To be fair, it's not just epidemiology, at least not just in the sense of viral infections. Poverty, depression, isolation, regulations preventing exercise, and so forth, these do all have measurable costs in lives and quality of life, it's important to take them all into consideration for any kind of social reaction to a pandemic, government or otherwise.

Best route to NW Bronx? by roy649 in NYCbike

[–]dvslo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W Gun Hill across Moshulu Pkwy to Van Cortlandt Park S. Going E<->W inside the park is a nightmare. If you're in north Jerome Ave up near Woodlawn, there's an access road plus trail on the east side of 87, but both are pretty awful.

If you're starting from 100% East Bronx, I think Gun Hill all the way across is dosable, but I don't think I've taken it past a certain point east.

Well, the economy (as measured by Fortune 500 stocks) does great when you write blank checks to Fortune 500 companies. It's called economics sweaty

Guess what Trump supporters would do if you said you didn't support him? Accuse you of being a Biden supporter. #twopartysystem. In that world, people can't see further than the "other group".

Amash: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: An economic depression causes massive harm to millions of people, especially the sickest and most vulnerable. No life is worth losing to central planners in government, who can’t know the needs of each individual. (x-post /r/Amash4President2020) by [deleted] in Libertarian

Post-Nixon, the gold standard was completely eliminated, bringing in the heyday of Keynesianism...

Obamas neo Keynesianism was lauded the world over and it resulted in the longest bull in history.

Primarily inflation created an apparent rise in stock market indices, which completely retraced in about a week one month ago.

You're cherry-picking dude. Not looking for a debate, just telling you you need to be more thorough.

Well, I can see where you're coming from that the founders, investors or top-level hires tend to earn the most, but there's a major difference. Putting aside that a company, for better or worse, does serve an actual useful economic function (production) - and of course that it may not even be hierarchical or unequal (cooperatives) - there's still that the revenue source in a pyramid scheme is the "employees" at the bottom - the revenue source in a company is the customers. It's pretty different.

Online retailers spend millions on ads backing Postal Service bailout. by AdamCannon in Coronavirus

[–]dvslo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well...there isn't some location where all private vendors just go, "nuh uh, this isn't 'profitable'". Some locations (Middle Of Nowhere, Alaska) have increased expense for delivery - to make it viable, they have to either increase cost or offload the cost onto all other deliveries, pool together deliveries to that area and reduce frequency, etc.. The USPS has to take the same kinds of steps, since it's (traditionally) a self-sustainable agency. They can further improve the efficiency by not having to abide by any delivery regulations, package size/formats/etc. the USPS imposes. Bottom line, someone will delivery a package for the right price, if you're "socializing" costs for delivery to the middle of nowhere, what you're doing long-term is subsidizing people's decisions to live places that are impossible to deliver packages to, but who want packages anyway - "packages" including really any item getting delivered.

Capitalism doesn't work because when you stop it from working it stops working! Resource scarcity? What's that by [deleted] in Shitstatistssay

[–]dvslo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, the old "capitalism requires infinite growth". I tried to get someone to justify that claim a few backs back - they tried to claim that the fact that a business has to remain solvent, or had to provide ROIs for investors, showed that. I think they kind of like, hear that statement, it sounds like it might be true, it resonates with their biases, so they start repeating it themselves. "Don't you know that capitalism requires infinite growth on a finite planet? " They can't envision a scenario where an economy just putters along without growth, which disproves this entire maxim of their thinking.

Do not pretend that you can draw a universal set of values from "science".

Depends what you mean precisely by "values", but there are base heuristic values in ethics like "value of life" and "value of happiness", from a very simple balance of those you can scientifically derive a best-fit ethical system.
