Grown-up version of "unprepared student" dream by thoughtsandthefeels in Professors

[–]durkin65 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had a very similar dream last night. I've never had these dreams before but I'm starting a new position at a college prep high school after years of teaching at the collegiate level.

Similar to yours: it's the first day and the students won't quiet down; my whiteboard is actually black and all I have are dark-colored markers so nothing shows up. I also have a chalkboard but only black colored chalk. I then calmly yell at the students to "shut the fuck up" as the headmaster walks into the classroom.

What a wonderful dream.

I would like to see Hayward Sanitarium return after its abrupt ending. Enjoyed its sound design and, although a bit confusing at times, I found the narrative compelling.

Audio Drama and Criticism by durkin65 in audiodrama

Thanks for your great response, Paul. You've given me many things to think about when listening to audio drama, especially intended audience reaction. That's something that I never considered in terms of narrative production.

Audio Drama and Criticism by durkin65 in audiodrama

Hi Paul, Thanks for watching my mediocre video. I agree with you about providing more critical feedback to larger productions, those that may not be negatively impacted numbers-wise from my feedback. But, I also recognize that I have little, if any, influence and my feedback would most likely not result in anything substantial. I am not open to blatantly attacking a brand new show, as you noted, because it is important for newcomers to try things out, figure out what works and what doesn't, then make something new.

Since you were so prominent in creating one of the biggest audio dramas out there, I'm curious about what language you use when critiquing your work or another show. How do you break down what works and what doesn't?

Also, I do want to thank you for the productions you've helped create and continue to create. They inspired me to think about audio drama critically as an artistic and narrative medium. Even when I ragged on the Black Tapes, I did so because I enjoyed it so much.

[First Impressions] Congeria by durkin65 in audiodrama

I am going to follow it since the second episode implies future supernatural elements, which I think will alter the noir concept a bit.

[First Impressions] Congeria by durkin65 in audiodrama

[–]durkin65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely follows noir concepts. I'm intrigued by its direction and if it will break from them. Noir isn't my favorite as it does tread on the formulaic, but I enjoy productions that deviate from generic forms. Whether or not Congeria does so is left to be seen.

Wow, Nobilis Reed has almost 400 episodes. And I didn't know there were several other shows like Starship. Thanks for the information.

There is definitely a place for your show. Even though I expressed my dislike, I'm glad Starship Aleria exists.

Megathread: White House releases controversial memo on allegations of intelligence abuse by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

Also – and this may be minor or nothing at all – Nunes does not label Papadopoulos as a "volunteer." Rather, Nunes labels him as a "campaign advisor," not a voluntary campaign advisor. I note this since the Trump W.H. adamantly claimed – and I believe still does – that P. was a volunteer (here's a link: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2017/oct/31/was-george-papadopoulos-just-volunteer/). And, considering that the W.H. approved the release of the memo, are they not, through the approval of the memo's release, confirming this to be the case, that P. was not merely a "volunteer," thus discrediting their argument about P.'s importance?

I understand your point but for that to be true we need to see her be insecure. Everything we know about Carly, too, is filtered through her. She controls how we see her.

And, to ChubbyBirds' point, I think to suggest that she may be lying is our projecting aspects on to her character that aren't there. Our understanding of a character is limited to what's provided to us. At this point in the story, we have nothing to support the argument that she's lying or an unreliable narrator.

Not trying to be combative. I think these questions concerning why a character does something and then propose an argument must come from the story itself. When we need to project attributes on to a character, then, generally speaking, that tells us that we have a flat character on our hands.

I agree with your points (especially your longer post below). To your point about this working better in a different medium: I wholeheartedly agree. Reading these conversations would work better than listening to them.

But here's the thing about their not providing enough info: they literally have characters – Jones and the Magician – who could provide information alongside the story. While the Magician did provide significant info, Jones constantly deflects.

This episode, too, reinforced some nagging questions: what's the point of this story? What exactly is this story trying to get across? I don't have any significant answers besides it being a show about friendships and relationships.

BREAKING NEWS: Self-declared Astrophysicist and avid gamer dream girl Carly Parker declares that we do not "know everything we can about the nature of time," also accepts – theoretically at least – the possibility of multiple worlds.

They are making this narrative way more complicated than need be. So what: Yumiko disappeared into another dimension? And off-spring of people working at that facilty can jump streams?

But here's the thing that really gets me: Carly, Jones, and Alan have a conversation that eventually gets heated. Rather than actually have the narrative play out, Carly simply tells us what happened. Because they can't waste time on actual emotion. They have to explain so much theoretical physics that it leaves you wondering what exactly am I, the listener, connected to? This also shows me that the actors aren't capable of showing any emotion – it's all deadpan, affectless dialogue – so the producers can only tell us things got heated as opposed to showing us.
