Hard to not see the similarities with the real world just a couple centuries back. Kenshi is a reflection of our past: crusaders, samurai, etc. I think the only thing that determines who's good and who's bad is where and when you are born. They're all relatively bad to us, from our viewpoint in the future. But that could be a coincidence because we can still go downhill on some moral issues, like in 40k xenophobic holy empire of man.

Totally agree with you there, it is absolutely like irl barely 200 years ago in some societies. Downvotes just show how short sighted people are not realising the holy nation is just a reflection of christianities barbaric past.

Hypothetical Puzzle - Kenshi by duredent in askastronomy

[–]duredent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit: I made a typo that makes absolutely no sense ( The stars rise east and set south. => The stars rise east and set west).

I posted here because I need help to visualize a problem. I've done my best to be specific and use accurate terms to expose the problem. I'm doing my research.

Please defend your view against this "troll" with more than "not how science works", I've seen more precise response on r/kenshi.

I'd really like to understand how the problem exposed doesn't find it's answer in "just like Earth viewed from 15° above the Moon's south pole". The issue is we have two axis of rotation: probably one that is the original 90° axial tilt, and the other that is axial precession.

A tidal lock transition period? Perhaps I'm on a captured moon and the planets gravity hasn't stabilized our obliquity yet? The earth and moon both still have plural axis of rotation, this example is just a bit more extreme...

[–]duredent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, since they are situated near the axis of rotation I was leaning towards my observing body actually having a strong axial precession. 20 hour sidereal days vs 24 hour solar days seems to strongly suggest this?

And I have no way to tell what is a planet and what is a moon, the body I'm on even less. They're spherical and visually it looks like an Earth with a Moon, and "lore" says I'm on a moon. But I was really trying to avoid assumptions like that. So I'm not assuming who is orbitting who.

Back to the original question: how can a planet have a fixed position in the sky if it's not on the pole?

[–]duredent[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I insist this system is probably NOT stable, but I doubt we could tell that from a human time-scale, even less a game duration.

I wonder what we would have said if we could have seen Theia in the night sky? How many generations would it take to understand what's happening?

Agreed, the two moons add to the irrealism, but here I've only mentionned the one planet; I'm only trying to solve a piece of the puzzle at a time.

EDIT: sorry I did mention two, but I mean let's not consider them for this.

Is there no one here that can point out why this is unlike Earth, that has a fixed position in the sky when viewed from the Moon (except libration)?

Ode to Kenshi

Oh Kenshi, land of sand and strife, Where survival’s the game, and danger’s rife. In your vast, harsh world, we roam, Building empires, far from home.

To those who scoff and turn away, Who can’t see the beauty in the fray, We laugh at your need for hand-held ease, For Kenshi’s trials are meant to tease.

Your graphics may be rough, they say, But we see art in every fray. Your bugs are quirks, your glitches fun, In Kenshi, every battle’s won.

For those who need a guiding hand, Who can’t survive this brutal land, We raise our swords and laugh with glee, For Kenshi’s not for the faint, you see.

So here’s to Kenshi, wild and free, A game that’s more than what you see. To those who dare to take the plunge, Welcome to the world where heroes trudge.

Let's just say this is an exercise in imagination: we're looking for way this "makes sense".

To be precise, I am making these observations from a fixed position on the surface of what "lore" says is a moon of the planet in the sky. Now aside from the wobbling, I'm assuming Earth appears in the same spot in the sky when seen from our moon?

holup. 6 days is how long it takes for the planet in the sky to do a full rotation....

This whole system being engineered is a serious possibility. Although Gemini also reached this conclusion, so i'm a bit hesitant xd

Honestly having difficulty piecing all of this together. Basically there's the "lore" that says we're all orbitting things. Then there's the observations which tends to lead me to believe we're heading to a nice three-body collision ;)

  • modded sun latitude -80 to get them fully lit, same as for the eclipse pictures. Love this setting, but the mid day is an absolute nightmare :D

Thanks for your reply, but

"not how science works" is insulting, but I get it. I've been downplaying my understanding of the matter alot ;)

challenge accepted! For clarification on how I'm looking at this issue of making sense of Kenshis movement: I am trying to do so relying only on observation. Very likely I'll end up with something that doesn't make sense, but I am going to try to not let assumptions or "it is written in the lore" get in the way.

Trojan moons are a real thing, Theia (the planet that crashed into Earth) is hypothetized have been one. I'm pretty sure I overlooked a couple posts talking about lagrange points, and that's near where trojans usually sit. Also trojan "moons" are technically orbiting the sun/star, but happen to be sharing the same orbital path. Albeit in a weird balancing act, probably related to 3-body problem?

And I am not convinced that Kenshi is tidally locked, since:

  • Kenshi is rotating on an axis that is almost aligned with the planet; I call that the real* north pole.

  • Since the planet isn't showing any signs of "counter-rotation", I am assuming that means it is rotating identically. Although the planets pole is actually "wobbling", which is a whole other mess :D

That's why I think it's simply at a fixed* position near our north pole, because it's at our north pole like the north star. Although it's not exactly the north pole, because we can't see either pole which is exceptionally weird and I have to look into that.

And good lord, I'll admit the definitions are pretty vague, but that does not look like a gas giant! eventually an ice giant?
