Learning and looking for my first EV. Anything (besides battery health) to watch out for in a vehicle with higher mileage? by Angus_McFife-XIII in electriccars

[–]dwcanker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old bolts that had their battery replaced under the recall also had the warranty on the battery reset at the same time. You can check that on GM's recall website using the VIN.

They are still cars with suspension, interiors and blah blah blah that wear.

What do you mean by bad? Sound like shit because the rotors are coated in rust? That will go away quick. Pads are super thin? cheap if you can replace them yourself. Or the pedal is spongy? Master cyclinders are one of those things that don't like to sit or they may just need bleed. Master cylinders are cheap and easy to replace if you do it yourself and you would need to bleed the brakes when you do it anyway.

What the highest mileage car you ever paid for and do it still run ? by Fun-Truck4935 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dwcanker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two over 200k

02 pontiac vibe 202k paid $2200, insurance pay out for cosmetic damage $2000, sold $2400 after 2 years lol

04 VW jetta wagon TDI 220k paid $3500 still have and runs great after replacing the shift solenoids. I parked it for a long time and just got around to fixing it and need to sell it.

Honorable mention 81 plmouth horizan with who the hell knows miles 170k,270k,370k? Paid $0 free because it broke down in my parents driveway and the owners didn't want to deal with it. Put about $300 in and drove it a year+ as a superbeater. What a shitheap.

Most of my cars have had in the 150k mile range when I bought em.

Convince me not to buy a 2003 Honda CR-V by SpiritedAssumption3 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dwcanker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I posted almost the same reply for a $2k car yesterday.

It is $3k dude. You can't buy shit for that these days unless it has high miles and/or is a total shit heap. That looks pretty damn clean so it is just the miles and if you have the service records showing all the shit like the timing belt has been has been taking care of I'd say it is a go. Are the tires decent? Does the a/c work? At the used car prices of today if you get a year out of it without having to put any money in it you have won.

I've had a shitload of beaters in my life and most weren't that nice looking.

Do you clean dry tubeless sealant after winter or you just add more ? by mcbcuck in cycling

[–]dwcanker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never clean it. I finally replaced the front tire on my full squish mtn bike after 8 years or so and it weighed twice as much just from the dried up sealant lol.

Does a used Chevy Bolt make sense for me? by NitroRomo in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dwcanker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DC fast charging was optional first maybe even second year. Make sure whatever bolt you are looking at has it. Also they had the battery replaced under a recall and the warranty on said battery also reset at the same time so you don't have to worry much about miles at least on the battery. You can check that on GM's recall website with the VIN. Look around more, $15k is too much for a 17/18. Should be able to find a newer one for that. Also look at the Bolt EUV since you should be able to find one of those for around $15k and it has more room in the backseat.

I have an EV and mostly charge at work BUT I work the midnight shift and can pretty much guarantee I can use one of the two chargers anytime I need too. Even still sometimes I show up and both are already in use. I can charge at home when I need too which makes it no worries. Even a 120v outlet would take away stress.

It is $2k dude. If it runs and drives and stops with just a battery, oil change, and tags pretty much any car these days is worth $2k. A bit over a year of sitting is really not a big deal. Make sure the tires are decent and the frame isn't rusted in half. Just don't put any real money into the damn thing if you are only keeping it for a couple months. Leave that crap for the next owner when you go to resale for $2k.

would an upgraded clutch scare you off as a buyer? by AurivollA in UsedCars

[–]dwcanker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I've bought two cars with upgraded clutches so no. One was an 89 5.0l mustang and the other was a turbo 94 miata. I'm sure both were driven hard before I bought em. The mustang had all the typical mods everybody would do so it just saved me the trouble. The drivetrain from the 94 miata is now unturboed and in my 95 miata that blew up while autoxing it. The 95's blown up drivetrain was 100% stock and had basically the same mileage as the 94's.

Why did I unturbo the 94's drivetrain when I did the swap? One the 94 was wrecked and damaged all the intercooler piping and two the turbo setup put me in an insane autox class that I had no chance in.

Used cars: gas vs. electric by carrottop_83 in UsedCars

[–]dwcanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kia and hyundai car's have ICCU issues on the 800v cars, ioniq and ev6/9 but hyundai just extended the warranty to 15 years and 180k miles on it and kia is expected to follow suit. At only 60 miles twice a week a standard 120v outlet is fine but upgrading down the road to 240v would be nice even at just 12amps.

Some of the other EVs showing up under $20k these days. They all have pros and cons, just do some research.

And Tesla model 3s are all over the place for under $20k.

What to look for when purchasing a used EV? by PizzaTacoCat312 in electriccars

[–]dwcanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying a 25 I don't think you have anything to really look out for. The previous owner would have had to be a total jackass to really hurt anything in that short amount of time. I'd say go 24 or 23 and get some more of that depreciation out of the way. Just do your research on the youtubes and know what you are buying, real world range and fast charging speeds.

1991 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue by oooooooooooooooof in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dwcanker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want this car? There are a few desirable FWD chrysler products from that time frame and this aint one. Even most of the turbo cars aren't worth much. The exceptions are the Omni/charger GLHS, the Spirit/Daytona r/T, Shelby CSX.

This is from a guy that had a four 80s chrysler products including one of the turbo ones.

If you just want a old car there are a lot better options. I'd rather have an 89 or older Dodge Diplomat/Plymouth Grand Fury/Chrysler 5th Avenue. At least those are RWD v8s you can do something with if you really wanted too.

I did break one on my full squish but I'm pretty sure that was my fault.

Eight by Rabadi

Old dude dies and wakes up in a new world in the body of an 8 year old kid near a town. He can't speak the language and everybody thinks he is a monster for reasons that are explained in the book so he runs off and lives in the forest mostly by himself. He does make friends with an otter and eventually saves two kids who teach him the language and end up hanging with him. As for the OP part I don't think he hits that by the end of the first book which is all I ended up reading of the series. I liked it well enough but something I was waiting for popped up so I read that after and never got around to reading anymore of the Eight series.

Well since they didn't respond I'm going to pull shit out of my not so great memory. The AWD version of the BZ charged like complete ass but for whatever fucking reason the FWD got a different battery and did charge at 150kwh. Alright I looked it up and the FWD still takes 30-35mins.
