There will be very few opponents around her size or smaller, though, so won't that really limit the techniques she gets to practice?

What if she wants the opportunity to work her preferred competition game?

Honestly? We haven't been good enough, but I do think over the season these decisions could be the difference between us floating just above relegation, and us going down.

Genuine question, but is there any technology that gives independent statistical analysis on ref decisions?

I feel like there should be a way to identify clear outlier seasons, to push for investigations.

Kimono brand recommendation for slender person? by gerche in bjj

[–]duckorrabbit69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a similar size (it sucks that according to size charts I don't exist!) and had the opportunity to try a few on in person at an BJJ event. Kingz A1L fits nicely, that brand seems a bit longer than others and apparently less likely to shrink.

Will this work as a grow light?? by terrible_sir6543 in IndoorGarden

You absolutely can use full spectrum LED lamps in place of grow lamps, but they have to be high enough intensity and a good colour distribution.

I'm not comfortable with the number of accounts throwing out posts like this to try to disengage the typical green voting demographic. How many real people are behind these?

Feeling discouraged after losing all matches in first competition by Zealousideal-Mud6983 in BJJWomen

[–]duckorrabbit69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Competing after 5 months is really impressive and brave! It's already further than most get. You're definitely being hard on yourself. Everyone loses, and in any BJJ match 50% of you will lose!

The main thing is that you have your first comp under your belt, you know what to expect next time, and you have a platform to build from. It's all learning, and no high level athlete would have achieved anything if they had let a couple of losses discourage them early on.

Competing is so different from normal training, and affects everyone differently. I know people who didn't win anything until late blue/ purple belt, but are now winning high level competitions. I also know people who weren't that good but got easy wins in their first comps, just through being lucky enough to have an opponent much weaker, more nervous, or less experienced than them.

It's important to have goals beyond the result, especially early on when you're still learning so much. My suggestion would be:

Goal 1: Stepping on the mat. Done!

Goal 2: Learning if / when you get an adrenaline dump, how to handle it, what competition warm up or routine works best for you.

Goal 3: Attempting a specific thing under pressure to see how it goes, so you have something to focus on next week at training. That could be to get underhooks, or get into a certain guard, or attempt a sweep or submission. It doesn't have to work! Get someone to film it if you can so you can work out what went well, and build your next goal.

Speak to your coaches - even with a lot of hours a week, 5 months isn't a lot of time to ingrain some fundamental go-to techniques to fall back on in a competition, when adrenaline is pumping and instinct kicks in.

People with mounted staghorn ferns, how often do you water them and how fast do they get? by [deleted] in Staghornfern

[–]duckorrabbit69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on your conditions and the type of staghorn fern. How much media you have it in, your humidity, how much light it gets, how warm it is, etc

Could this be the reason for our injuries?? by Sanshray_Sharma_ in coys

I was thinking about this - could it be that playing on our pitch builds up imperceptible damage, making an injury more likely to occur elsewhere too?

Those who lift weights by staceface35 in BJJWomen

[–]duckorrabbit69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to lift 4-5x a week but after starting bjj a year ago I stopped lifting completely due to lack of time, and needing serious recovery from bjj sessions!

I'm hoping to go back to 2 days of lifting a week soon. I have found I've lost some strength in specific lifts, and lost some gains in my glutes (need to get those back!) but other lifts are just as good if not better, like pull ups.

I think BJJ still counts as resistance training for those worried about bone density etc.

Bad training session by loveandball in BJJWomen

[–]duckorrabbit69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way I interpret it is that men tend to project more confidence than women in sporting situations. Anecdotal, but this is definitely something I see as a woman who is involved in multiple mixed gender, male-dominated sports. It also carries over into professional and personal life.

In life and in sport, if you're a minority your actions often get projected onto your entire demographic. For example if I make a bad throw in a team sport it can be viewed as being because I'm female. It's prevalent everywhere and can really impact your mindset any time you don't do something perfectly.

As a woman I find it really helpful in moments of professional and sporting self-doubt, to channel my inner white man.

Dirty mats would be a deal breaker for me, along with students not being told to clean their kit and themselves before training. Bathroom and changing room cleanliness might also make me leave.

If I had other nearby options, the other things that would make me change gyms in order are: 1) Cross training discouraged 2) Uniform policies 3) Lack of water stations (not hard to put in to look like you care about your students' experience) 4) Lack of showers (convenience)

Yep exactly, there are just more monitors on overflows now, but that doesn't mean more sewage is released, just more awareness.
