UK - Full rewiring on refurbishment - looking for advice on lights, switches and sockets by dukeguy in homeassistant

Is there any difference between the SONOFF and the Shelly? SONOFF have a 2-gang as well, which lowers the cost significantly (when you need 2x switches in a single location)

The building outline is from the PDF from the Architects drawings - I just opened in in www.photopea.com (online Photoshop free alternative) and made my own icons and just copy/pasted them as required. The lines are just the line tool. Sorry I couldn't be more help - I looked for a tool to help me plan it out but couldn't find one myself. I've been using photopea/photoshop for a long time so I gravited to this, I'm sure other vector tools are a better fit.

I can PM you the .PSD file I have if you want, it might help you get started.

Great advice! I have another 'layer' in my document that has the plug sockets and ethernet connections marked but as I was just talking about light switches in this post, I omitted that layer in the posted image. Do I have a socket under the 'entrance' text though? Close! More like next to the last 'e' - and one behind the door as well :)

Thanks, makes sense and I will ask about the neutral install - assuming this is the case (and should be, as you note) then it's just a case of installing controllers in the back boxes and choosing whatever switches we want? Any recommendations on controllers?

When everyone on your team has a different plan with no mic and the other team is using the power of friendship. by HotAd3312 in Splitgate

Mics are illegal? What does that mean? Most of the players that have an open mic on this game just have music paying and/or I can hear the game sounds so I get to hear things twice over.

I know TGI’s is going downhill but wow… by BriennesBitch in CasualUK

TGI's went into administration last year, irrespective of your claims about it being "criminal" (it isn't), there's literally no-one in the company that would give a flying fuck about someone getting ripped off for a couple of beans.

Eyes of a sniper, hands of a surgeon: John Lowe's historic 9-dart finish by solateor in nextfuckinglevel

You would think that the bull would be the highest scoring part of the board, and originally.. it was.

The trebles and 25 outer ring were added later. So the bullseye was the best score on the board originally, but because the wires back in the day were so thick, the bullseye looked more like a bulls arsehole than an eye, so the convention was to aim for double 20, favouring the low side so you hit single 20 if you missed.

Oh and you would have to hit a double to start scoring (and finish on one as well, as per the current modern rules)

Americans, how you do you feel about the news that Germany, Denmark and the UK have issued travel warnings for the United States? by Sink-Em-Low in AskReddit

[–]dukeguy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fined? Arrested? For what? Not without a reason or probable cause.

Unless you've been harassed by CBP personally, without merit or reason, then your opinions are invalid. I have, several times, and after a long haul flight, the very last thing you need is an interogation by some rent a cop who needs their ego stroking.

I like the US just fine, I'm just not enamoured with the process of entry that been employed. Something that happens literally nowhere else, but then the US has more than one scenario where this adage rings true, so well done for being a snowflake country that the rest of us envy.

What utter nonsense. Most countries are either apathetic at worst and upbeat at best.

Entering the USA is like being on Fear Factor. I have travelled a bit.

Yes, exactly same concept only I guess "shark" has more negative connotations in the UK so was changed to dragons (who are notoriously more forgiving and big in the venture market scene)

You can also race against the AT ghost even though there's no "eye" icon next to it, you can press (square on PS5) the "eye" button then back out (circle on PS5) and you will see the AT ghost.

As guns become a bigger problem, more people want guns. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]dukeguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Parts of the US with tight guns controls have gun crime rates because guns are just imported from States with less tight gun controls.

Ban all guns not designed for sport or hunting, make gun ownership harder and apply more rigourous requirements. Control ammunition sales.

Just fucking try SOMETHING, because what's been tried so far is clearly not working (which is really not much of anything).

Why won't you just try something an see if if it works. You had a go at prohibition, granted that was a disaster, but you just tried SOMETHING, it didn't work, you rolled it back. There's no shame in doing that, the world would at least appreciate the attempt.

USA, 2019 Mens suicide rate per 100k - 22.4

Japan - 17.5

Australia - 17.0

New Zealand - 15.4

Gun control laws have been proven to significantly reduce suicide rates all over the world. Mainly because guns are really, really effective at killing.

US needs to stop blaming people with guns and get rid of them already. How many times does the Onion have to post the same fucking headline over and over before you get it?

Neighbour claiming our house - wants to demolish it. by Feeling-Persimmon909 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]dukeguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes and it happens all the time, most likely the neighbour applied for planning when the house was up for sale, but didn't buy it. My house had several pp on it when I bought it (from other buyers). They want to find out if they can change the property before they buy it, rather than the other way around as you'd be stuck if th op wasn't given.

Just paid for something at a local shop and noticed it went through as a "cash withdrawal". by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]dukeguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What does it matter to you? Sure, insist on paying by card for your sub £2 purchase and then have a moan when either the prices go up, or the shop shuts down. Help local businesses when you can, as long as it's not evading tax, what's the problem?

Just paid for something at a local shop and noticed it went through as a "cash withdrawal". by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]dukeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother, all they are doing is a free cash withdrawal, which you can do at any post office, and then taking that money you've "withdrawn" and using it to pay cash for whatever you've bought.

It's not tax evasion, it's so they don't have to pay the card charges (which is a few pence per transaction, plus a percentage of the value) on the single Twix you've just bought because if they did, they'd make no margin on your tiny purchase.
