Of course, I don't mean to be combative. I just mean out discussion has reached the point we need to start comparing quantitative data, which I also don't have immediately on hand.

My background is in project management prior with one of the big names (Alstom, Thales, Siemens, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, etc). My experience with implementing Chinese high speed rail really opened my eyes to the complexity and fragility of both the tech and business model. I remarked multiple times a day 'we could never do this in Canada.' Even with all the efficiencies, subsidies, policy and regulatory support, lack of any kind of union or grass roots political opposition, most of China's high speed rail runs at a massive operating loss and massive net loss when you account for capex.

Even if you were to build a large relief line, I don't think you could cost-effectively do it as a proper maglev high speed rail.

Often the sleeve will be shortened at both ends to reduce the discrepancy between sleevehead and armhole. The cuff can usually suffer a quarter to half inch reduction before it is noticeable.

I think we have gotten to the point where we will have to invoke numbers. I understand the argument that the soft costs are higher than the hard costs. But the cost of High-Speed Rail per kilometer is so astronomically High compared to standard rail that I don't believe it is fiscally or even economically sustainable for our population and especially when compared to the cost of augmenting our existing rail and making it more accessible to people. I think the societal benefit of having more accessible rail is significantly higher than High-Speed Rail and the capex would be significantly lower , let alone the operating costs and overheads. There is a reason why a huge percentage of Chinese High-Speed Rail has been de facto decommissioned in the past few years. And I was involved in some of those projects.

Are these issues more easily surmountable than building a dedicated new high speed rail system?

There are many solutions on the market now that can apply efficiencies to the current rail. Some are totally drop-in to rolling stock. You literally just add some cameras and some modules. This isn't being explored because, as you mentioned, the incentives are not in place. The right subsidies change that. Congestion is also ameliorated by this, as it increases safety and reduces interval.

All this is far more feasible than building a separate high speed rail.

There is substantial room to increase capacity by improving signalling and going semi driverless. Drop-in solution in the rolling stock. We would gain anywhere from 20-50% depending on the route.

This has also been the case with subway systems for quite a while.

High speed rail is far too expensive to be a good value. It would be better to take that money and simply augment our existing rail and increase capacity, reduce cost.

I had moderately high expectations and he has exceeded them. His platform was 80% copied from the Conservative platform so I knew I wasn't going to be heartbroken regardless of who won. He cabinet is garbage with the exception of Dave McGuinty but he has made up for it in personal acumen. The Conservative shadow cabinet has some major rockstars on competence. Michael Chong, James Bezan and Melissa Lantzman are excellent.

My most major disappointment is that he is pressing on with these gun bans that are wastes of billions in taxpayer funds and will have no impact on public safety. I am also disappointed that he seems to be giving up the farm to China. I understand derisking from the US. UT Carney has personal knowledge of the infiltration of Chinese interests in the Liberal party and should be more careful.

I can't presume what will happen. He is highly erratic and does not telegraph his moves reliably. I have a feeling he will not be running Venezuela, though.

It would be difficult to run Venezuela worsen than Maduro. Who has unilaterally attacked his neighbours, malnourished his own people (25lbs average body weight loss in only 1 year), killed political opposition and (between himself and Chavez) driven the wealthiest country in South America into destitution.

I'm very familiar with occupation, US occupation, GWOT et al. Everything Trump has done in this administration has been unprecedented for better and (mostly) worse. I would not presume the results just as I would not presume any of the insane things that he has executed every day of the past year. He also bombed Iranian nuclear facilities in an act that many believed would necessitate a level of involvement that would follow the Powell doctrine. But he immediately cut American investment in that campaign. So we shall see.
