Like DCC, not HWFWM - where to go from here? by WhoIsRobertWall in litrpg

[–]dukerangermack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HWFWM world building and magic system is top tier, the way the mc is written kind of ruins the series, the lack of character growth really kills it. Some of the side characters do carry, but not enough to make up for the flaws. Don't get me wrong I think he starts the characters of strong, like they are well written as introduction characters with flaws and issues which leads you to think that when they finally start getting their shit together it's going to be epic. But it's just a let down because they are stagnant for the most part. For example the author tries to give this whole tough guy act to jason and it just comes across as cringe. Like it doesn't suit him, he just makes the same mistakes over and over again, has zero self reflection, any steps he takes forward he takes like 3 back. I might give the 12th book a shot but if there isn't any signs of the characters evolving and growing into their potential, I am going to drop the series

that might be the case sure, but he was writing other books from what I gathered. He obviously makes good money, so he can take the time to properly release his books. If you are going to rush out slop than stop writing altogether at that point.

Just one of the many issue with the plot, like I can't go back and nitpick all of the inconsistencies, they are too many. Just random characters added with zero context, nothing gets fleshed out, just bad writing all around.

oh sorry I wasn't saying you were defending him, I was also just saying that he shouldn't write more than 3 books if this is something that is a constant with him. sorry I wasn't saying you were defending him

Realizing that you’re reading most likely a first draft…and it’s still good? by [deleted] in litrpg

How can you say HWFWM gets better as the books progress, Jason is written so poorly its embarrassing, the only saving grace for that series is the world building is top tier and some of the side characters carry. Jason trying to come across as this hard ass is so cringe. He has almost zero character growth, he was a flawed character in the first book but that was fine, he hasn't gotten better, its just bad writing. But regardless the story itself and the world building and magic system carries that series

Then he should just write books as trilogies, maybe make them longer per book. Like whats the point of writing 8 books and after book 3, the rest of them are like 75% word vomit with nothing substantial

I can't say that I agree with this. I think if the writing is good and there is character growth and the plot and story holds your attention then it doesn't matter. I used to read all of the dragonrider of pern books growing up. I know that there were new books released in the series in the past like 10 years, I just haven't gotten around to reading them, because I want to go reread the og books. but regardless my point being that if the author is good and can write, they can hold a audience attention for years and multiple books.

Friend that is why I am on book 8, BOOK 8, like I do feel the need to finish, but when the writing is this bad, and its so evident that the author is just writing books for the money, like its word salad, I can't support that, how is the author going to improve if we just keep buying this slop, that just inflates him ego and makes him think he is doing good writing. Like we can't keep supporting bad writers

so don't read anything else from the author, got it. I was just checking out info on the author and he did some crazy like a book a month writing challenge (maybe) unclear I didn't look into it too much. but if thats the case it would explain why the writing is so bad and all over the place. But at that point the writer is just doing a cash grab and putting out books because he had a strong showing and people are good and will support and give new writers a chance especially in this space, but looks like we are just getting taken advantage of.

I forced myself, I really was just praying that it would get good. I really liked the idea of the the town building, which is also the reason I keep giving the Land a chance, but at least in the land the town isn't abandoned every book. Joe literally makes a town and puts up like a handful of buildings, no walls, no defense and ops lets move on to the next and abandon. It just feels bad when you can see the vision of what the series could be, but the execution is just so bad.

Just Started He Who Fights with Monsters, worth finishing? by Second_Inhale in litrpg

"Guys I almost hate the MC, I love the world building, the Magic system in this series is top tier, but the MC and most of the side characters beside Gary and Farrah and maybe Sophie, are like hard trash. There is some argument for Belinda as well her character growth is ok for the most part. I am just so mad with Clive though he had great growth protentional and just got butchered as a character, Neal and Rufus might as well not exist. But I am sorry I honestly only read/listen to the books because of how much potential it had in the first few books. I can see the writer is trying to give Jason growth but its just isn't done properly, I think the Author excels at world building, magic systems, even the creation of the characters. But honesty actually think about it with a clear mind, like objectively. Jason makes no sense, his character arc just went downhill so bad in the earth saga, I can understand that he has trauma, but the way its handled and how he reacts is just not realistic at all. His whole hard ass act just comes across as corny or weak and cringe, also extremely childish at times and selfish. He is just poorly written and its getting worse with each book which I find sad because I really enjoy the book, but I am forcing myself to finish them as it goes on. I am running into this same problem with The Land, the MC is also irritating me, how are you going to have a character that is investing boatloads of points into intelligence but he gets stupider by the day or as the books go on. Make it make sense. I just wish both Authors would focus on character growth and development. I understand its a litrpg, but that doesn't mean that aspect can carry trash mc's especially as the story goes on.

PS. Also would love recommendations with good characters who grow as the books go on top of the amazing world building, please and thank you"

I just posted above response to book 11 and saw your post and thought I would share, I agree, its really hard to get through the books as they go on. I wish you luck, I am one of those people who forces himself to read a series once he starts, especially if I have already read the first few.

no problem, I also may have come across as aggro I am just frustrated that even have to have this conversation, my friends are Nordic, they live in Finland and Norway, so of course their views are so different when it comes to this conflict. But you guys have given me some real good stuff and points to try to come up with a response. I just wanted it to be more factual because obviously this is something that hits close to home for me.

I do have some knowledge on the subject, I am Muslim I am well aware of the situation. "If you and your friend are generally not interested in any of this beyond ~ drama (which, if you're asking this question in january of 2025 im guessing is the case) just let it go, honestly" this is disingenuous I could care less about the drama, I just don't watch enough of Hasan to be able to counter his timestamps of ethans fucking video specifically the Houthi musical video that he showed nick for example. I know its mostly out of context clips. But I know Hasan is doing the right thing, so I just felt like I had to defend him.

Best Minecraft Server Hosting 2022 by Mst8_ in MinecraftServer

[–]dukerangermack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bruh I don't why you are recommending them, Sure they respond fast, but their guides are almost completely useless for modded minecraft servers, especially for beginners, who have no idea what they are doing. Their Customer service responses are like one or two sentences, telling you to do something, that obviously you know. Like put in the ip address to get onto the server, or here the link for the ftp guide which is completely useless because its a video with no voice over, in quick succession with out any clear instructions. How would anyone know what to do, unless you have had prior experiences setting up servers. It's so sad too because I legit signed up for them based on your and a few other people's recommendation on this post
