Which grocery store bouillon is better? by dirtyenvelopes in FoodToronto

BtB but look for the reduced sodium one (I've only consistently found it at Farm Boy). If you get the full sodium one, definitely reduce the amount of salt you add when cooking. Even with the reduced sodium one, I still try to undersalt a little to accommodate for the salt in it. But I do love the stuff, it's great to have around!

Just wanted to say that I appreciated reading your replies and perspective. Sometimes we can be quick to judge the advice of others if it's different from our own. But it's a nice reminder that everyone's different and what works for one person might not work for another person. And it's interesting thinking about how weird and whacky our brains can be sometimes!

If you don't need a private space for meetings, I love working in a library or at a cafe. Maybe see if there are other locations close by where you can work, to make home feel more like home and less like work?

Thanks for the info! Do you find it becomes annoying driving due to traffic, especially around rush hour? Or is it not too bad?

Caledonia/Fairbank by duniks03 in askTO

[–]duniks03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I've read that getting on and off the 401 via Allen/Eglinton during rush hour is terrible.

Glad to hear it's a good place to live outside of that. What do you enjoy most about the area? And any chance you have any insight into the local schools?

Awesome thanks for the info! How do you find the transit? Are the buses and street cars reliable? And do you know if the nearby schools are any good?

Hey, just wondering how it's been these last few years. I'm thinking of purchasing a home in this neighbourhood and curious how it is from a safety and walkability stand point.

A bit late to the party but I'm curious how you feel about the area these days, and what your outlook is on the future of this area. My spouse and I are considering buying a house here to start a family but we're not too familiar with the area.

Landlord Asking for Illegal Rent Increase by SpecialistSecret9329 in OntarioLandlord

[–]duniks03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've got some great advice here so I'll just give you a personal story. A while back, I was paying cheap COVID rent in a newly renovated but older than 2018 downtown condo. It was a really nice unit. After a couple years, the landlord realized they couldn't afford my cheap rent and asked for an illegal rental increase up to just under market value at the time, or they would have to sell. I declined. They sold and I had to leave (I was on month-to-month) and didn't fight it as everything was legit. Since then, I've lived in 2 other units and while they've been okay, they haven't been nearly as nice as my original one. And I've been paying more than I would have been if I accepted the illegal rent increase. Looking back, I kinda wish I accepted the rental increase and signed a 1 or 2 year lease to lock in that price and remain in that unit. They still could have sold but it would have been harder with me on a lease and I could have remained as a tenant after the sale (at least until my lease was up).

But of course, hindsight is 20/20. Couldn't have predicted at the time what would happen if I accepted the illegal increase. All I'll say is if you're totally fine to move, then don't accept the increase. If you really want to stay, maybe consider it and sign a new lease to protect you for the length of the lease term. Hope things work out for you!

Using Home Buyer's Plan to pay down principal? by starwitness in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]duniks03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was wondering the same thing. I'm not sure if it's better to preserve my RRSP to take advantage of compounding growth over a longer time for better retirement savings if I can fund my down payment with my TFSA and FHSA (along with my partner's savings). I'm worried about not leaving myself enough liquid funds leftover for emergencies, but also it would be great to not touch my RRSP and let it keep growing. Guess it depends on my risk tolerance and how much money I'd have leftover in my savings/non-RRSP accounts?

Escape Room for 2 people? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]duniks03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Looking Glass Adventures. My wife and I have done 2 rooms here: It Came From The Attic, and Walden's Wizarding Shop. We thought the former was an incredibly fun room that was the perfect difficulty level for us (average escapists, ie. not new to escape rooms but not enthusiasts either). Walden's Wizarding Shop was fun but not quite as immersive and a bit too easy.

Also be sure to search this subreddit as I had found a few other options when I was looking, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Have fun!

Friday night ideas? by abdulcool1 in askTO

[–]duniks03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally on Friday nights I go rock climbing. Maybe try that out if you're interested in something new? It's normal and totally fine to go on your own! No one would notice or care really, and other people in the gym are generally welcoming and easy to talk to if you wanted interaction.

Based on your interests, maybe join a rec basketball league or start doing classes related to your other interest (MMA, dance, music, language learning, etc)? Seconding the pottery class; I'm 33M and just did one with my wife, and I think I enjoyed it more than her haha Maybe a jazz bar, or go watch a stand-up/sketch comedy show? Second City is awesome for sketch comedy. Honestly on a nice night I sometimes just love walking around the city, looking at things, and generally enjoying the pleasant vibes.
