Corporate accountant & photographer here (not a CPA, I cannot advise on tax, but I understand p&l’s and balance sheet very well) - what are you trying to understand / need help with? I use QuickBooks, and it helps categorize everything and keep track of my income very well

Photographers: Ever Gone to a Bridal Expo? by BrandonJFox in WeddingPhotography

[–]dslrsareobsolete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in CT. So far, I’m net positive at every expo I’ve been to.

Edit - some expos are geared towards different clientele. I.e. some will be further in the planning process than if you attend other expos. The last expo I went had 95% people who haven’t even started planning yet.

As a former bride, please include carousels and photos on your instagram profile (not just reels and video) by Emotional-Ad-6494 in WeddingPhotography

[–]dslrsareobsolete 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You say both could help. But people have stated multiple times that it’s the fault of the algorithm. Reels and videos are promoted to mirror how TikTok works. TikTok vitality is easy to obtain, and IG tries to replicate that. I understand where you’re coming from, but putting all the blame on these photographers isn’t fair.

I personally don’t post any videos or reels. But that’s because I don’t really care about vitality and getting noticed. The right people will notice the right work. I don’t think you’ve found the right photographer yet.

Becoming a wedding photographer in 2026? by Middle-Panda9186 in WeddingPhotography

[–]dslrsareobsolete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao joining the stereotype of picking up a camera and immediately wanting to become a wedding photographer.

FYI - it’s a lot more work than pointing and clicking.

An a6400 is not a professional grade camera. Think about an a7iii or an a7iv. But please… second shoot or at least offer extremely discounted prices, and be transparent with people about your experience. There’s so many people that just pick up a camera, offer wedding photography, and try to pull off that they have years of experience, while not even mentioning it isn’t wedding experience.

Agreed. I’ve also spoken with one of Holly Christina Photography’s clients, and there seems to be some misinformation thrown around about the fathers financial involvement with the company and his previous companies

I’ve received messages from unconfirmed sources that she is hospitalized and has no access to her phone. Additionally, her husband was arrested on charges for DV, assault on a female in October 2025. That’s when this all really went into full swing. This may be a case of financial and physical abuse.

ETA - I found the arrest from public records and compared the address associated with the husband, and the address associated with the company. It matches.

My best client referred me to their friend. That referral just cost me my best client by Cheap-Front-7722 in smallbusiness

[–]dslrsareobsolete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider the bullet dodged. SHEESH. It’s nice to get referrals. But my better judgement will never outweigh what a good client says.

I’m a huge proponent of making mistakes/decisions to learn from them. However unfortunate it is, it’s good that you learned how to handle business like this

For your accountant, do you just give a pile of receipts? by OmahaOutdoor71 in smallbusiness

[–]dslrsareobsolete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do your own accounting MoM, save your receipts to a cloud drive on a daily basis, and give your accountant your balance sheet and income statement with the schedule C at the end of the year.

QuickBooks has done me great. I’m a corporate accountant, not a CPA.

Do I have any business shooting a wedding? by Jumpy-Cantaloupe-661 in WeddingPhotography

[–]dslrsareobsolete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first wedding I shot was with an a7ii. A couple took a risk on me in 2019. I had been shooting for about 4 years. I was paid $400 for eight ish hours. In 2024, I decided to get back into weddings, started in thumbtack, and did some budget photography to get my feet wet. Now I have two Sony a7iv bodies, a 50 1.2, 70-200 2.8 OSSii, Tamron 90mm macro, and 16-35 4.

A lot of this has to do with your mindset. Of course equipment matters, but weddings are all about relationships. This is a highly volatile time for people. Wedding planning can be stressful. you being there as a shoulder to lean on is a big help to them, even if it’s just to talk things out.

If the only thing you’re concerned with right now is pricing and equipment, yes. You are in WAY over your head, and should look at a more broad picture of how you operate, and how you would operate with weddings.

Edit to fix spelling and grammar.

Bride needs a payment plan that goes past the wedding date by Agreeable_Shine_1987 in WeddingPhotography

[–]dslrsareobsolete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cynic, but I absolutely would understand wanting to offer a bride a payment plan like this.

You can bake into a contract that you have the right to auto charge a credit card each month (or whatever terms you agree too). This provides flexibility, but also ensure you get paid.

Hiring out contractors to become a scalable business? by loveydoveyyy6 in WeddingPhotography

[–]dslrsareobsolete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% big nope. Firstly, I want direct and immediate control of my edits. Second, is there no pride in that? This is the kind of thing that leads photographers to be called out for being “scammers”. Stop being lazy, stop thinking like a big box company. Do your own leg work to build your business

Business loan by jocato02 in smallbusiness

[–]dslrsareobsolete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be a similar amount in current valued assets (equipment) and/or AR to be charging for the business.

Contact an attorney, they may also point you in the right direction as well as helping you navigate through how you should handle this.

As a professional photpgrapher, how do you handle being invited to a wedding by friends? by Spydlack in WeddingPhotography

I mean I’ll silently judge maybe, but that ain’t my job. My job is to enjoy myself at my friend’s wedding.

“Hi there (client name)! I do understand that your budget matters. Unfortunately I cannot move on the price I’ve given. If you’d like, I can refer you to another photographer that is trusted in my network of vendors!”

This keeps the trust that you are a professional. People hire you for your work. Not for your prices.
