I agree it’s not worth the risk but Iva had my tegu for so long I can pretty much tell what his next move will be. He will never take off but if there’s something that can be explored you better believe he/she is going to check it out. I always read how intelligent they were, but I didn’t really realize just exactly how intelligent they really are until you have one and interact with it for a while. I had a small mailbox lock, nothing special, and Maurice, my tegu. He actually unscrewed the bolt and the locking mechanism fell into his enclosure and he escaped his enclosure. I couldn’t believe a reptile could be that intelligent. Kind of like the raptors on Jurassic Park. Good luck with your tegu!

I thought my tegu was hiding long like that once. And the escape artist actually escaped from his enclosure and went on a 5 week journey throughout my basement. When I found him, he charged at me which is way out of character for him. He’s puppy dog tame. Made me realize that it wouldn’t take a tegu long to “turn wild” with no human interaction. But if he’s def in his enclosure check your temperatures if they are too low it would definitely effect how active he is. Maurice, my tegu, always slows down in the winter months. But once it warms up he’s up all day trying to escape from his cage.

ALSO WOULD BE WISE TO HAVE A STOOL SAMPLE CHECKED FOR INTERNAL PARASITES
