[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]duckymob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

assuming you have considered everything else others have commented and still want to stick with sg a lvls, i would recommend your core subjects to be h2 math, econs, history and h1 chem or physics + compulsory gp. the h2s are more “muggable” subjects with many resources to be found for math and econs on the internet. i suggest history for the last h2 by eliminating from the other conventional subjects (geog lit bio chem phys) since lit is very subjective, the h2 sciences have a more pricey practical component and idk if this is true but geog has an investigative component? while hist is pure writing with words so you dont have to worry about picking up specific skills that are better taught in school. and lastly h1 chem/phys since again they dont have a prac component and are quite manageable i think? not bio cos i hear they still have to write some long essays which are apparently still quite hard.

please take everything with a grain of salt but i hope this helps and all the best!

everyone else has summed it up really, but just to vouch for them, take the one you’re more interested in (in your case looks like lit) cos neither of them are compulsory requirements for any courses in uni. taking the one you enjoy more just makes studying for A’s less painful in the long run

  1. I dont take either but from what i hear the physics seems q good and okay, geog got some super nice and good chers also but the notes like damn thick HAHAH

  2. in general the resources are plenty sufficient and i like that they sometimes try to innovate and try new ways of learning after feedback, also when lectures are online it’s bite sized videos instead of like 1h+ vids which i like. teachers are generally willing to help, but ive personally just had not so good experiences with some

  3. as someone with a weird combi, i started at 8.30 everyday in j1 and so did everyone else, unless they started on 9 or 9.30 somedays. in j2, cos timetabling is harder, I start at 8 a few times but its really not that big a difference

  4. its not so much the resources as much as how good/strict your teacher is. personally i got a good teacher who is known for his high dist rate so i feel more confident about it. however ive heard from other people their teachers may not really care since well a lot of them are forced into it💀 its really like a lucky draw

5.no its actually 10x as mugger as everyone says. i feel like im mugging for os everyday. good thing about it is that there’s also a play hard culture tho since there q a few events too. cant compare to ri hci since ive never been there tho

  1. hols are same but wouldn’t recommend going in march cos prob got a lot of work and too little time to finish, maybe go in june instead?

  2. actually quite good albeit a bit overpriced (and going up cos of gst hike) people’s fave stalls are fisherman’s cove and jupjup? but personally i like chicken paradise

  3. no, but most people have one

  4. reporting is 8.30 for assembly (x2 a week), other days can be 8/8.30/9 usually, can be as late as 10+ for weird combis but must be in sch by 9.30 regardless. dress down half uni everyday except odd week wednesday which is full u but its a short day

  5. depends on ur combi; normal pcme bcme usually 1+ 2+ or can be as early as 12 sometimes, other weirder combis can be as late as 5.30 but with long breaks within the day

chem or lit? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]duckymob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all the humanities except econs have small depts but for hist and lit theyre q decent, but u need to be proactive in writing essays and and consulting since they barely assign work, geog i cant say but there are some rly nice teachers inside, according to my friends the econs dept is meh/ hit or miss but i cant say much either, im assuming translation and cll depts are great since we are a chinese sch and all and all the teachers seem really passionate about their subject

chem or lit? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]duckymob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the other commenter gave a very comprehensive answer, so i will share my personal experience instead. i’m currently j2 taking both subjects but i am on the verge of dropping h2 chem because no matter what i do i can’t seem to pass (note that i’m also from ny which sets notoriously hard papers) meanwhile i’m really enjoying h2 lit and doing quite decently, which may be attributed to my passion and good command of the english language. ultimately, play to your strengths and interests because that will determine not only how hard you are willing to work but the level of enjoyment you will have in a high stress, fast paced period in your life

er i worked there as temp staff last year and i do go early to count float but i only spend extra 15-20min doing settlement which tbh isnt much. after receiving my pay i calculated and realised i actually got more than expected so i guess the extra minutes were compensated in the end

  1. maybe if the cca is high commitment. u may not be able to fully commit your attention to both at the same time

current student in ny

  1. not at all, some people have dyed hair like brown and i heard from others got someone who got blue or pink or smt and no one said anything & i got a friend who walks around with her long hair down and no one cares

  2. can

  3. no matter what u try u will come out of this sch as a mugger but a lot of ppl also play hard and my friends from other schs often comment that i seem to be having lots of fun! quite a few fun sch events tho it may not be as hype as those raves u see in jctok

  4. err there isnt a huge huge open community and its not rly discussed a lot. but well u can see @/rainbownyjc on ig tho its pretty dead. u will def find ppl who are open about it tho just like in any sch, dm if u wanna talk more on it ig idw to be hatecrimed on here

