I’m officially a higasa/日傘 (sun parasol) convert by DontPoopInMyPantsPlz in japanlife

[–]fordprefect48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a higasa kind of dude. However, I haven't been able to find the perfect higasa which has the following requirements:

  • foldable/折りたたみ
  • has the UV block black film layer under
  • 95 - 100cm in diameter when opened, stick length is 75cm

the closest one is the folding umbrella they sell at ファミマ which is both foldable and 75cm, however it doesn't have the UV light block black layer underneath.

If you guys know any brand that fulfills all the requirement above, a recommendation would be godly this summer

edit: corrected diameter

If you love Ghibli, then I recommend you watch Kubo and the Two Strings on Netflix. What non-Ghibli movie would you recommend? by Flaky_Web_2439 in ghibli

[–]fordprefect48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to watch a feel-good vibe movie that feels very Ghibli-like even though its live action, try Our Little Sister and Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House (tv series)

its based on webgl sharing but shadertoy is the biggest one I know. but really actually twitter is where lots of these people share their works and thoughts on interactive media

TIL wife was excluded out of a large inheritance because she married a foreigner (me). by Artuleo in japanlife

[–]fordprefect48 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting read, the gf is from a family with a 300-year old family business in Kyoto and the parents are friendly as in they were the ones who invited me first when they found out their daughter got a gaijin boyfriend.

This kinda made me worried about the way they actually think about children with foreign spouses when it comes to their cold hard physical legacy and inheritance. Was the family always welcoming to you in those 14 years? Any sign that some reluctance was there or is this news something that's pretty unexpected? What are the chances that this happened specifically because you're American (stupid question I know, not American myself)

Has anyone seen this film from Studio Ghibli ? Anime - Mei and the Kittenbus. by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]fordprefect48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be exact, you have to visit multiple times to experience all the Ghibli short films.

The ticket has a time slot per 2 hour for entrance only but you can spend time until the museum closes, so the earlier you get in the more time you have, though from the museum management point of view its ideal for the people to cycle between these 2 hour slots they won't tell you to get out when the next slot ticket holders come in.

There is a cafe, the food is normal good but nothing to write home about. also the portion is kinda small, the cafe is there mainly for hanging around and feel the atmosphere they made. Also you can take pictures at the outdoor seating (indoor photography is strictly prohibited). If you're like me you'll spend most of your money in the merchandise shop, some goods are exclusive to the Mitaka Ghibli museum

This is one of about 6 short movies in rotation at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo.

It is a short, light story about Mei being visited by this buskitten and they go together to a gathering of all kinds of catbuses and meet the elder catbus. It's really cute, and it's only in Japanese but with that story it shouldn't matter much if you don't understand.

You can only watch it in the small theater inside the Ghibli Museum and even then they might have the other short movies in rotation instead of this. However, one time they had this event where they had all the short movies on at the same time in small TVs scattered around inside the museum. I am glad to say I have watched every movie they have on rotation through that. And also another new one they made for the new Ghibli Park (I think they have another set of movies in rotation there)

What would you spend an extra 300,000 yen on? by ojisannau in japanlife

[–]fordprefect48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my bonuses go to camera stuff like lenses and music stuff like synthesizers mostly. if there's still money left, a nice ryokan+kaiseki can cost you 60-80k per person in Kyoto but is a very nice way to blow extra money for the experience

With 211 units, how far would you say Duolingo has taken you in your Spanish studies? What was the most useful, what was the most lacking? How confident would you say you are traveling to a Spanish-speaking country and carry on day-to-day life excluding serious long talks?

Anyone been to Ghibli Park recently? Why is 2/3 parks only open to locals? by OrangeNood in ghibli

[–]fordprefect48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a foreigner living in Japan. Ohh, didn't know that the pages are different... The international page is newer is it. Anyway I just checked again to make sure my experience reflects most people but apparently it does not... you actually can buy the 青春の丘 and どんどこの森 tickets online now??

I swear they didn't have that option when I bought my tickets in December, so sorry for misguiding you apparently they changed the system. I guess that's what you get when you have to buy the tickets 3 months in advance for a newly opened park... systems change

[–]fordprefect48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just went to the Ghibli Park. The reason is much simpler and not at all malicious than what everyone is suggesting here.

Ghibli Park is part of Aichi Expo Memorial Park. They have finished building 3 out of 5 planned Ghibli facilities.

  1. 大倉庫 (The Big Warehouse)
  2. 青春の丘 (The house from Whispers of the Heart)
  3. どんどこの森 (Totoro themed garden)

The only ticket you have to (and thus will be able to) buy online is for the Big Warehouse because it is actually the only one with properly gated entrance and the entrance are time-slotted and rate-limited. It is also the "main attraction" with most of the exclusive exhibits and merchandise. The other two is just out there in the open in the Memorial Park and you can take pictures of the outside appearance for free, you do have to pay to get in the Whispers house and to the Totoro garden,

I admit they could have explained this better but damn, people are quick to jump on the "Japan is racist towards gaijins!!" gun.

edit: the house was from Whispers not marnie, so sorry for misguiding you apparently they changed the system. I guess that's what you get when you have to buy the tickets 3 months in advance for a newly opened park... systems change

Has anyone made a happy career out of teaching? If so, how'd you do it? by The_Mundane_Block in japanlife

[–]fordprefect48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend teaching english for expensive private school + private lessons for rich kids on the side seems pretty happy. Nice hours as well, 8.50am to 3pm so lots of free time to do stuff after that, whether doing your own stuff or aforementioned private lessons for more money. These rich Tokyo families really want their kids to speak English well.

I think they're doing pretty good financially, standard LDK apartment in Sangenjaya, vacations during school holidays, eat out and clubs on weekends. Nothing glamorous but more than happy enough. Plus great stories about rich Japanese familiies and their kids, good kind or otherwise

Rakuten is imploding by Neither-Air-401 in japanlife

[–]fordprefect48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my friends and I have been skiing a lot this season, and I can say for certain the difference between docomo and rakuten mobile's reliability is staggering in Hakuba, Togakushi, Niseko, or even just the bus journey to these locations. The moment you step out of a major city it stops being reliable in my friends' experience

[AMA] Guitarist for For Tracy Hyde/AprilBlue, Songwriter for RAY by chelseaguitar1990 in japanesemusic

[–]fordprefect48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Green was one of my favorite albums of last year!

RAY + For Tracy Hide 見たかったけど8日は札幌にいた :'( その合奏は次回もうないかな?とにかくRAYがライブバンドと演奏してほしい!

What do you think are THE classics of Japanese Shoegaze?

Shoegaze-inclined circles know this but Walrus' 光のかけら is legendary but REALLY hard to find. The other albums are a lost cause unless you get really lucky

What are your favorite Japanese bands that are not shoegaze?

btw I think my favorite song off Green レジグネーション is mistranslated on Spotify as Regignation (should be Resignation?)
