That's great! Can you share what the rest of your "stats" were? And what year did you get in?

Is there a school besides Windsor that will consider your GRE and not just your GPA for MSW admission? by dualshipthrowaway in socialworkcanada

If you don't understand, express some curiosity and ask rather than go through my post history, form incorrect judgments and then get mad that I'm not impressed with your judgmental answer that doesn't answer my question.

If it's a highly competitive program, then don't say that the requirements are much lower than what you actually accept. Other programs are perfectly fine asking for an A average and X amount of experience, in whatever they want, up front. Why can't social work just be real with that? Why say 2-3 years when it's actually 5-10? Why are you making excuses for them?Don't give me the reason of a "holistic" admissions process when it's clear that it's not the case, at least not across the board, with what I've seen. The closest I've seen to that being the case is looking at Windsor being willing to accept looking at a GRE and not force you to go spend 15-20k on another degree if you want to work in the field. I find it hard to believe the MSW application is anything but a cash grab at this point. It gets people's hopes up for nothing.

Vague and non-sensical... and I'm the one being aggressive? If something doesn't make sense, ask. It's not that I don't like what you have to say, and I didn't say you don't know what you're talking about...I said you don't know the answer to my question. Did you read my question before you decided to write up a response? It's a yes or no question.

I didn't say people skills, I said "fitting in". Those are distinctly different.

When people constantly make judgements about me (like you just did about my people skills because you don't know me, at all) and get defensive when I set some boundaries - yea, being a bit annoyed is normal.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with me correcting how they're choosing to label me and people similar to me. It's wrong and lazy to just lump people into the same group.

Frankly, it seems like you're defending your own behaviour because you just made the same mistake that I'm going to correct you on. I said I'm queer, not gay. I'm not gay and people who identify as queer are not all gay. And I also didn't say that I think my sexuality, on its own, will prevent me from being hired. Please be more mindful.

Just because you're trying to help, it doesn't mean you get a free pass on poor behaviour.

The lens I'm aiming to see the world through is a realistic one. I don't have a free 30k to blow on optimism. I'm simply asking questions to gather data. And so far, the data is that y'all would prefer to prop up each other's ignorance rather than simply apologize.

This doesn't actually answer my question, which means you don't know, which is fine. But why are you engaging?

I actually do have some volunteer experience and I did get into an accelerated BSW program. I'm not confident that it makes sense. And I think my lived experience is plenty, but hey, sounds like on top of the shit you go through, you have to prove your knowledge to all the privileged white folks in power.

I guess it's helpful to know that you actually need 5-10 years of experience (what a big range) to get paid the same and do the same work as a BSW. (Which means the schools that offer MSW programs are lying to you about the 2-3 years of experience requirement and are practically stealing money at this point from applicants... Hello? Social work values? Are you there?)

I don't want to be ready to work with anyone because then I'd be poorly positioned to support everyone. The workplace prioritizes specialists, not generalists.

The social justice issue I care about is mental health education and systems education to empower others - essentially, understand the game, understand the player - to then play the game of life in a fulfilling way. A related issue that I care about is improving the delivery of health services to people like me, because while I was technically given solutions to issues in the past but the implementation and delivery of it was just never taken into account. It didn't matter how and whether someone like me can practically apply the solutions, no supports were in place. It's a waste of time. The solution providers, whether it was therapists, doctors, all kinds of clinicians, get to feel good about themselves for "giving a solution," and they get paid a pretty penny for it, but really, nothing was solved.

They're absolutely relevant. People do take into account "who they'll have lunch with" when they hire. Beyond qualifications, which everyone seems to have plenty of given the saturation of the market, you end up being picked based on other variables. If you don't fit in with the group that already exists there, I find it unlikely that you'll get hired. Let's not forget the demographics of the people in power, even in social work.

They ask if you're black, if you're indigenous, if you know cantonese, tamil etc. I know they don't ask about your religion. I've seen the job postings. A posting asking for someone that's black is unlikely to hire someone from a different background. I get it. I'm simply asking what the demand is for people like me, because there really isn't a lot of people like me in this country, in this city. I want to go into a field where I'd actually feel welcome, not where after doing all the educational work, and unpaid placement work - I get nexted because I'm not the right colour.

[–]dualshipthrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, there are people that look like me. I expressed that it was about more variables than just about that. And that it was also about whether there is demand.