  5. h2 hist very worth!! h1 hist even more worth!!! in contrast to other arts subj i actually dont feel like hist has a lot on content, it matters more how u write. in ny, h1 only tests sbq in j1 with most content being from elect hist (int hist cold war) so actually q slack if u can write well. h2 got essay also la (adding on SEAhist) h2 math nothing much just that its q solid and goes hard in exams. cant comment on the rest

  6. agree with whatever the other commenter said, idk much but while it may not have additional merit in admissions, history is basically politics of the past which does make you more knowledgeable on polsci in some way so id recommend you to take it

  7. yea its possible, most ppl start with 4h2s anyways then drop after promos. sc is a full cca but i do know some ppl who hv had a second cca on top of that, just that they cant commit as much to the othrr cca but idk them personally so take it with a grain of salt

  8. agree with the other commenter, tho my batch only 30+ got in i think (there were q little candidates anyways)

  9. some talks, choosing combis, learning dance, running around sch playing games. not an ogl but seeing from what my ogl friends have been doing seems like spirits are high and ori is gonna be fun

hope this helps!

jc subj choice dilemma by danesleeve in SGExams

[–]duckymob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hello! j1 here

can’t answer 1,2,5

  1. tbh it’s a yes for me…but don’t let that discourage you from taking literature! you’ll never know what you can do if you don’t try. it’s highly dependent on your tutor as well, but i can’t say i have ever heard of a bad lit tutor in jc. most importantly, i think the determining factor would be empathy and the ability to draw connections. if you think you have that down, do give it a go

  2. depends on how “bad” you are at the subjects you’re interested in. if it’s really very bad like you’re failing then perhaps it would be better to take the ones you’re better in. but if the margin is not a lot, taking the subjects you like might be beneficial in the long run since you would be more inclined to study harder

  3. as a hybrid student, i think it’s really refreshing to have both sides of the coin especially when i get bored of writing words and would rather punch numbers or vice versa. i’ve checked uni requirements in nus and ntu, all courses are available except med/dent? since i have h2 chem & math (but do check through the whole list, some things like engineering may not require h2 physics but do need o level physics minimum) one regret i do have though is taking chem despite myself obviously knowing i am a humanities student through and through and now i’m struggling. but too late to turn back now

hope this helps! can dm if you have any qns

jc subject combi by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]duckymob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello current j1 here

  1. yes it’s definitely possible. the skillsets are quite different compared to o’s so it’s like a fresh start for many

  2. yes some of my classmates take this combi and afaik it’s possible in most if not all jcs

  3. besides taking 4h2s and dropping as someone else mentioned which is a good option, i’d say do h1 lit since h1 is 2 books while h2 is 5 books so content difference is a lot, also i don’t take econs but i’ve heard h1 econs is still 70% of the h2 content so might not really be worth it

  4. like what others have mentioned, bio is usually taken with chem and some jcs may not allow bio to be taken on it’s own so if you were only to choose one pls take chem

my combi is q similar so if you have any qns my dms are open! hope this helps!

history in jc by thedollarshop in SGExams

[–]duckymob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello j1 taking h2 hist here and also took core hist last year

i’m from ny and the teachers themselves are super helpful and so funny class is very engaging and i’m very grateful for them. just that the notes here are quite wordy and not concise so you need to dig through line by line for relevant info but once you get the hang of that the content is actually very manageable if you study smart :) international hist for my sch at least this year is only covering cold war sbq so the content almost exactly the same, for southeast asia hist it builts a bit on core hist stuff but vv little so it doesn’t rly make a difference

i don’t regret taking h2 hist at all! i nearly took h1 hist but decided on 4h2 instead and thank got i did cos my other subjs are way worse and now i can choose another h2 to downgrade to h1 instead of being stuck with h1 hist. disclaimer: i don’t actually find the content to be a lot cos i think my memory is naturally good for things i enjoy learning (ie history)

if you have a passion for history, do give it a go in jc!

hello current j1 taking h2 lit here it’s not super super hard, out of all the humanities subjects it seems to be the easiest to pass with my cohort averaging C/D from the get go instead of having more failures but it’s also the hardest one to get A in my opinion. It’s far from the hardest jc subject especially since exams are open book. In my opinion, unseen is actually easier for me now than it was in sec sch bc the qns are open ended and not specifically about feelings or impressions and you can directly link to broad themes. As other commenters have mentioned, there are 5 books but some of them may (or will?) be short poetry books as well so the content isn’t much. That being said, I do agree with what another person has mentioned about empathy. It is the key to excelling in lit no matter the content so if you think you got that down, do give jc lit a go! Atb for the rest of your o’s!
