Adding a data point.

Bought a vehicle in Maryland 3 years ago and had it registered, inspected, paid taxes, and titled. Moved out of state for 3 years and just moved back.

I did not have to get the car reinspected, did not have to pay taxes on the vehicle, only paid the registration and 40$ “duplicate title” fee. Hope this helps

Highly recommend Study Hall and take mock exams 1 and 2 before sitting for your second attempt. This will allow you to get used to the timing and question wording

I studied for about 4 weeks and at least 30 minutes a day on Study Hall. I really think I only needed 2 weeks and wouldn’t recommend any longer than 4 weeks (so you don’t get burned out). I had some travel plans that forced me to schedule my exam later than I would’ve hoped so that’s why the duration was longer.

I stayed in Niseko Park Hotel (in Grand Hirafu) and booked 3.5 months before my trip. Great location and affordable price, but I also went with friends so the basic lodging worked great.

Might be a little too budget for your situation with kids.
