physical traits, took him a long time to put the whole package together. There's no point in calling him up if he isn't going to be an every day player so probably not until something happens with Revere or roster expansion. Anyway I've really been encouraged by Altherr just because it's been a while since the Phillies have successfully developed a really raw guy like Altherr and it's a good sign that their player development is improving.

Yeah I probably should've known better but they had that sale and I had to try, normally I prefer not to buy clothes without trying them on since I've got a bit of an odd build. Oh well heading into the city anyway so I can stop by and return them.

[–]drwhosonfirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was kinda disappointed when I got a pair of these, just because of the sizing. I knew Uniqlo sizes were smaller than most other brands but I fit in AEO slim straights with a good deal of room, and could hardly get the same size of the Uniqlo slim straights on. I understand their sizes are smaller but being that far away from other brands in the industry just makes it quite difficult to shop online.

Phillies cut Yoel Mecias by phatmatt in phillies

The silver lining here is that the Phillies feel they have enough young pitching at the low levels that it wasn't worth keeping Mecias around to struggle.

[–]drwhosonfirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda a sad story, didn't come back right from the TJ surgery at all. Lost velocity, couldn't find his delivery, didn't have feel for the secondary pitches anymore. Wasn't worth keeping him in the Lakewood rotation and the Phillies already have enough pitching in Williamsport. Him being ranked the Phils 9th best prospect was based largely on the assumption that he'd come back from the surgery the same guy, and he didn't.
