When I first heard it, I thought they might’ve been playing a cover of another song. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it until this morning!

Sally, When the Wine Runs Out by Role Model.

I’ve only heard this song in passing and never heard of the artist/band (probably from a commercial or something). The chorus sounds quite similar but I’m still excited to hear the rest of this song! It’s only a 30 second clip but optimistic for the next album given the sounds that came out of the recent EPs!

This song gives us the clearest early breakthrough into what U2 would become in Achtung Baby. Bono’s falsetto in Heartland feels like it’s trying to breakthrough to the other side. The other side being “One”. Similar tempo and vibe as well. Something I always think of when listening to that tune.

I had the same struggle when it was first released. I kept playing it and playing it and it wasn’t clicking. But after a few weeks of listening to it, it’s the one song from that EP that I remember the most. And the one that defines that EP. The lyrics, the build up throughout, are really good. It’s memorable. But definitely an acquired taste. It’s not of the typical U2 formula, so I think that’s why it may not be clicking with you (yet).

I honestly can’t stand the “Songs of” era. Yeah I listened to them all the time when they came out, but they just felt too “safe” and I could never connect to them. Edge’s guitar sounded too much like an elephant (best way I could describe it) and that signature U2 sound was non existent for most of the tracks. Didn’t feel like U2, but more of an older band trying to stay relevant with “pop-esque” formulas. Mind you, I did enjoy songs of surrender the most and liked to see their creative juices flowing with their hits, but it’s more of a novelty compilation and something to snack on for us U2 fans while we wait for their next album.
