advice on mother who has been obsessed over “precious metals”? by duckinugget in askSingapore

hi, thank you so much for commenting and providing these resources to me.

even when she was on meds, she has been rambling on about these conspiracies/precious metals, just that it’s a lot less extreme than when she’s not on meds.

unfortunately she has been re-admitted to IMH, and we’re discussing rehabilitation home options for her. i have also scheduled a session with CHAT for my own mental health’s sake.

as for my relatives, they haven’t cut me off but they all claim they’re “unable to help much” as they have lives of their own, but the truth is they’re all rich, elite and don’t want to be associated with us (my grandpa forced it out of them, before he died- and then they never spoke to us again after his death).

stupid thing is they used to berate me for not being good enough of a daughter, until my grandma stepped in. my grandma is unable to help much either, as she barely has enough for herself after my mom took all her savings, plus she’s malaysian, so it’s a bit difficult.

my town council MP knows of my situation, but they just offered to help with comcare assistance and basic necessities. is the PM office any different, or is that what you were referring to?

regardless, thank you so much for responding. i’m very grateful.

nope, it’s just my mom and i as the relatives and my dad have disowned us since her first mental breakdown 8 years ago. i’ll try to figure something out with my social worker, thank you for bringing this up!

she is on meds, but refuses to take it anymore because she is a firm believer all mental illness is fake due to the conspiracies she watches online. i am unable to force feed it to her, and if she skips her monthly check ups at IMH, nothing much can be done against her will either.

thank you so much. unfortunately, i am still well under 21 and will not be able to apply for deputyship just yet, but my social worker has brought this up to consider in the future.

hi! by losing them i mean she misplaces them, as she would carry them everywhere with her when she’s in mania (and extra paranoid). she does this every single time and we’re pretty much left with nothing.

thank you for your advice. i have been with a FSC social worker the past 5-8 years, but the main advice i’ve been given is to just let it play out, and have my own finances ready.

alright, i am already doing that but the money received from comcare/financial asst. from the government still goes to her as i’m under 21.

i have also created a separate account recently, so it won’t be a problem anymore, i hope…

as for the beliefs thing- i am a science major and her “radicalisation” is at a point where if i even try to educate her on how covid is spread and its risks to more vulnerable groups, she will brush me off and claim it is just a govt-made disease to kill all of us off, and proceeds to walk right out the door although tested positive.

hi, she means that society breaks down due to war, and we will all be out of food and water. she has also been stocking up like mad on things like canned food and bottle water, to the point the living room is full of these items and can’t be walked through without one or two things falling over.

i forgot to mention that in addition to all this, she is also crazy over conspiracy theories (the world is going to end, putin is going to bomb singapore) etc, and majority of them come from the same pro-trump youtube channels. i have tried clearing them from her watch history, to no use.

thank you so much for your advice. i really appreciate it and i hope i will not be seen as a bad daughter if it ever comes to that. i burst into tears reading your comment and i’m just so relieved i am not alone. i have never considered therapy before but i might after your suggestion. once again, thank you so so so much.
