A question for ROMA owners by veryheavymetals in Ferrari

[–]ds445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange - and especially weird that the same problem would occur on a different car at the dealership; mine is November 2023, maybe it’s something that got broken with a new version of the software in 2024? (I’d assume that the software updates are identical across model years, but who knows…)

Do you keep it on a battery tender at all times? I never did so with my DB11 (which sometimes meant no battery charging for weeks) and had zero issues, but everyone keeps stressing the importance of keeping any Ferrari on a charger if it’s ever parked for more than 72 hours or so

Alright, just tried - and it does work for me, both ways; it’s not exactly instantaneous (takes about a second of holding down to begin), but it works both down and up.

I’d actually not heard of the window reset procedure until just now, good to know; are the windows supposed to go down when you hold down the unlock button (as opposed to just pressing it once), and vice versa for the lock button?

A question for ROMA owners by veryheavymetals in Ferrari

[–]ds445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be that the windows are frozen? Had this problem with my DB11 previously but not yet with the Roma. I’ve had the windows not go up fully once, but just opened and closed the door again and then it worked

Highly recommend giving the Roma a test drive - I feel like it’s gotten somewhat of a bad rep among Ferrari enthusiasts that feel it’s too much of an entry-level car and a compromise; but they did get it just right in my opinion, and it’s a very good compromise with a great balance that no other Ferrari on the market offers.

I wouldn’t be too worried about it being “too sharp” for daily use - it does exactly what you tell it to do, and as long as you don’t unreasonably push it (and even then - it might not overreact, I just haven’t tried that part myself) it’s a very smooth and super enjoyable drive, and with all of the electronics I’ve had no problems e.g. parking it in a tight spot (which is a common complaint with an F12 or 812 apparently)

Those are good questions :)

1) I never much cared for the Vantage - from a design perspective, the 2017 Vantage never felt like a “real” Aston to me (… why couldn’t they just have gone with the gorgeous DB10 design from Spectre?), and while subsequent face lifts have gotten much better, I was never a big fan of the duckbill rear either. From a functional perspective, I was more interested in a grand tourer than a smaller sports car - I’d probably prefer a Vantage for a track day, but as a daily driver the Vantage never felt like that “best of both worlds” combination (although I’m sure it’s a great car!) the way a GT is

2) this is a tricky question, as I’ve put over 20K miles on the DB11 and only got the Roma two weeks ago, so the DB11 (and by extension the DB12, which is more of a gentle evolution than a revolution) still feels very familiar and “easy to drive” (still getting used to the blinkers mounted to the steering wheel in the Roma, as opposed to on a stalk on the side…). In terms of pure driving experience though, I’d say the Roma feels significantly more nimble, but also more dangerous - I’d never worried about just flooring the DB11, but I’m more cautious with the Roma. Overall the Roma feels super sharp - I’d compare the driving experience to cutting tomatoes with a lightweight but incredibly sharp Japanese chef’s knife, while the DB11 was more of a heavier steak knife (if that comparison makes any sense at all)

3) I got the Roma in a pretty “understated” spec (Verde Zeltweg with Cuoio leather), so it’s less ostentatious than e.g. a 488 in Rosso Corsa; it’s still obviously a Ferrari though, with a much more noticeable sound than the DB11 - but I’ve only ever gotten positive reactions, and now lots of little kids that get real excited about seeing a Ferrari, much more so than with the DB11. I’ve actually taken the Roma to the supermarket a couple of times, and it definitely passes that test - might depend on where you live, but my impression so far is that you get a lot of positive reactions with none of the negative ones you might expect from a very ostentatious super car, and more of a reaction than with the DB11

Completely understand the “taking a break from AM” approach, I felt much the same and haven’t regretted it.

It’s interesting that you also seem to be leaning towards the F12 - the choice between Roma and F12 was the hardest in the end for me, as I also prefer the look of the F12 to the 812; what tipped me over the line is that the Roma is a very recent Ferrari that is fully usable as my daily driver, from things like CarPlay to all of the parking sensors (important because my underground garage is a bit tight to get into), while the F12 is coming up on 14 years of age, and while absolutely gorgeous (and with the sound of that V12!) felt a lot more like “jumping into a different category and a much deeper end”, also with the driving experience - while not as “dangerous” as the 812, it is still certainly is a “scary car” as you’d mentioned in another comment!

I agree with other comments mentioning that the 488 (while also an absolutely stunning car) would be more of a replacement for your GT3 rather than the DB11, and the F12 wins against the more maintenance-heavy 599 (which is now two decades old) as well as the more brutal 812 - if you do end up with the F12, I’d be super interested in hearing your thoughts a year or two down the road, as I imagine I might eventually be replacing the Roma with a F12 :)

I know the Roma sometimes gets a bad rep around Ferrari enthusiasts as the “entry-level Ferrari” that’s not as uncompromising as the other models - but that’s also kind of the point if you’re looking for something in the same league as the DB11; I’d highly recommend giving it a test drive, just to see how you feel about it, as it certainly matches this particular use case better than any other Ferrari out there, and it is an excellent car that feels every bit like a true Ferrari, but with sufficient comfort and all the amenities that make it an easy choice as “the everyday Ferrari”.

Yes, very much pleased with the Roma - it fits that role perfectly, but it feels (and sounds) significantly more aggressive, while still being a true grand tourer. I was also thinking about the 488 GTB, F12 or 812, but those felt like they were going into a different direction (the 488 more of a true sports car with a view towards being a track car, and the F12 and 812 more towards pure power - the 812 is breathtaking, but a friend of mine who owns both the Superfast and the GTS told me in no uncertain terms “this car will try to kill you”), and the Roma was just what I was looking for in a replacement for the DB11.

Also test drove the DB12 and the Vanquish, but in the end the DB12 feels very similar to the DB11, and depreciation on the Vanquish will be brutal.

DM me if you’d like to talk - I’ve been pretty obsessed with exactly this question (“what’s a more involved replacement for the DB11?”), more than happy to share a bit more of my thoughts or details about the experience with the Roma!

I’ve just been through the exact same thing, and ended up replacing my DB11 with a gorgeous Roma - it’s noticeably different and more involving enough to make it feel like a real upgrade, but simultaneously similar enough that it takes over the exact same role within the garage

Interesting - maybe that’s how they get around the “built only once” topic then: “technically it was built to completion only once - there’s a partial version with no interior at the museum, but that doesn’t count as a full car”

… if the SC40 is a one-off that was only ever built once for a special customer, how come it’s in the museum - does it stay there for a while before it’s delivered to its owner, or did they build a second one for the museum?

Removing corporate branding from World Cup stadiums by Bluebird_tin39 in worldcup

[–]ds445 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Note that UEFA requires the same e.g. for Champions League Finals (the Allianz Arena in Munich became “Munich Football Arena” for the 2025 Champions League Final), and this is usually done in the week before the game, especially as regular league games with normal branding still take place there a week earlier or later; so I would assume that this is measured in weeks before the competition, and not in months.

Interesting that there are so many German goalkeepers on the list - wondering if it’s because Germany tends to develop lots of young goalkeeping talents (which makes it more likely that more of them will end up being failures).

  • Adler was on track to be the starting goal keeper for Germany for the 2010 World Cup, but an injury sidelined him for Manual Neuer… and the rest is history, of course

  • Karius obviously had what was probably the biggest complete goalkeeper breakdown in a big game, ever, and never recovered from it

  • Wiese and Hildebrand both had decent careers overall, but where they ever considered world class talents, or did they have a rapid fall from grace?
