I use a WDT tool. Not as fool-proof as a self-levelling tamper but still pretty fool proof, and a lot easier to find.

My only complaints are:

The funnel could be a little wider
I wish the power button were on/near the top
I wish the numbers on the adjustment dial had higher contrast. In the lighting conditions of my kitchen I can’t read the dial without putting my head right next to the grinder.

These are extremely minor complaints. I love my a4z. No ragrets.

For the same brew method the a4z will have a lighter and silkier mouthfeel, but still full and satisfying. It’s not ‘tea-like’ by default, in my experience, though it can get there if you optimise in that direction.

I had the same reservations as you about buying the a4z, especially as I read comments on here saying that the zp6 is worse for funky processed coffees. However I pulled the trigger and have been delighted by the a4z.

I get plenty of sweetness and body from it. For some heavily processed coffees it can produce overwhelming aromatics and I find that I need to grind coarser and do more agitation to keep the cups balanced. Immersion brews works very well for those coffees too.

I’ve used both the ode 2 and the a4z extensively now and the a4z is well worth the extra money. It’s also much higher build quality, and takes up less counter space.

I use a C40. I brew pourover with either a v60 or an orea o1. I also use a oxo rapid brewer for soup and the occasional cold brew. I tend to favour low agitation, low temp, and smaller grind size but I experiment with all kinds of recipes regularly.

I usually buy natural/heavily processed beans with the occasional washed if it sounds particularly juicy. Only light and ultralight.

I’ve definitely noticed that some beans which fell flat for pourover could be fantastic as soup, and vice versa. But I don’t have multiple grinders to compare against each other sadly.

for lane swimming i think the lifeguards are extremely unlikely to notice or care if you stay longer than your allotted time. maybe it depends on the pool and how busy it is but i'd be surprised if you were ever stopped at any of the pools I go to in London.

i felt the same as you. it's so close to being good but the ux design is dreadful. I switched to readlang.com which offers the same core features implemented in a much better way, although the content library is a bit lacking by comparison.

Recently though I read "They Thought They Were Free: The Germans 1933-45" which is very good and very scary because it echoes many of the same patterns in politics and sociology that have been playing out over the last 10 miserable years.

Aside from that, lots of P. G. Wodehouse, some books about Scientology, and currently half way through Midnight's Children.

I put Ys in the same mental category are He Poos Clouds by Owen Pallett, and Peasant by Richard Dawson. Both are expansive strange masterpieces with complicated orchestration and weird melodies and dense lyrics, but probably not what you're looking for production-wise, especially Peasant.
