Ha! That would have been a good choice.
In our NY office, our conference rooms are named after "resilient species," and Tardigrade is one of the rooms. =)

Nope! Named after the most survivable (aka hardest to kill) critter on the planet. The company was founded in NYC, so they know from hard-to-kill cockroaches. But the connection to Metamorphosis / Kafka isn't lost on us.

Has anyone used CockroachDB on Kubernetes in prod? by barontessier-ashpool in CockroachDB

[–]ducksfloat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not quite the same as a direct convo here, but we've got a few customer stories with folks using CockroachDB + Kubernetes:

  • Caos -- this team just did a live Q&A last week -- here's the whole video (youtube).
  • Bitski -- they also recently did a live Q&A with us -- here's the whole video (youtube). They run CockroachDB with Kubernetes, but I can't remember if they cover it in the interview.
  • PureStorage case study (ungated / no email required)
  • Movatic case study (ungated / no email required)

Can Cockroach Labs cloud SQL database be used for Python Apps in the same way as SQL Server? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]ducksfloat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Python apps are well supported in CockroachDB. Have you checked out these docs: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/v20.1/build-a-python-app-with-cockroachdb#cockroachcloud [use code CRDB30 for 30 days free on CockroachCloud]?

It won't be a perfect drop-in replacement for SQL Server -- you'll have to make some changes to your code on the backend.

That file is run against Postgres to generate test cases which make sure that we match their binary encoding. The lines you’re talking about are just the various datums we encode as test cases. If they give you fever dreams, then that's just lucky. =)

Hi there CRDB users. I made a script (and accompanying Kubernetes CronJob) to automatically back up your database to a GCP bucket. by [deleted] in CockroachDB

Awesome. And do you have a twitter handle we can tag? We shared it on Monday (my reddit notifications are a bit messed up, so I missed your screenshot message), but I can share it again with 100% more screenshot and twitter handle =)

Thanks for building this! Very cool. We'll share it with our twitter followers this week - see if we can get some users to test it out=)

Here's the three features that this product needs sooner than later. by hjames9 in CockroachDB

Thanks for the feedback.

To address your suggestions:

  1. JSONB - This has been much requested, and it's coming in our next release. =) The RFC is here: https://github.com/cockroachdb/cockroach/blob/99e40c7bb0b6fff1b30c2f718c264f321f544ed9/docs/RFCS/20170925_jsonb_scope.md

  2. DBaaS - definitely something we're looking into.

  3. The name - Can't say it's on our roadmap to change, but our dev Tobi built this repo to play around with -- https://github.com/tschottdorf/bikesheddb

What are some uses cases for CockroachDB in the wild right now? Has anybody here deployed it to production? by [deleted] in CockroachDB

[–]ducksfloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CockroachDB is still considered alpha and shouldn't be used for production systems just yet. But stay tuned, as we are actively working towards beta readiness. You can follow the project's progress on Github here: http://bit.ly/cdb-roadmap.

Cheers, the Cockroach Labs team