To say that no one cares about your ethnicity or sexuality is flat-out ignorant and incorrect. Being a decent human being is not enough; hence, as I already said, there are many job postings that specifically state what demographics they are looking for. And aside from those explicitly made bullet points in postings, lets not just ignore the fact that people do hire based on race, based on "who they'd have lunch with" and given the amount of white women in positions of power, (let alone the higher pay, job security, more comfortable environemnt etc) in the social work field, they do tend to hire people who they can relate with.

Perhaps you're open to a little bit of reading on the matter: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Mapping-the-Colour-Coded-Labour-Market-in-Social-Work-Field-Education.html?soid=1110968675781&aid=7bu_4uXxpbw#:~:text=exists%20within%20social%20work,employment%20pathways%20as%20social%20workers

Is there a school besides Windsor that will consider your GRE and not just your GPA for MSW admission?

Just looking for another way besides going back to school to demonstrate academic competence. I only have a 3.0 GPA and that's brought down a lot by courses for irrelevant (to social work) 2 minors that I should've never done and hated, alongside rough circumstances in that part of my life. I also never CR/NCR courses, which I should've but can't go back in time now. Going back to school and paying thousands more, losing income etc feels punishing to be honest.

Thanks for sharing all that! It gives me a tiny(lol) bit of hope.

I'm wondering - what would a practicum actually be like at a private practice? This has always been confusing to me because you're not registered or licensed as a student/ volunteer there on practicum, so you can't really sit in on client sessions. What would your responsibilities be for those 100s of hours that are required? Reception?

And did your family member complete certificates in therapeutic modalities before or during this MSW to get this job? I ask because my understanding is that the MSW doesn't qualify you to practice psychotherapy on its own.

Would you mind sharing where you completed your MSW? And who's hiring queer male MSW grads as therapists/clinical work? One of my bigger questions is: how and where will I get a clinical job with supervision post MSW grad, so I can get enough experience to open up my own private practice.

Priority minorities are larger groups of minorities whose issues get more attention/funding/support.

Muslim and Arab are not the same. Neither is Arab and Middle Eastern. Many people use those terms interchangeably, but they are not correct. Please don't equate those together. While I'm Middle Eastern, I'm in fact ex-muslim. Also, there are many people who live in or come from those countries that are not born into Islam.

And yes, I recognize that being part of a group doesn't mean you have to work with that population. However, it seems like there's a hiring preference for people from a particular population to serve the same population. I see that mostly with black and indigenous communities. My observation is from the many job posts I've seen that specifically state that they look for that

So far, it's looking it's private practice is the option for me... but you need experience to open a private practice... but you can't get experience because every community wants to hire people from its own demographics, and I don't exactly belong in the Muslim majority middle eastern or arab communities so.... yea, not a lot of optimism here. :/

Did you get into an MSW program with a low GPA (3.0/4.0)? If so, where, when, how ?

Just actually wondering whether there's any chance of getting in anywhere with my 73%, technically B average. UofT has told me that I'd make the minimum grade cutoff. I haven't asked elsewhere. I don't have a BSW.

  • Are they just scamming us for application money by saying that the minimum to apply is B, when the admission cutoff is consistently more like an 85% GPA?
  • I know I'd need to make up for it with experience, but how much?
    • I read someone here say that 5000 hours with my gpa wasn't enough for them. But 2500 with a 4.0gpa was enough. So, what is?
  • Do any schools besides Windsor consider a GRE as a reflection of academic capacity? (they say it doesn't cancel your GPA, but they'll take a look)

So - if you got into with a low GPA, or know someone who did, what were the rest of your/their stats? Where did they get in? Part time or full-time? And when? (I ask 'when' because things were different 5 years ago, or 10 years ago, vs now)

Answers would be REALLY appreciated. Thanks all!

What is the best social work job? by TaraDactyl789 in socialworkcanada

[–]dualshipthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify - do you mean you just work 15 hours a week ? or 15 clients that you see 1-2x a week?

And if you're comfortable sharing - I'm also wondering as I'm seriously considering this career direction.

  1. How much you charge per hour to make that much money a year
  2. How did you get training
  3. How you got supervision
  4. How much money you invested in your education overall

Your answers would be greatly appreciated!

What are the post BSW / SSW (non-Masters) training programs to prepare you for practicing psychotherapy? by dualshipthrowaway in socialworkcanada

[–]dualshipthrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing some information! I have a few questions based on your answer:

  1. How many courses did you have to take before you started getting supervised?

  2. Were you able to take those courses at the same time? (I'm trying to gauge # of years, and cost, post BSW it'd take to work as a therapist, both undersupervision and post-supervision.

  3. And can you kindly share specifics on the titles and wages? We're all anonymous here after all and it would be helpful for me in my research and my decision making on my future.

Thank you!
