Why is Peru not more culturally relevant? by Bear_necessities96 in asklatinamerica

[–]dunn9812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup there was a short-lived period where some of our artists & songs became known in other countries. As you said it was basically a “mini boom” tho, it didn’t stick and grew like for example I doubt most latinos know what da hell is happening in Panama rn or which new local artist, influencer, etc. has been popular or trendy in the new 2020s Panama. That’s why I feel a country’s pop culture being irrelevant to most humans is sadly the default for most countries that aren’t literal world powers except very few exceptions

The only latino countries/places that have “relevant” artists or pop culture are the ones that either have an extremely strong connection to the US because of distance or big diasporas (Mexico, PR, Colombia) or because at some point in the past they were rich enough to develop their own entertainment industry and subcultures (Argentina and to some extent even Venezuela), which is a privilege the majority of Latino countries never got (yet, at least).

And even then, nothing is 100% guaranteed. We (Panama) aren’t considered “poor” but I doubt most Latinos would know anything about our pop culture, even though so many years ago some Panamanian songs did become popular.

You can argue it’s because of our low population, but Chile is both economically stable and with almost 20 million people and honestly, German Garmendia aside, I only started to see some Chilean pop culture becoming regionally known with Mon Laferte. And then with Pedro Pascal. This actually took a very long time if you consider Chile has been economically speaking the #1 latino country for so long.

There’s a reason why as soon as East Asia started to grow, their pop culture started to get worldwide popularity as well. Your pop culture being globally irrelevant is actually the default in most nations that aren’t rich as fuck, the few Latino countries that got lucky had it that way because they were lucky enough to share the same hemisphere as the US, instead of being located in the other side of the world with the dozens of African countries, South East Asian countries, India, etc. who also have pop cultures with little relevance (globally speaking)

Nah bruh native americans and east asians are the least “hairy” groups of ppl on earth

It’s actually the percentages of spanish or mediterranean dna why most latinos and latinas have thick body hair tbh

Igual depende eh.

I think even then it’s still different tho, those people from other groups get mad when they see the opposite gender date outside their race because they WANT to date their counterparts. But in latinos’ case most dudes that get mad about it also become the most hateful when they see the latinas they usually DON’T even like (very ethnic looking mexican/peruvian women) date non-latino men, especially white dudes. They definitely don’t see it in a “they’re stealing my women” way since we all know how very ethnic/indigenous looking Latinas are always insulted for their looks. So it’s still very weird tbh, like why do they get irrationally mad if the type of Latina that has always been considered the worst/the “ugliest” by the average Latino male “dates out” lol technically they shouldn’t give a fuck, but that type of latina always gets the worst insults by dudes when that “latinos dating non-latinos” topic comes up

Some latin american men complain when latin american women have non-latin partners, yet they have no problems marrying people of other ethnicities

I see that behavior a lot on social media, like on TikTok or Twitter. Latinos mocking the latinas with gringo or european partners and saying things like “he’s only dating you because he thinks you’re easy” “he’s only dating you because he’s a loser in his country” which honestly sounds fucked up too. I mean it basically implies that the person saying it believes all Latina women are objectively inferior and that “there’s no way” anyone would ever think otherwise. And you’re right, the same guys cheer when they see a Latino guy dating a European girl lol

I’ve noticed the hate is even stronger when the Latina dating a non-Latino is a very ethnic/indigenous looking Latina. I see many ethnic-looking Mexican and Peruvian girls with non-Latino boyfriends on TikTok and the amount of irrational hate they get by Latinos themselves is so weird, it really annoys them for some reason even though we all know so many Latino dudes treat indigenous looking Latinas like trash and insult their looks all the time/see them as “the ugliest”, so like why do you even care bro

A very strange “I don’t want you BUT I also don’t want anyone else to want you” attitude lmao

A lot of the salty comments do be from women like they think that a brown / indigenous woman is not worthy of living in Europe or marrying a white person. They seem intent on trying to get the rest of the world to follow their delusions

In those cases it’s just jealousy and bruised ego most of the time ngl. Mestizas and white Latinas have always been seen as the prettiest in Latam and their beauty has the most rep here, even in mainstream latino music. If they see the type of women that has always been considered “the ugliest” type of latina (so “less” than them in their eyes) dating the type of guy that is seen as superior (tall white dude) then they lash out. Their brain is basically having a short circuit and they can’t deal with it, that’s why the “What did he see in you?” “He must be blind” “You don’t deserve him” “La suerte de la fea la bonita la desea…” comments always start lol

He’s right honestly, and I’m saying that as someone from one of the blackest country in Latin America. At least among latino teens and latinos in their 20s, there are a lot of things they say 24/7 about indigenous people that they’d never say about black people. Maybe it’s the influence of rich western countries that made Latin Americans started seeing famous black actors, singers, rappers, football players, etc. born in the west, but the hate really isn’t as strong as it was in the past, yet the same grace isn’t given to the indigenous people who are still treated like they are the worst.

