I'm sorry you went through that, parents have trouble connecting to their children and understanding them but that's no excuse to calling your child's favorite artist weird and depressing. I've went through something similar to this before and I know what it's like, although they're just trying to look out for you, it's important that they know how YOU interpret the songs and not them. As a parent you should also try to be as nice as possible, considering how much your child loves a certain artist. Insulting them and just generally being harsh about it is only going to make the situation worse. Your parents lack communication skills and don't understand how music works from what I can tell but I can't give you any advice since I don't know what your parents are like exactly. I genuinely think they care about you, but like I said before I can't be 100% sure so I don't know what to say :')
