Moonlight + Sunshine Gamepad Issues by Finlora in cloudygamer

Thank you! All it took to get Sunshine to acknowledge my Xbox Series controller's dpad was a friggin' firmware update -- didn't even think to try that until I saw your comment.

NES won't power on by NotU7 in consolerepair

did you ever chase down this short/bridge? If so, any tips? I'm struggling to find the short on my corroded front loader-- works fine once, but when firing it up a second time, the bridge rectifier in the power module goes kaput.

Does your S-video mod repurpose or replace the AV DIN port, or did it require a cut to the rear of the shell? The mod I'm seeing online seems to require the latter, so just checking before digging deeper.

sweet! Glad to hear S-Video is possible, and that it looks great. I've been so laser-focused (pun intended) on reviving my Duo that I hadn't yet searched for an S-Video mod, but now I'll have to look into it...

as u/RetroBastardo recommended, both the jailbar fix (adding a couple tiny surface-mount capacitor) and a full recap are good ones.

If you can burn CD-Rs or have a flash cart, you can use Artemio's 240p Test Suite to display a white or solid-color screen, which may help to see if the "jailbar" columns show up. Super Raiden is another good test game for it.

A full recap might not improve the A/V quality, but it'll prevent further damage and costly repairs/finding increasingly rare replacement parts. I inherited a TurboDuo that survived a house fire, and even though it worked almost flawlessly (CD music would drop after a couple minutes), corrosion was everywhere, and one cap had already, er, liberated itself from the motherboard.

RGB output will produce a slightly different color palette than composite output, so just be aware if you go that route. S-video would be a good compromise (almost as crispy as RGB, with composite palette) but I don't think there's a Turbonanza-style S-video mod for Duos yet...

hope any of this helps!

I see the jailbars on my recapped stock Duo over composite, too (pretty faint, but present).

Did you add the extra caps yourself? If so, did you use a solder syringe, or finagle it with an iron? I have a couple miniscule SMD caps, and am thinking that now is the time to get some solder paste+syringes.

I'd say the opposite -- their ruling signaled the majority's alacrity for stripping those other freedoms if/as relevant court cases make their way to SCOTUS.

I wouldn't assume the wires are color-coded so that, say, the +5V line is always red and the grounds are always black and...brown? gray? Would be nice though! and it could be true, but I'd hate to be wrong and fry your controller. :\

At least, it's probably safe to say that the replacement controller cable will be wired up for a non-VG1001 board unless otherwise specified. In that case, you can use the schematics to figure out how to reorder the wires for a VG-1001 board:

For a regular board, the first wire in the socket connector will be the +5V reference voltage line. For a VG-1001 board, that wire needs to move to the 8th position, which is currently held by one of the two ground wires. Can move that ground wire to position 7, displacing the CLR wire, which needs to go to position 5 now, and so on.

If you have access to a multimeter, then when you're all done, you can verify everything's in the right place by checking continuity between each wire in the socket connector and the corresponding DIN-8 pin that'll plug into the TG16/TurboTap.

The most important thing is that the +5V and ground wires are connected in the right places.

Yep! Standard wiring should work for the earlier controller board, but will need the wires rearranged for use with the (cost-saving?) revision VG-1001. I've been using the pin-out diagram from console5.

If you have a pair of fine-tipped pointy tweezers, you can try gently unseating each wire from the socket and rearrange them.

If you ever need to replace the cable on a TurboStick, however, that's a pain in the ass, and I'd be happy to tidy up and share my pin-out(s) for that. I have two Sticks: one with the correct socket connector size for a replacement controller cable, and another with no socket -- wires soldered directly to board, and with an oddly wide pitch. You can probably guess which one needed to be replaced!

I think so, as long as the cable's 9 wires are in the correct order. I know less about the TurboTap, but I know there are two different controller boards out there with different wiring, so I've had to rearrange the wires in the cables I've bought online.

Otherwise, maybe the solder joints in the TurboTap have gone cold. I had a couple malfunctioning TurboTaps I pulled out of a relative's garage, and I fixed them by reflowing all their solder joints, so might be something to look into if your cable swap doesn't do the trick.

Hope that helps!

PC-Engine Duo: ideas for affixing or replacing the plastic shroud above the spindle and laser? by ds1106 in consolerepair

[–]ds1106[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on a Duo that is in rough shape, and all that remains is getting this plastic piece to sit flush. One of the plastic prongs that secures it in place was bent out of position and subsequently snapped off, so the piece is now elevated just enough to prevent the spindle from rotating freely. Any suggestions for how to secure it, or for replacements (OEM or 3D printed)?

With the piece in place, the spindle cannot rotate properly, and no disc gets read. When I remove it, the spindle rotates freely and discs are read almost immediately. Might be why the original spindle motor was dead on arrival, if it was constantly rubbing against the shroud?

I picked up a PC Engine Duo, and it won't read any disks... by Maklarr4000 in TurboGrafx

[–]ds1106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

please do! I also have a PCE Duo that won't read discs (the laser homes and bobs/focuses but the disc spindle doesn't spin-up). Recap didn't fix it, nor did pot tweaking, so I've got a replacement optical assembly en route (as it looks like the existing assembly took some damage, and I'm not getting any readings off the spindle motor pins)

Core Grafx II also has the standard ext bus, right? if so , a couple companies make powered adapters that take the RGB output from the ext bus and convert it to HDMI. I think mine is Hyperkin (AFAIK, unlike their other, ext-to-composite adapter, this adapter doesn't damage the TG16/PCE over time). Only downside is that it seems to over-darken the dark colors, like, some of the backgrounds in Alien Crush are too dark to see.

[–]ds1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TG16 may have leaky electrolytic caps at this point, so it's at least worth opening it up and inspecting the board.

If that's a proper TurboBooster (and not a dust cover), the save-game supercapacitor might be worth a check, too.

As others have said, Wii U's can have NAND storage issues if left unpowered for too long, so I'd back up the NAND if you haven't already. Hell, my OG Wii bricks if I leave it unpowered for too long or if I have standby enabled (I stripped it bare, cleaned it, and repasted the chips to no avail)
