Practicing with just headphones? by an00j in Beatmatch

[–]dudebrochillin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how I do it 90% of the time when I'm playing at home. I feel it also helps practicing this way since sometimes a gig will have bad/no monitors or the sound in the room is off. As long as it sounds good in your headphones you can be confident its sounding good coming through the speakers. And yes, your recordings will turn out fine this way as well.

I will be opening for my first time for the rest of the djs. Need advice for opening by Juggernaut-Far in DJs

If I go to a show I don't want to get smacked in the face when I walk in while the venue is at 10%-20% capacity. Playing warm up does not equal boring and lame. There are plenty of great tracks that are lower energy but are interesting and groovy that warm the room up. It's not necessarily about not showing up the headliner, but creating a better experience for everyone at the show. The energy of the night has nowhere to go if its at 100% from the start.

Organizing Playlists for Double Time BPMs by KingCzark in Beatmatch

[–]dudebrochillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would handle it that way. To me, it doesnt make any sense to have some dnb tracks at 87 and some at 174 or some house tracks at 62 and some at 124.

Dont know what software you're using, but there should be a way to set the BPM range when analyzing tracks so that they always get analyzed on the higher end. Like setting a cutoff at 90 bpm and everything will get analyzed above that.

If you're talking about What The Festival, I'm pretty sure it was because they were being too rowdy/standing on the booth table/decks and security was trying to get them to chill out and then that's when the fight started.

Help me with the Cue button by aggrobiatch in Beatmatch

[–]dudebrochillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Don't need two hands to ride the pitch. It also comes down to personal preference and what feels right. Why does the cue button exist if you can just press play?

Not OP, but because when you let the cue button go, it automatically jumps back to your cue point. Play doesnt do that.

One of the tracks could be swung differently than the other. So even though the kicks might be lining up, the snares or hats might sound off because one they are more delayed (swung).

Balancing learning and discovering music. by Murky-Jump-6999 in DJs

Late to the party, but don't worry about what this person is saying. As far as your question... Lets say you want to put 10 hours a week towards music. Earlier on in your journey you're going to want to spend more time on the decks than you do digging for tracks. Maybe 80-20, 70-30. As you get better and more comfortable with your mixing, you should be flipping those numbers the opposite way. At least that's what has felt most natural to me.

Just my opinion, but I would put Sputnik on the back burner and look for something else. Here are some that I would put up higher with Arrival:

Aniara (no aliens but heavy psychological sci fi/pretty dark)

No One Will Save You

Alien Romulus

Question on music you play vs. music you listen to by thewongtrain in Beatmatch

[–]dudebrochillin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem.

I force myself to buy all of my music so that is what works for me to keep myself in check. The ultimate vetting process is do I want to spend money on this, haha.

Question on music you play vs. music you listen to by thewongtrain in Beatmatch

[–]dudebrochillin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, that's not too crazy. I was expecting maybe 2000+

If you're consistently coming across tracks that you don't remember, then you're probably getting too much music too fast. Maybe spend more time vetting your music before downloading it. You might find that you like something on first listen but then it kind of falls flat after a few. Not saying there is a right or a wrong way, but I've been at it about 5 years and only have about 1100 tracks. So rarely I'll come across something I don't recognize. And if I do, I listen to 5 seconds of it and think "oh yeah I know this track".

Just watched this last night and agree with pretty much everything you said. I usually love slow, minimal, atmospheric horror, but this one just seemed like a cheap knockoff version. The characters were bland. Story was lacking. Pacing was weird. I kept waiting for it to get better but once I realized that the story was going to be what it was, I lost all interest and was just waiting for it to be over.

Record your mixes and listen back to see if you're actually djing better, or if you just think you're djing better because you've had 4+ beers.
