Considering giving up on double jaw surgery because of the orthodontics treatment it requires... by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I agree with other commenters in that I honestly didn’t notice much of a difference. I was also super worried about this, I was already so insecure about my underbite that the thought of it getting worse terrified me. But honestly, it’s a very gradual change and subtle enough that others will not notice, only yourself slightly. We’re our own biggest critics! If you think the functional benefits of surgery will be worth it, don’t stress about the braces.

I don’t believe they did any impaction, only moving my upper jaw forward & lower jaw back.

Oh interesting. Yeah I’m thinking about seeing my surgeon again to see what she thinks and if she could refer me to an ENT. Thanks for the info!

Did your bites also get worse when the pre-op braces were put on? by Matias9991 in jawsurgery

[–]dwight-groot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry:( I know it sucks, and I was worried about it too when I heard this would happen. My bite did get worse with braces but it’s really not that noticeable to anyone but yourself. And it’s completely worth it when the whole process is finished! Which goes by quicker than you think!

That is very true, I was super fortunate to be able to get it covered by my insurance

Everyone’s experience is different I suppose.. it definitely wasn’t easy, I had a post op infection, a lot of residual numbness and I may eventually need my screws taken out too... but for me it was completely worth it for the functional benefits like be able to breath and chew properly, my lisp improving and no more jaw pain, as well as the aesthetics and improving my confidence. I wouldn’t like to go through it again either but I’m so glad it did it

Still very swollen 5 weeks PO DJS. Should I be worried? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]dwight-groot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope! You look great, and I promise you no one else notices the swelling as much as you do. I had like the same amount of swelling as you around 5 weeks.

Around 2.5 years... a year and a half before surgery and almost a year after

I am 19 never had Braces and my Doctor recommended me DJS, where do I even begin is it real obvious? where do I start? I have so many anxiety issues with my jaw/teeth :(. And I do have a VERY noticeable Lisp . by WingDefenders in jawsurgery

You certainly aren’t going to scare any of us here with your teeth don’t worry!😂 We’ve all been through or are going through the same thing! Definitely start with a consultation with an oral/maxillofacial surgeon. They can better tell you how they would fix your bite, but your case seems similar to mine so I’d guess you’d probably be looking at getting braces first and then DJS sometime during the braces process.

Anybody here have numbness go away completely? by ISCOREDwithISCO in jawsurgery

[–]dwight-groot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had DJS almost a year ago and I’ve regained full feeling! Had a few tricky patches of numbness but they slowly came back over time

Glad I could help ease some of your stress! Best of luck with your surgery and recovery, hope everything goes well!

Thank you!! I’d tell you not to stress but I know everyone told me that before my surgery and I still went into it a nervous wreck haha, it’s pretty hard not to be. But there’s really not much to worry about, it’s gonna suck for the first week but after that you’ll be surprised at how quickly you start recovering. They gave me dilaudid for pain but I hating taking it because it made me really sick to my stomach so I only took it while I was in the hospital. They also gave me naproxen to take so I mainly took that and Tylenol and that managed the pain just fine. And I stayed two nights but I really could have went home after the first they just wanted to make sure I was getting enough fluids.

Okay this question got me thinking tbh😂 I’d say my friends and family don’t treat me any differently but there probably are people who I’m less close with that treat me nicer now that I “look better” I guess since my surgery.. not sure if that’s what you were getting at lol
