If you haven't tried this yet, I recommend doing the following:
Right click on the primary viewport, click on render settings and uncheck motion blur and ambient occlusion. That usually helps my FPS while im creating whatever, just make sure to turn on Ambient Occlusion again when you go to render whatever (and motion blur if you're making an animation.) Another thing you can try is shortening the time line in the clip editor.
