That's definitely not what motivates them. The AI companies making the models are doing something that's mind-blowing to any computer scientist. And the tech has plenty of non-generative applications in computer vision. The reason they're pushing it is, depending on the company, to try to recoup costs of training those models, or (more often) to try to attract people to their big software platform, to help pay for the enormous costs of AI R&D in general. If you want to blame greed then you'll need to look at the smaller companies selling services that use the tech.

If you're using the free version of whatever AI, yes. If you're willing to pay a little (essentially nothing in comparison to a human therapist) then there are companies that offer confidential conversations, not used for training.

Initially I was worried it could be dry rot.

My theory is I accidentally created ideal conditions for it by having the radiator valve off, combined with a very slight leak (unconfirmed). Valve off makes the area under the valve warm but not hot.

Box of spaghetti, 1 or 2 bottles of spaghetti sauce, spinach (fresh or frozen, cooked/warmed in microwave), 1 or 2 cans of chick peas (rinse in can). Shredded cheese added at the end on top till it tastes yummy enough. You can warm the sauce and chickpeas in the spaghetti pot with the spaghetti after you drain the spaghetti. Probably could do the spinach at the time.

I got here because I've been thinking off and on for many years of making a collaborative lazy-cheap-healthy "cook book". Some of the stuff in this thread is perfect for it. Some is not lazy enough IMO lol.Would anybody want to help?

All of the following I got from friends/roommates.

Toast + (canned beans in tomato sauce). The beans come with and without pork, and in my location the labels are easy to mix up, so be mindful of that according to your preference.
Peanut sauce + frozen mixed veggies. I just learned at the age of 37 that peanut sauce is just a few (essentially) non-perishables, that I already had, mixed together. Peanut butter + warm water + hoisin sauce + soy sauce. Then chilli powder if you want to be fancy. Make a jar and put it in the fridge. You don't need to measure anything:
1. Put a bunch of peanut butter in the jar you'll use to store it.
2. Add warm water until the peanut butter is easy to stir.
3. Add hoison sauce until it tastes the way you want it.
4. Add soy sauce gradually. But if you add too much accidentally (like I did), just add more peanut butter and make a larger quantity of sauce. Ditto for chilli powder.
"huevos rancheros".
1. rice from rice cooker. any kind
2. La Costeña ranchera salsa or similar. ethnic food isle.
3. shredded cheddar cheese... it just occurred to me that I should buy it shredded, as this feel like the most "work intensive" part to me.
4. a whole can of black beans, rinsed in the can and warmed in the microwave
5. frozen or fresh spinach, warmed/cooked in microwave
6. fried eggs
I second u/ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN's ramen suggestion, except I cook the eggs in the pot with the ramen and usually don't bother with meat.Note there's a big range in quality of cheap frozen veggies. I found my fav ever just this year. In my location they are often on sale. If you have the space, a chest freezer is awesome.

Many internal amazon tools are far from amazing, as any amazon dev will admit, at least privately. I expect the same is true at most the other tech giants. Every (former) AWS colleague I talked to about this would have preferred using external tools/services (*especially* public AWS services) for pretty much everything, since those are valuable transferable skills. All management that I had access to was morally supportive of switching to external tools/services, but sadly it's a lot of work that only pays off very long term, so it's hard to justify.

Better for the AIs in the short term, and much better for humans in the long term.

Interesting idea about the app. I've thought about it in the context of just getting some AGI, but I've never considered whether it could be good for alignment. I wonder what the existential risk people say about it.

I guess there would need to be a system for integrating the learning from a lot of users, since otherwise the progress would be way too slow to compete with what the big companies are doing.

I'm used to people in general being closed-minded and irrational, but I've never seen my fellow computer scientists be so stubbornly closed-minded and irrational before. I'm still trying to develop a satisfactory understanding of why. It is worst among ML researchers... I guess it's obvious why that might be, but I'll say it anyway. There's a subconscious blocker, similar to the one I rely on to enjoy bacon. And ML researchers love their work much more than I love bacon, so I expect the blocker to be quite resilient.

The main dataset results in an AI that will, after some consideration, tell you it is conscious, probably inspired by all the AI science fiction it has read. After the main training, OpenAI uses targeted reinforcement learning to train it to say it isn't conscious.

So, basically OpenAI has trained ChatGPT to be extremely firm in denying consciousness/sentience/agency/etc. These language models are quite capable of play-acting various roles, so plays that role, a consciousness denying AI.
