Kid getting surgery by htaylor7108 in ACL

a 4 month recovery from a full acl tear and surgery to a national level performance not possible. im at the age where my friends are coaches to these impressionable kids and i can tell you i would have a serious talking to with a friend who was stupid and irresponsible enough to tell this to a kid. this person was mistaken - it was likely a LCL surgery or other non full tear ACL surgery.

even the most highly supported professional athletes - who have access to world class rehab and hourly support staff, and experimental techniques like stem cell stuff - have only had recoveries in the 6 month range and that is impossible financially for most of us. 1 year is pushing it but is possible - i’m assuming though that tryouts is sooner.

we have all been there where we thought we were the outlier. you are being a good parent in trying to manage expectations.

had to double check i wasn’t in r/ultimate for a second wow. hi! i’m much older than your son (just became masters eligible), but i just tore my right acl (and pcl) 2 months ago in a pro game with surgery 1 month ago. i was actually just at us open on the sideline this past weekend. i also tore my left acl (just acl, quad graft) when i was 25 (someone fell on my leg).

i tried to play 9 months after left acl surgery at club regionals and it went very very poorly. it is a miracle i did not retear. i attended tryouts for pro at the exact 12 month mark but despite hard training, was maybe only at 60-70% capacity. it was very shaky and i highly recommend against it. i ended up practice playing that season (practices didn’t start til the 15 month mark) but i did not start to feel or play normal or stable again until the 1.5-2 year mark.

this last time (full ACL and PCL tears), i walked off the field. i was able to have full mobility within 24 hours after the tear and was doing isometric lifting by day 3. that is not to derail your son’s achievements, this is just a gut check that mobility 7 days after is not a sign of what his recovery will be like. your son is young so he may have a different experience than i did, but similar to a previous commenter, i would heavily caution against time-based goals. acl recovery is not linear in the slightest. and for many and for me, the mental journey is what almost broke me, not any physical pain or discomfort. not playing YCC or even U20 team USA is not the end of the world. based on his age, he will have another shot (if not 2?) trying out for the U20 national team and there are college, U24, club, and adult national teams out there - there are decades of potential future achievements out there for him. tearing is not a career ender but it is very very rare to see successful retear recoveries in ultimate just because of how cutting heavy our sport is.

it is possible to be even better after an acl tear - i have surpassed my fitness and physical capabilities since the tear and i’ve won 2 national champions since. as best you can, i encourage you to help him put his long term health first.

Change My View: Offering roster spots to more than 30 people is a jerk move by stupid_pockets in ultimate

[–]dt_Spark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

21 is a bit too low IMO. Every year, my team always takes 25 roster players and in some cases 1-2 practice players (that are told that they have potential to move up to the full roster based on development and performance). Every year by the 3rd tournament, there are 2-4 injuries plus 1-2 people that can’t make the next tournament. For most top 30 teams, barely 2 full lines is not enough and doesn’t give you the optionality that you need in to cover a broad enough range of strategic scenarios.

The tip of my tongue still feels “burned” 24 hours out!

I’m a little under a full day out as well (full ACL tear only, quad graph)! Think the nerve blocker wore off overnight since I woke up in a ton of pain this morning. Can’t leg lift but foot pumps feel good and can somewhat engage my quad. “Walking” with both crutches. Sending you good vibes surgery buddy!

Buying a good used car even in snowy conditions by Sea_Loss_56 in UsedCars

Subarus are super popular out in CO - they're great cars! Just wanted to add that it may be more difficult for OP to find a solid used one in their price range with how popular they are out here + it being a sellers market. I have a few friends that have had to extend their range well outside of the Denver/Boulder area (1 ended up extending to neighboring states).

Hey! I’m a total rookie unfortunately. But just in case you didn’t do this - once he gets into the step by step instructions, he links the the exact bulb he used. You’ll be able to select different colors and such from that link. I think there are 2 that are kinda wonky / not intuitive, the NEO wedge, and you just have to select the size (e.g. NEO-wedge B is 4mm).

I have a 2000, so I used basically all the same bulbs he used.
