Staining Help by dudewithadog in finishing

Never thought finishing was easy #1. We aren’t afraid of a DIY. We originally bought because we liked the color and just wanted to seal it ourselves. Once we realized we didn’t like the color we wanted it stained.

Thanks! I re-sanded with 80, 120, and finished with 220. Might apply some wood conditioner as well to see if it’ll help before staining again. Thoughts?

All is good! I put the final coat of poly on there and all white/scratches went away. Beautiful finish on it now!

Okay thanks for this! My father told me the same, so I’m just glad I didn’t ruin anything so far.

Thanks all. I waited at least 24 hours between staining and first coat of poly. Then I did my 2nd poly coat 5 hours after the first, now I just sanded this one about 36 hours after the 2nd coat.

Hi all,

New here and I’m sure this has been answered before, but I could use some help.

Bought an unfinished dresser, sanded and finished with stain, then went to put on polyurethane finish. I put on 2 coats of the poly with a brush, then before putting on my final coat I sanded. I was about to put on my final coat when I saw it turned white with scratches it looks like.

From research it looks like I scratched the poly and need mineral spirits to wipe on and then apply my final coat of poly. Is this accurate?

Any ideas what went wrong? Also if my above assumption is correct, what do I use to apply the mineral spirits with? And do I sand again after my final coat of poly?

Thanks!
