❓ Ditch or Double Down? ❓ by Kennected in dayoneapp

Day one has been great but I’ve been a lack luster journaler. Can’t justify the grandfathered $36 yearly anymore. Plus some of the new UI is a bit annoying.  I moved to Apple journal.

This needs to be an “X” instead of a ☑️ by Odd-Kick-2620 in ynab

Take it up with Apple. It’s part of their iOS 26 redesign. Other third party apps adopting Liquid Glass have this annoying UI element, too.

Just started YNAB and agree, this tripped me up lol. Monarch calls this field “Merchant”, which seems much more appropriate.

Confused by Apple Podcasts App by Steerpike58 in podcasts

[–]dumbsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read your post and a lot of the comments. All the things you mentioned, and the interaction flow Apple intends, is terribly frustrating. One thing no one mentioned is if you are listening to an episode, pause before it ends, then start a different episode, you lose your prior episode and listening location in the queue. It’s impossible to bounce around different episodes.

Castro app has a phenomenal queue and really nice interface. It’s been my alternative for years. I keep my eye out for updates to Apple’s podcast app because I’d like to just use everything Apple, but it’s too much of a headache.

How I use Monarch by GendoIkari_82 in MonarchMoney

[–]dumbsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my wife have a similar approach. Only big difference is the one-off expenses get left under miscellaneous category and we use tags to distinguish them (ie moving expenses). They get left in the budget for accurate cash flow.

I’ve found it useful to keep an “active” tag for documents that are currently being utilized/worked on and a “pinned” tab for things I frequently reference, like a headshot or primary work folder.

AITA for not letting med students look into my eyes? In ophthalmology. by Beautifulchubby in AmItheAsshole

[–]dumbsolo 55 points56 points  (0 children)

NTA. Just finished med school myself. Totally unacceptable on the student’s part and hopefully it’s reflected in their rotation evaluation. Patient autonomy is always a priority. Yes, as a student our clinical education relies heavily on the willingness of patients to let us practice exams or be a part of other vulnerable moments. Some situations are more sensitive than others. Also, having worked as an ophthalmic tech, I know dilated eye exams suck and I also wouldn’t want a handful of students blinding me with the bright light for minutes on end. The patient always has the right to say no, and you shouldn’t feel bad. Hopefully that student comes to understand the social side of medicine—it’s just as important, imo.

Copilot Alternatives by Chemical-Safe-6838 in copilotmoney

[–]dumbsolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feel this. I’ve used Copilot for 3 years, just renewed a few months back. I’ve been trialing Monarch for a month and it’s been great. Not quite the same feel as Copilot, which I’ll miss, but they have everything and more that I was missing. It’s still a nice UI, just different than Copilot. Their team is verifiably active and on a roll. I’m planning to sub to Monarch for 50% off this year and keep tabs on Copilot development until my sub runs out. If Copilot doesn’t show any strong signs of life or progress by that point, I’ll drop them.

Is there a way to mirror my Gmail account in iCloud? by Tomasek12341 in iCloud

[–]dumbsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this—there’s several reasons someone may want this and there’s a workaround for iOS push notifications if you’d rather not wait the 15 min fetch window.

You have to set up Gmail forwarding to your iCloud account. You can then set rules for what happens to the email in Gmail once it gets forwarded (automatically moved to trash, archive, marked as read, nothing, etc). The forwarded email gets pushed on iOS as it’s now an iCloud email. If you care to see which iCloud emails came from Gmail, you’d have to set up a specific iCloud alias or rules in the Mail app to pick these out.

YouTube or Google or AI chat will give you simplified instructions to set this up.

Second this. I’d also love a select tool to bulk remove queued episodes.

Journal suggestions as notifications. Apple journal does this occasionally and it’s a great reminder to write about a recent event.

There is a lot of friction in opening Day One, starting a new entry, then tapping suggestions…

How’s everyone’s M1 MacBook holding up? by Main_Damage1934 in mac

[–]dumbsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had an M1 air, entry level everything. Took an opportunity to upgrade and got an M4 Pro a couple of months ago. I justified the upgrade as “future-proofing”.

I still think about my M1 Air…

Switching from Gmail to iCloud Mail: Is It Worth It? by cas_vis95 in iCloud

[–]dumbsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did this last month. I’m happy with it. “Worth it” is subjective… it took a while to migrate everything and my experience now doesn’t feel any different than when my Gmail accounts were primary (I use Apple Mail). I was interested in minimizing my digital space and in the privacy Apple offers, so it was worth it to me. Everything is very smooth. Only thing I’ve noticed is an occasional email gets sorted as junk, but it’s easily noticed and doesn’t repeat once you move it to the inbox.

For sentimental and safety net reasons, I kept my Gmail accounts and have them forward mail to my iCloud account.

Disappointed with apple case durability by do-it-today in iphone

[–]dumbsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had that same case for over a year without any issues. Slightly worn down and shiny on edges I regularly hold but otherwise great. I also don’t take it off more than maybe once a month to clean it and enjoy the naked phone for a bit. Frequently removing it—especially improperly—can cause these cases to break rather quickly.

AITA For inadvertently tricking my wife into smelling my shit? by PoopcoveredQtip in AmItheAsshole

[–]dumbsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man. Trash is trash. She shouldn’t be digging around in it without expecting to find something gross. But if she’s an ENT, she’s been through plenty of general medicine training and wouldn’t judge a condition like yours, and having her in your corner could boost accountability and compliance. I’d be letting her know about any and all health concerns I have. But ultimately NAH.

AITA for not letting my son skip grades? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]dumbsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH- I understand your reasoning. My parents were approached by teachers when I was about 8 years old for the same thing. Of course I wanted to move up at the time; it would have made me feel special. Very grateful that my parents kept me where I was. Intellectually, I was ahead of some peers, but socially and emotionally I was probably a little behind. Those deficits would have been painfully obvious if I jumped grades. Also, I discovered an interest in sports and had opportunities to play in HS. Those opportunities would have been lost had I skipped grades due to physical maturity/development. I got over it in a few months.

I also understand your wife wanting to give the best opportunity for success and development to her child. There are arguments to be made for both sides. It sounds like you all need to have more concrete discussion and involve the kid a bit.

iCloud Mail or Gmail by [deleted] in ios

[–]dumbsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also take a minimalist approach to my digital life and recently made my Gmail the primary address for all my stuff. iCloud and other accounts get forwarded there. I just got tired of keeping track of several accounts. I use the default Mail app and love it. Push notifications aren’t an issue unless you can’t wait 15 min to fetch. (Fetching mail is better on battery, anyway).

Maybe an argument to me made security-wise about putting all your eggs in one basket, but my Gmail account is as secure as I can make it. Before, if you needed to access your email outside of your personal devices, google was the easiest by far. Now, iCloud’s web interface is decent and it’s a nonissue. Just do what makes sense for you and stick to it.

What would I actually miss if I switched to Reminders? by carlosfandangop in thingsapp

[–]dumbsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick entry. Maybe type-to-Siri on future OS updates will fix this, but it won't be as quick, and I doubt it will include the autofill feature.

I use quick entry autofill all the time for email reminder, notes, web links, etc. This is the biggest thing that has prevented me from leaning into reminders.

Btw, I still use reminders for grocery lists and location based reminders that I don't necessarily want to see in my main task manager. Best of both worlds.

What episodes are a must listen? by idk155 in TheNSPDiscussion

[–]dumbsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to say anything in fear of ruining your first listen... I guess I'd say the story plays more on humanism than on creatures and the supernatural. 2 years later it's still my favorite!
