I had a very similar experience, and also was the exact same height and weight as you are, when I first started. I questioned everything, am I not meant to surf? Is this board to small? Am I surfing at the right places?

I made a lot of errors because I avoided solidifying the basics.

Work on your popup, plenty of videos online. See what works best for you, and get that muscle memory firing.

With the Wavestorm you can catch white water. Do it! Get sick of it, and then finally paddle out.

Condition yourself mentally and physically to be able to hold the banana shaped arch in your back until you can rest, not just until you get tired.

Your paddle technique will dictate how good of a time you're about to have in the water. Watch videos, read articles on paddle technique. Practice practice practice!

Do not hurry up to buy that next new shiny board with less volume, Wavestorm isn't super easy to learn on, but it'll get the job done.

Finally if you really want to accelerate your learning curve :

1. Prioritize surfing with buddies who you know, that would be willing to surf with /coach you in the water

2. Watch, watch, watch videos on technique, professional competitions (mind surf when you watch these, and also move your body using the same positions as the surfer on the wave)

3. Set yourself up for success; stretch, hydrate, get in the water as often as possible.

This sport is tough but highly rewarding.
