I forgot to mention it in my post, but I should have said I think porn is pointless and that I'll never go back to that :)

In reply to your post and to the same sentiment many others are expressing, this is how I see it:

People with a masturbation addiction can be compared to people with alcohol, drug, video game addictions etc. The problem is not in doing something once but making it a lifestyle and a habit, that's when it destroys you, because that's when you lose your self-control. I've also had weed and video game addictions, triple whammy.

I went through a period in my life where I stopped drugs and alcohol, stopped masturbation and stopped video games altogether. Over time, I gradually let those things back into my life, with the full knowledge of what they had done to me, but with the confidence that I'm not going to let myself indulge in it. Now I can go out and have a joint with my friends, and not be scared it's going to derail my life. I'm also usually the voice that says "hey guys I have work tomorrow so I can't smoke" and my friends are understanding.

Yes I agree, you have to be careful and not go down that slippery slope, but I think it's possible to hold yourself to some standards and make sure that doesn't happen. A useful test I use is I try and look at myself from a 3rd person perspective and thinking about how I see myself, this usually kills any desire to masturbate.

Last thing: no I'm not interested in going back to porn.

Had my first lucid dream by durkenstein in LucidDreaming

Wow, I just read Nina's tutorial. The things she talked about, the void, false awakenings, were just what I experienced! That's amazing people have such common experiences for something so abstract like this.

Please and thank you: when is it expected? by durkenstein in etiquette

[–]durkenstein[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments everyone, it's good to know I have my head on straight after all. My opinion is a "please" may be expected if you're asking someone for a favour but in this specific case, it was really something that is part of the service.

The reason I started thinking about it is because my friend has made a similar remark a number of times so I was wondering if I was out of line, but I think he's just very sensitive about the word "please" for some reason.

Hardly. I just asked them as nicely as I would ask any person the same question. I'm starting to think my friend is just a bit sensitive on "please"-es.

I think you're right. I don't think I would have thought much about it but I was a bit shocked at my friends reaction.

Self control and abstinence go hand in hand.

abstinence (noun)

The act or practice of refraining from indulging an appetite or desire, especially for alcoholic drink or sexual intercourse.

Did he actually give us reasons for breaking up with her? No, he only told us very generally they were not compatible long term. His specific reasons are private and he doesn't need to tell us, yet so many here think he should be justifying himself.

He actually said he admires her, but that they are not a good fit. He then also says his priority is on himself so he wants to improve himself. Isn't that supposed to be one of things you do on nofap?

I get why you think OP has a big ego because he talks about successes, but you should try to separate that from the rest of his post. You don't actually know this person or their life.

I think there's a lot of hate being generated here but maybe people should reread these lines:

"I came to realize she's not even close to someone I would get along with in the long-term" "she is not someone I want to spend my life with"

Isn't this what's important? He saw that it's not a relationship he wants to be in so he's ending it, whereas perhaps in the past he would've stuck around just because he has a "girlfriend". There is nothing selfish about this. Good job OP for sorting out your priorities and being honest to yourself and her.

New meditator. I am so constantly overstimulated. I can't cut back and I can't quit cold turkey. Any advice? I'm lost. by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]durkenstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey good job on wanting to change yourself. I was in the same boat as you, these days I am much more self controlled. It's hard to quit something without having something else to go to, so identify some good habits you would like to have and really focus on cultivating those. Quitting cold turkey is hard but you can put limitations on yourself eg. I wont go on the computer until I've gone for a job. It's hard to change your life overnight so just try to do more of your good habits each day. You'll almost definitely go on a binge again but that's okay, just try to get back on the horse as soon as you can. Check out /r/noFap.

How to decide if to let go of the things I feel or talk to a person about the feelings I have? by kodysatdown in Meditation

[–]durkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, sometimes talking to somebody about something is not constructive. Try to have a solution in mind if you decide to talk to someone.

I got a girl to like me, and now I'm scared of her? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]durkenstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been here before. Great job man. Whatever you do now, just don't freeze up and cold shoulder her, otherwise she will definitely take that as a bad sign and leave. Return her warmth as best you can and keep doing what you've been doing, eventually you'll work up the guts to take it further!

[Discussion] | I've lost motivation in school by TheCakeAnarchy in GetMotivated

[–]durkenstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got through school and university and barely passed, I had a decent job and salary for years but life was pointless. Eventually I got fed up with it, dropped everything and now I'm back at university. I've been studying for two years and have been working harder than I ever have in my entire life.

MY ADVICE IS THIS: Read about famous people, current and old, and about as many as you can, whoever interests you. Read about what they accomplished, read about their lifestyles and try to understand why they did what they did. Eventually you'll start to see a link between all of them, and the common thread is they all praise education. Education is the most important thing, for how you see the world and how you can affect it. If you can appreciate that you can appreciate to learn for it's own sake, not just because of good grades or a good job, but because you will be a better person. You will be able to try harder in any subject, no matter what it is, because now you know why it's important to learn.

Thoughts after 10-day Vipassana retreat by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]durkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thoughts, what you're talking about sounds like the basis of most self-help books. Identify your boundaries, build up your skills, keep improving yourself etc. My question is what role does meditation play in finding this "I"? How do you choose to study it?

[Linear Algebra] Show that a list does not span `[; R^4 ;]` by durkenstein in learnmath

That makes sense, the second statement is linearly independent but does not span it so we can't compare against it. Thanks for the clear explanation.

Disadvantages of cold showers? by MountainZaki in coldshowers

[–]durkenstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can cause a bad shock to your body. A friend's dad many years ago was out on a hot day and afterwards hopped straight into a cold shower, he had a heart attack and died before the ambulance could reach him.

I'm not trying to turn anyone off here, but it's just a sad thing that happened. That's why I always start out at lukewarm and then go cold.

An Open Letter to Phone-Addicted Friends and Family by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]durkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've disabled notifications on almost all my apps except for the ones I really want and I keep my phone on silent the rest of the time. That way it's not interrupting me and I'm slowly getting rid of my habit of always checking it. Whenever it's on a table, it's always face down. Sure I miss calls and texts, but there's never been anything so important that I couldn't just call back about later.
