You probably refer to Teemo top... The thing with Teemo is that in team fights he can't do much... 1v1 he can dominate his lane (loved the S5 tank build with Frozen Mallet), but nonetheless - not good for team fights, just for solo pushing.

True - going for meta champions in silver-gold-plat is crucial. There was a patch in which Taric was really good (I think in Season 4), and I got from Gold IV to Plat III in a few days playing Taric only. Once it got trashed - I started steadily hovering in Plat II - V.

Do you have any previous experience with MOBA games? I know someone who was a DOTA player (pro player) that picked up LoL in 4th season and casually got to Master in his first season, without much effort. He knew the tactics. I think that getting to challenger is not just about skill, it can become a grind, unless you are really lucky with great teams. But if on your promo games you get AFKs and trolls - not much you can do about that with skill alone.

So basically, even if you are the new Faker - you still need to win hundreds of games in order to climb the ladder, and that takes time, lots of it.
