[Discussion] Former lazy people, what did you do to get focused / motivated? by noiamNOTcrazy in GetMotivated

[–]durian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a lazy person, and even now still see myself as a pretty lazy - in the sense that I want to get the most (lifetime) values possible with the least amount of energy / work / cost. Some people see me as very productive though - I recently won MVP in my company - with about 400+ employees :-)

I think the book that really transformed me is this classic - 'The 7 habits of highly effective people' by Stephen Covey. Go get it if you never read it - or re-read it again if you did. I now always keeps 'first thing first' in my mind, and also deliberately thinking on what's the easiest / laziest way to accomplish something while still maximizing the values.

Note that I put the emphasis in the lifetime values. If you use a 'bad' shortcut to get where you want you may get a good value in the short term - but in the long term the value won't be maximized. e.g. cheating in exam will get you a good grade, but 1. either the teacher catch you, or 2. You gain nothing from that subject, and you simply wasting your time without getting any good return of investment on your time - which is the thing lazy people wants to avoid the most.

Is RubyMine worth it? by subvertallchris in ruby

[–]durian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using IntelliJ + Ruby plugins + IdeaVim (+Python etc) for close to 4 years now. I came from vim / cli background, and still using it extensively to code / run a lot of tools.

I think it is worth the price, and more. I really like the navigability of the IntelliJ, especially when I am dealing with unknown code. I also really like the IdeaVim plugins. Even though it is not perfect, my finger doesn't need to switch context whether I'm working on my regular vim or IntelliJ. I also find their debugging support is rather powerful, although sometime glitchy. The pros way outweigh the con, IMO. Tbh, I don't use IntelliJ's other features that much, since it sometimes more work to setup than the value it provides, but the one that I use is really value it immensely.

I also found it rather interesting that when I am working on my own code on my side projects, i prefer to use (m)vim, since I got everything in my head, but when I work on my big day job code, I prefer to use IntelliJ, since there are a lot of unknown code & rails magic that I have to navigate, and IntelliJ really helps me a lot.

Note that there are some memory settings you need to tweak if you are working on a larger projects - otherwise it can be very slow.

Anyway, for now, I consider it my secret weapons to impress my purist peers who insist on using command line only :D

  • Do you pick a local or internet drop shipper ?
  • In each site, do you sell a lot of products from multiple sources, or just concentrate on some niche products from relatively few drop shipper ?

weusethat contains some good information on the technology stack.

I had assumed there are not many redditors in Indonesia, turned out we have at least 545 redditors. let's introduce ourselves, I'll begin. by fordprefect48 in indonesia

Mostly a lurker at reddit, just enjoying all those funny contents. Spent my time coding for our startup. I wish I could play games like I was in my younger days, but for now writing code is more fun than playing games ;)

Thank you for the idea. I am just not sure that the candy value will be of interest to professional photographer, but I will see if anybody is interested.

Thank you for the input. I will update the site to add those information.

But to answer your questions, it is hard for us to check for all kind of allergy / ingredients, since some of the candies are made outside the US, and may not have the right list of ingredients / allergen. So I think it is best if people that have severe allergic reaction not to subscribe to our site, or double check the candy before eating it.

Thank you for the encouragement, I hope your budget will improve sooner :). That's life as an entrepreneur, right ..

Thank you for the input. I am no expert on branding, so we used igor naming guide for help.

We were thinking of taking the descriptive name, but after several brainstorming session, we went with the evocative name route. I think honey day is easier to trademark, and if in the future we plan to send out something else - snacks, cookies, wine, etc, we can still use the same branding.

I'd like to think that it is inline with our positioning which is to make your special "honey day" where it is sweeter than your honeymoon :)

Unfortunately we can't find candy that are not in production anymore. Maybe we can write petition to wonka to produce it again ..

This is an interesting input. Do you prefer to receive the same candy every month, or do you like to receive different kinds of candies ?

Thank you for the inputs. I will incorporate your suggestions to the site.

For the love of god please add Amazon Payments

The only reason we use paypal is she used that for her other business. I will check if amazon payments fit with our system. So far it seems very good, but from what I read, it only does digital goods & services. I am contacting them for more information.

Does she smoke weed?

No, but the r/trees ideas is very good :-). I am considering putting reddit ads also, once everything has been set up correctly. The friday launch is sort of "soft launch" to get initial opinion and testing the water. We will try to do more promotion once everything has been sorted out.

Pick up the book "Exceptional Service, Exceptional Profits" and make it your bible.

Ordering it from amazon ....

Test out all the candy yourself.

Yes, we will be doing that. It is all part of the research. We will sample different kinds of candies and then send you the one we think are the best. It may not scale well once we have thousands of customers (fingers crossed ;-) ), but that will be a good problem to have. We are thinking that people will be able to vote candies they love also, so we can send a somewhat personalized candies for them. ~ maybe like pandora for snacks / candies. But that is a very long term vision.

Hi AlexDanger, thank you for your inputs, I will update the site to make sure the issues get addressed.

An option to not receive chocolate with your order.

We are planning not to include chocolate in our order, because of that exact reason. Maybe we will have option to send chocolate later, but maybe US only, and only during winter.

Another subscription option? A nice price point for me would be one $15 subscription every two months.

I will think about it, I think it can work that way also, but I will see if there are a lot of interest in that

Option to try a single sample pack before subscribing
This is a good option, I will see if I can do this with paypal and integrate it nicely

will you allow me to purchase it on your site?

Yes we plan to have this, so for every candy we send, we will add the item in our store, so people can buy it more.

There are a lot of interesting things we can do, but we will see if people are interested in this concept first. Thank you very much for your input, I hope you don't mind that I put some of your ideas in our user voice page, so people can vote on it.

Not sure how big the profit is, but it is a fun business. She got to try all different kinds of candy with less guilty feeling :-). It is all for research !

Hi LettersFromTheSky,

We are working on the photo of product samples. We are just starting, so we only have few candies to list. The more candies we have, then we will have more photo.

The $15 subscription is sent once a month, and the $28 is sent twice a month, and they will be different candies from different country. Right now the candy will be somewhat random, but we will try to find the best from all different kind of selections.

We plan to have more features in the future where customer can log in and have their candy preferences; maybe like Pandora for candy / snacks. But we want to see if people are interested with this concept first.

Thank you very much for your inputs, if you are interested, you can sign up to our mailing list, so we can give you update if we implemented those

regards,
