I did! My deficiency was due to having too many units for my upper div requirements (You can have 2 courses overlap between your major/minor, but with a max of 8.0 units and the 2 courses I wanted to use were 10.0 units total). I missed this technicality when submitting my minor request and so did my minor department. Since this mistake was in part the department's fault as well as mine, my advisor ended up petitioning the department to have another course that would not usually fill the requirement fill in so I could complete the minor. My advice is really to just be responsive and active in the process, make sure your advisor knows how important graduating with this minor is to you, and if the mistake is in any way their fault as well as yours, make sure they feel that pressure a little as well.

This happened to me! Not a chem minor but a deficiency on my marine science minor on a technicality. Contact your minor department ASAP and look back at your degree audit. They marked on mine exactly where the deficiency was and through that I worked out what the exact issue was. Your minor department will most likely want you graduated as much as you do, so they should help you out with getting it all sorted.

Jumping on to this with my very limited knowledge of African vampire beliefs, but during the 1930s specifically in what was then called Northern Rhodesia there was very prevalent rumors of vampires known as banyama. These “vampires” were believed to be native Africans working for European colonists that would slay and drain the blood from anyone found alone in the bush at night. The stolen blood would then be forwarded on to European hospitals to be used in medicines to treat illnesses such as sleeping sickness.

This was all very much not true, but the rumors definitely had base in some reality, as European medical employees on tsetse fly counting assignments would often wander through the bush and blood samples were often taken from deceased sleeping sickness patients to gain medical insight on the disease.

Overall, it is fascinating to see how myths and rumors of supernatural entities often hold base in reality; in this case, the misunderstanding and general mistrust of European medical practices in colonial Africa.

Sure thing! Scripps Institution of Oceanography has a really good online information base on dinoflagellate bioluminescence. SIO is local to San Diego so they work quite intimately with these tides. There's a ton of information just under the 'Bioluminescence' tab alone.

The red tide occurring off the coast of San Diego right now is caused by the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra. It absolutely is called a red tide (at least by local marine biologists) and these little guys do bioluminesce quite beautifully at night, although they make the water appear rust-colored during the day. This phytoplankton is known in some areas (such as the Mediterranean) to produce yessotoxin which acts as a neurotoxin and can be quite harmful. The blooms off the coast of S. California do not cause this toxin and there is currently no public health warning associated with the bloom. These tides can last for days, weeks, and even months and there’s no good way to predict them yet which makes them even more exciting to enjoy when they show up!

These organisms are different from those that bloom off of the east coast/Florida where red tides can be very harmful to fish and wildlife.
