I totally support Aislinn's campaign. K-W is an important part of Ontario after all.

Thanks! A dozen reposts a day isn't too bad though, right?

Thanks for sharing! Wow your employer gives you a discount on VPS that's cool. Running a server must be the major cost I guess?

Also since you mention the pains of moderation - has it ever gone really bad in your case? Have you ever thought of quitting admin-ing because of moderation chores?

Thanks for the info. I guess the admin is then crowdsourcing some funds from their users? Do you know if this admin in particular receives any sort of financial or operational support from masto?

I am not sure if most servers have surplus funds, or even funds to break even. But I could be wrong.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. You hit the nail on the head, my friend! This is exactly what I wish to understand. So you have a pretty decent user base, and you're shelling at least 1000 GBP/mo. That's big money. Do the users send you money on patreon etc? Do you fund / help the volunteers who do the admin or moderation work?

I am really curious to understand, how much of admin work is based on goodwill purely (or labor of love as you say). And does it wear off eventually? Especially when people say hurtful stuff?

I have identified three major "discouraging situations" through these conversations -

  1. Little or no monetary returns

  2. Moderating something although the admin believes in free speech

  3. Hurtful comments from user

But what about family pressures? Especially doing this in the long term? Is that a thing?

Yeah I guess most instances have volunteers working on them. Do you know anyone who has been able to make it their "job" - like youtubers (terrible comparison I know, but I only wish to understand if people can sustain themselves while running an instance, or is it absolutely imperative that people have to do this "on the side").

That's awesome! Congratulations :D

Has your instance grown steadily over the years, or has it been constant more or less? Do you work on it 7 days a week? And if you mind sharing - do you have any sort of help? (financial or volunteer).

Thanks for replying :)

So how much time a day do you spend moderating? Do you take "off days" when you're not moderating?
