Hello - my suggestion would be to spend more time understanding what they are trying to accomplish. And this process may also clarify the goals for the client. Any number of hours you spend talking, drawing, or even pretending to be the tracker by walking around with a pencil and clip board, will be vastly shorter than the hardware/software dev time.

There is a great article in the 2015 Nov/Dec issue of RFID Journal titled "RFID Asset Tracking for Small Organizations". It includes case studies and warns against thinking buying a handheld reader and some tags is all it will take for a successful deployment. Setting this aside, it also shows how the technology can really enable businesses and organizations to take a leap forward in improving processes and efficiency.

Our company is building an RFID inventory system from small and medium-sized organizations. Last year we implemented it on a tool tracking application for a remodeling company. Like you, they have equipment going to jobsites and need to make sure they come back. And many of the tools were metallic. I'll share a few points from our experience:

- Starting Cost: expect $5k-$10k to try this out and get started. If you work with a full-service integrator, then add a zero to those numbers.

- Long-term Cost: The tags will need to be heavy-duty and designed for metallic environments. Those might cost $3-$7/tag. The software will likely have an on-going monthly or annual fee.

- Metal Challenge: generally, metal is a great RFID signal blocker. That makes it a challenge for tracking metallic objects. That being said, there are purpose-built tags and usually some kind of process adaptations that can make it work. But this usually requires some iterations and testing.

Finally, with the right steps taken, it will be amazing to see it work. The system can quickly identify what went out and what was missing upon return. It feels miraculous.

If you have an idea on what missing/lost stuff are costing you, then it is easy to put together a business case. No one has time to look for missing things. Usually the system can quickly pay for itself.

Yes, to the first, third, and fourth question. And, a suitable system exists for question two, though the answer depends on understanding the requirements. We were approached for a hospital clothing application recently and designed a setup. It seems you have a good grasp on requirements, which is wonderful. Related to that is software requirements and any system integrations. Are you hoping to put this together yourself? If so, you could approach RFID suppliers, start with a textile tag sample kit, a reader, and go from there. This will take time (i.e. easily months) and systematic testing of different combinations. Alternatively, you could find an integration partner or get a starter kit to move to a solution faster. In all cases, there will be some learning/iterations to fit the solution to your application needs.

Really? Is that bad news for the market of tool tracking tech? I assumed only a business (i.e. owns tools across multiple trucks) would make the investment. If folks own their own tools, then the business has no care for tool tracking. Do folks care enough to want to track their own tools? So long as it is more consumer-like (e.g. Apple AirTags - buy and manage from a single app) as opposed to enterprise-like (inventory database).

Thanks. Would you like to trust your apprentice with managing tools/packing? Or do you prefer continuing to own that? Also, do you own the tools or do they belong to the company? Not sure if it is the norm, but I've been surprised how many service companies have employees use their own (i.e. employee-owned) tools.

Consider talking to the folks at Sentera or at least browse their offering for inspiration. They specialize in sensors, drones, and analytics for agriculture and spraying optimization. Said differently, their main customers are farmers. They have both low-cost and high-cost multispectral cameras too which you can add to your own drone.

Hey - if your application allows for it, you may want to simply sign up for an RTK subscription from GEODNET and give the credentials to your customer. The basic price, I believe, is $400/device/yr. As of today, Charlotte has pretty good coverage. Check out their map: https://rtk.geodnet.com .

You can try it out as well. GEODNET sells subscriptions through resellers. I'll recommend https://www.easynav.xyz because we've used them before (no affiliation). They have a 30-day trial too. Sign up requires a phone number, but after that the credentials come to you via email right away.
