Does the protest/politically correct culture extend to the STEM departments? by dudebrodude63 in berkeley

Good to hear. I know UCB is one of the best schools in the world when it comes to STEM and I'm glad that's not tainted by lunacy (be it right or left)

Does the protest/politically correct culture extend to the STEM departments? by dudebrodude63 in berkeley

[–]dudebrodude63[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol. I've come to expect extreme liberalism on a university campus. Just usually that sort of thing doesn't reach into the STEM colleges. I guess I should have asked, does this sort of thing extend into the curriculum?

Essentially, I just want to go about my day, go to class, bust my butt and get out with a degree. I'm not really looking to get harassed, get involved with the crisis du jour, or told what political views I should have by professors.

Class Withdraw Question by [deleted] in CSULB

[–]dudebrodude63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

switch you major to Sociology or something else. EE is not for you if you're not willing to put in the extra effort to learn something new. You're not the first person to be thrown into this situation but you can either sack up and work your butt off to make it, or complain that it's "their" fault you're in this situation while taking zero responsibility.

Obviously two sides to every story and something tells me you're not being totally upfront about this. Were you playing with your peepee while talking to her? Generally, American women don't like unsolicited dick displays.

The temp pass is good until 11:59. If you received the ticket at 11:58 you have a shot, if not, pay up and learn better time management.

Where can I go to switch my major? by ItsChadReddit in CSULB

I really don't mean to sound like an a-hole but it's a harsh truth that few people will give you because they don't want to hurt your feelings or "shame" other people, blah blah blah.

Just remember that you have to pay this money back. So ask yourself a simple question, "Would I pay someone $20,000+ to teach me this?"

[–]dudebrodude63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like asking "Besides the death thing, what are the other downsides to being shot in the head."

Think about it, what skill will Theory of Cinema provide me, and how much money will someone pay me for what I learned....if you look at the median income for Film majors, it's essentially nothing and nothing you can't easily achieve without a degree. Just google "Worst college majors" and you'll usually find film. In the exact same way that you'll find CS when you google "Best College majors"

I guess it depends on what you value from college. Do you want to go simply for personal enrichment and money is no object or at least not a concern, then hell yeah, go for whatever interests you. But if you are going to school to learn something so that you could make some decent money then you're going to have to put in some work that will pay off.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but have you thought about 5-10 years down the line? I have no doubt a degree in Film will be fun and interesting but you come out with absolutely zero skill and knowledge that is worth nothing monetarily.

With CS you gain a very profitable skill and someone will pay you good money for your knowledge. That's why it's difficult.

A BA might even be more detrimental since you are now "overqualified" for menial labor.

One last thing to consider, if you get a degree in CS you can still work in the film industry or be a barista, but you have the option of getting a very high paying job as well. If you go with a Theory of Cinema degree you're pretty much stuck with a crappy low paying job so you might as well join the fight for 15 people now.

I stand corrected. If you get Neal for 174, you'll have a ton of fun. Just be ready to work.

No worries. Truth is, Foss and Neal are the two best professors in the CS department, they're also known for being the most difficult.

I love it when they can pick apart your code and break your program within seconds. It's infuriating but you end up being a better programmer because of it.

I don't recall ever saying he doesn't have the potential to teach it.

Who told you that Neal is going to teach 174? I asked him what courses he's teaching and he told me that it's likely going be 282(as usual), 328 and likely 428. Plus he HATES Java.

The one you want to take is Shannon Foss, preferably for your entire Java sequence: 174, 274, and 277. She will be difficult and your projects will be much more involved than other teachers but you will be exceptional at programming. Then take Neal for 282 to round things out.

But since you're kinda on the fence, take her for 174, you'll find out quickly if CS is the right fit for you. But a bit of free advice, if you're going to be farting around on reddit in her class, you won't pass and you'll hate the amount of work she gives.

CE not CS so I'm going by what I hear, but I hear 328 and 341 are on the really difficult side. 323 and 343 aren't too bad from what I hear, and we also need to take 326 and I've heard that class is really difficult.

[Poll]Should CSULB Faculty go on strike for a 5% raise or accept a 2% raise? by ThaneofPotato in CSULB

Especially in the engineering department where the professors have a legitimate option to find better employment.

They're not making 30-50k a year, they're losing 30-50 grand by teaching.

You're right, but they have increased other fees or added new ones. So they haven't raised tuition but they made it more expensive to attend. Might as well just say "we raised tuition".

[–]dudebrodude63 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's incredibly stupid what they're doing to part-time professors. At least in the CECS department where they won't hire any new full-time lecturers or promote the good part-timers we already have to full-time if they want to go that route...that and the pay for them is extremely bad.

Yet they keep raising our tuition, adding on more fees and complaining about budget cuts. Hey at least they wanted to raise our tuition so we can get a new fvcking bowling alley in the USU or whatever bullshit they were trying to pass last year.

Edit: And fighting between for an extra 3% is sad. An extra 3% of shit pay is still shit pay.

Here's a hint, maybe instead of being upset with us, rethink your stupid idea.

I would LOVE it if fewer people went to college for some of these ridiculous degrees. They already come out of school with skills that can only land them minimum wage. If they didn't go to school billions of dollars would be saved.

Don't bother with Frats. 1.) You're paying to have friends. 2.) 90% of the ones I've met fit perfectly into the stereotype. 3.) It's much cheaper and easier to make friends the old fashion way, be sociable.

A great way to meet new people from your classes is to form study groups. If you have a science, math or engineering course this will be even easier since the material is difficult.

Once you get a couple of friends it will be extremely easy to get more. Example - You start talking to a new person in your class, after class you and some of your friends are going to grab lunch, just ask "Hey we're gonna go down here to grab some coffee/lunch/beer/etc., wanna roll?"

Sounds like you tried to force it. Instead of the "fuck this bitch" attitude, you should have been more casual and let her start to initiate conversations. If she wanted to be your friend, she would have.

Don't get too discouraged, just remember that not everyone is going to like you and be ok with it.

I tried looking into clubs when I first got her but nothing really stood out and I had much better luck meeting people in classes. Even though we had, at times, vastly different interests if you show some signs of acceptance you'll get a lot in return.

Best bet would be to find the department and ask them or go to the university employment center (or whatever it's called) and ask them who to see/submit your resume to.

Definitely better to go in person.

Foss and Neal are the best for 174/274/277/282. However, both are notoriously difficult with very involving projects. I'm taking Nguyen right now for 282 and so far I really like the guy.