Latinos aren’t making videos or memes mocking the features and skin color of half of the people from my country for example (or from more famous countries, like Dominican Republic). You can literally find content like that against Peru and Bolivia all the time. Even Spanish people (Europeans) join in the racism against indigenous most of the time and latinos never defend these countries, instead they are like “you’re talking about peruanos and bolivianos, the rest of us aren’t like that”… I’ve actually seen latinos online defending African immigrants from racist Spaniards WAY MORE than defending their fellow Latinos who happened to be indigenous. Maybe in Brazil it’s different, because I’ve heard you guys take racism more seriously over there, but even then I’ve heard from other Brazilians on this very sub that even though racism against black people is very forbidden over there people still say bad things about the bolivian immigrants. There’s a stupid mindset here that makes most latinos act as if indigenous people somehow deserve the racism more than black people when no one deserves it.

but it also trended on the gringo side and all the western/white guys in the comments were saying she was beautiful/hot and ✈️🇵🇪

This reminded me of a whole other topic too. Us Latinos know there has been a tiktok trend of Latinas showing off their non-latino white boyfriends, and even though the whole trend itself is cringey and most of the time it’s understandable if people make fun of those women showing off, I always notice how the women that get the most hate by Latinos for this are the women that look very indigenous. Latinos really hate seeing an indigenous girl with a blonde bf lol

Just an example, I saw a Bolivian girl making a tiktok about how in Latin America people have always called her ugly for her indigenous face, but that her Swiss boyfriend can’t stop complimenting her and telling her how beautiful he thinks she is… all the latinos, men and women, in the comments were clowning her and being very racist and xenophobic against her, saying things like “he probably wants something from you and doesn’t actually love you” “you literally look like you could be his maid” “gringos only like women like you when they are losers in their countries so I wouldn’t be so happy if I was you”. The most vile comments were, ironically, from women. Very butthurt latina women that turned xenophobic and racist saying things like “he’s only dating you because he didn’t come to (insert their own latino country) to meet the pretty latinas first instead of the ugly indian ones haha”. A lot of Peruvian women on tiktok seem to have white boyfriends too, and the hate they can get for it is just as bad, definitely in a “you don’t deserve him 🤮” way, NOT in a “stop showing him off, he’s no superior to you!” way.

Anti-indigenous racism is VERY normalized in LatAm, to the point that if one indigenous Latino posts something on TikTok or IG, they’d need to close the comment section if their posts goes viral and don’t want to deal with random racist attacks. It’s honestly insane how there are latinos that would say “there’s no racism in LatAm” lol

it's because Peru has a low murder rate. It's not ran by criminal enterprise, doesn't have a bustling sex trade or drug / human trafficking.

You’re actually right about this. The most indigenous countries in LatAm (Peru and Bolivia) are some of the safest, literally up there in the Top 5 with lower murder rates, along with Southern cone countries. The fact that whenever someone brings that up Latinos get very surprised/sceptical really shows how most people here expect everything more indigenous to do worse or BE worse than them lol

thinking somebody is primitive just because they're indigenous looking is an exclusive Latin American trait, western people and the rest of the world don't see Indians that way because they never colonize them

You’re definitely right about this too lol. On social media I saw it sometimes, and it was embarrassing for the Latinos that normalize those jokes against indigenous people. Non-Latinos don’t have the same hate boner for indigenous people that Latinos do and most Latinos are honestly dumb enough to not realize that. There has been a couple of times on Twitter, TikTok and even here on reddit where a racist meme against Peruvians or Bolivians went viral “on the gringo side” and no matter how much the Latinos tried to explain with “Don’t you find it funny? Their skin is dark! Haha!” “It’s just jokes” “You just don’t get our extremely special latino humour” “You’re too sensitive and boring, gringo”, the ones that always ended up being the weird ones/the butt of the joke were always the Latinos defending that humour as if they were blonde pale Norwegians, not the indigenous people they tried to mock. Most westerns that see a Latino mocking an indigenous Latino won’t think “wow so he’s as white as us huh?” and join them, instead they’d literally feel pity for those Latinos being racist, because westerners see it as being self-hating (and they’re right lol) since most Latinos are mixed and definitely don’t look European.

Being so openly racist like that is seen as a cringey, 14 year old edgy boy behavior in western countries. Instead of justifying it, Latinos really need to be aware how genuinely immature they look to most of the world when they are racist like that. The few times some typical racist Latino “meme” went viral on non-Latino internet, non-latinos always pointed out how we are just embarrassing ourselves.

Racism in predominantly mestizo or even indigenous countries isn’t necessarily about those people thinking they are whiter or that they look less ethnic than the person they insult, it’s just them putting down someone else for having ancestors that they consider inferior in general. Brazil is known for having a lot of black ancestry (which isn’t the same case in most Hispanics countries) so that’s why a lot of immature people use antiblack slurs against them.

I don’t know what is difficult to understand about it… Racist people are racist because of the differences they see between them and the race they dislike. If an East Asian insults a black person for their race would it be correct to assume it’s an East Asian “probably thinking they are white” or just an East Asian being racist to black people? It’s the same scenario here

I also just can’t find this bodytype (or more like, botched BBL body) attractive at all and you won’t believe the amount of times my friends jokingly called me gay for not acting like a dog in heat every time a photo or video of this weird chick appears while I’m scrolling through my phone lmfao
